WINCHESTER & District runner Chris Powner showed his recent Stubbington 10K road race win was no fluke as he dismantled a high class field to land the Chichester Priory 10K on Sunday.

The Chichester race has long had a reputation as a top quality event, having been used as the national championships in previous years, but Powner made light work of the field to finish in 29min 54secs – two minutes quicker than the time he clocked at Stubbington.

His power packed finish saw him push Brighton’s Jon Pepper into second, with the pair finishing well clear of Phil Wicks from Belgrave Harriers (30.17).

In the women’s race Aldershot’s Steph Twell continued her comeback after breaking her leg in a major race in early 2012 to win with ease.

She clocked 33.49, enough to see off the challenge of Emma Taylor Gooby of Worthing (34.36) and clubmate Emily Pidgeon (35.08).

Meanwhile, over the water on the Isle of Wight, the Hampshire Road Race League embarked on round seven of the 12-race series with the Ryde 10-mile race.

Home turf proved to be decisive as Island runners claimed the honours in both the men’s and women’s races.

Harrison Curling from Isle of Wight AC won the men’s event, with clubmate Paul Cameron in second. Julian Manning from Denmead again showed his liking for the course as he once again placed third.

Tom Muddiman was the first Southampton AC finisher, coming home in seventh , with Lordshill man Andy Griggs in eighth.

The men’s team gold went to Overton Harriers, who are now staging a major challenge to the the perrenial champions, Winchester.
