Rickie Lambert says Saints' performance against Manchester City was their best of the season
8:40pm Saturday 9th February 2013 in Sport
Rickie Lambert celebrates with team mates after Saints third goal.
Rickie Lambert hailed Saints' performance in their 3-1 win over Manchester City as their best of the season.
Mauricio Pochettino's side dominated proceedings at St Mary's and could have triumphed by an even greater margin.
"I think it's our best performance (of the season)," said Lambert. "We were absolutely superb today and got exactly what we deserved.
"We looked for the early goal and looked to put them under pressure early and hope to capitalise on it. It worked perfectly. Then we went 2-0 up, which was even better."
The score could have been even more lopsided had referee Martin Atkinson not waved away Jay Rodriguez's penalty appeals on the stroke of half-time, following a clumsy Yaya Toure challenge.
Rodriguez said: "I ran in and I think there was a little nudge, but the referee hasn't given it so we got on with the game."
He added: "We press hard, take the game to them. As you can see, it creates chances and puts us on the front foot. We've taken to it well and put in a great performance."

I think the change in our fortune is down to the change in Management - but that's because I firmly believe we are playing our best team.
Rodrigues does all the running for Lambert - who did a fair bit tonight himself!
We have no luxury players - all get stuck in. Not a Guly or Ramirez knocker but we do seem to be far more aggressive without them.
Hats off to the back four - no Shaw or Fonte and still keep Citeh at bay for the best part of 90-mins.
It is going to be difficult to get Lallana back with everyone playing so well. Ramirez looks like a bench warmer for when we need a bit more creativity. Puncheon does frustrate me a bit - but he is in a rich vein of form.
So are there 3-worse teams than us in The Premier League?
Whilst we have Rickie leading the line, and Cork & Schneiderlin in midfield...our defense and goalkeeper have less to do.
Big month ahead against teams we should now feel confident of beating...Newcastle, Reading, Norwich and QPR.
Together as one as our mentor used to say...
Just watched the post match interview - Pochettino understands everything asked of him! You can tell by the smile on his face before the interpreter steps in!

I hope NIGEL see's that game and gets the same satisfaction that it has given all of us tonight. We have moved on now but not forgotten what he did. Potch looks like he could be the one Nicola was looking for to take us to the next level. Exicting times, exicting team , long live SFC in the hands of the new team and our CHAIRMAN.

In the 2nd half you could see Mo Po urging Saints to continue to press them & play 15 yards further up the pitch so as not to sit back & invite pressure like we used to do.

When we do it well we simply don't allow teams to play. For those that weren't there, that was exactly what the second half at Old Trafford was like, only without the luck we enjoyed today.

Will be main game on Match of the Day tonight, but with ESPN covering the live match it's not on Football First. Pity that - I'd have been camped in front of the telly all day tomorrow watching the recording. I didn't relax at St Marys tonight until half the extra time had gone. God knows where I thought they'd get two goals back in five minutes, but I guess it all felt too good to be true.

To be honest, they're fine with you running round the pub shouting "Get in you fcuking beauty" every time a goal goes in so long as they're fairly sure you're not doing it because you're a United fan. I wore a Saints scarf and spoke in a plummy southern accent to be on the safe side and lo and behold everyone shook my hand when I left. Decent fans, these City lot.
St Retford wrote: Does anyone else get the impression someone is going to come in with a massive, massive bid for Spiderman in the summer? Our number one transfer priority must be to keep him - he's genuinely world class.I have to say, Retford, I was thinking something a little similar during the match. It crossed my mind that the best 'signing' during the window was that all of our core players remained at SMS. Holding onto them in the summer could be even harder but this squad is slowly building into genuine top six material. btw, I'm glad you didn't take your Saints shirt for a stroll down Moss Side this evening. Please send my best wishes to all M. City fans up there.

I think we can all see how good some of our players are, spider and cork in the middle run the game and I think both could be full internationals, though cork will struggle because he plays for us.
I hope things are going on behind the scenes to get punch a new contract as he is becoming a vital part f our play.
j-rod is starting to show his worth and with a couple of more goals (hope against qpr) will get better and better.
we have 2 future English full backs.
then we have lalla, gaston, some god quality entre backs and leading the lot is SRL, what a player he has become.
we are on the up and teams are starting to fear us!
we are going to go from strength to strength and with some good additions to the squad in the summer we will be at the top half of the league fighting for at least a europa league place, and lets not forget this years fair play league!
so proud to be a saint.

My nephew (a Citeh) supporter was at the game and even he didn't think that - he thought we gave them no space to play. He even put the own goal down to Saints - he felt they were under so much pressure that City had started to panic.
On the subject of management, I didn't think Adkins needed to go (though I accepted it) but if this kind of performance carries on I can see the appointment of Pochettino as another inspired decision by NC.
I was pleased to hear a few rounds of "Pochettino's Red Army" in the second half.
Onwards and upwards!
Stuff the Toon then lets have a crushing goalfest against old saggy chops.
(Yesterday was all the sweeter for having a fiver on at 60-1 for a 3-1 win: sweating for most of the second half as I thought we were bound to end with 4 goals)

Just that small provincial club down on the south coast.
How dare they beat the reigning E.P.L. champions, whos' subs bench cost more than our total team.
Manchester City were not allowed to play end of story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!
(sorry had a few exclamation marks spare)
Saints to a man were superior in all departments even the subs were straight at it.
Again although I have said that the team were all fantastic, I want to say that Rickie Lambert was sensational.
His game goes from strength to strength.
I defy anyone to be able to tell me who leads the line anywhere near his capability, and what a captain.

J-Rod and Punch put in great shifts and our captain SRL was out of this world yet again. Subs did what they had to do too. Could have won by even more if the ref. had any bottle. As someone said earlier our biggest problem next year is going to be holding on to some of these players. Hopefully they will see that something special is being built here and will stay and see it through. If any feel the pull of a bigger club I'm sure NC will be getting enormous fees for them.

A goal keeping error finally goes in our favour .... happy days.
Hart and Barry are England internationals, Rickie is not ...... wahhhhh nice one Roy.
Toure leaning into Rodriguez ... I’ve seen penalties given for less, but to be fair to Martin Atkinson I thought he contributed to allowing a great flowing game.
If I’m picky and looking for areas for improvement which I know seems churlish, it would be our crossing into the box from the wings.
It’s hard to pick an individual out as we were immense. Our central midfield of Cork and Schneiderlin is now the envy of many prem teams. My vote for most improved player in recent games is Steven Davis who seems to be putting the shifts that I’d heard he was capable of at Rangers.
Bring on the Geordies.

Many youngsters do not wipe their bottoms often or thoroughly enough. The result at best is severely skid-marked underwear requiring strong biological soap powder to remove (which is bad for the environment). At worst it can allow 'clinkers' to build up ie hard dried accumulated poo drops which hang on bottom hairs.
Over the centuries, soldiers in the field, who've had no opportunity to wash for prolonged periods have suffered from this. As Cpl Sammy Taylor of the 5th London Rifles said in his famous Ypres memoir: "It wasn't Jerry 'oo bovered us. It wasn't the whiz bangs neiver. It was the clinkers wot we dreaded."
Well done Punch - not a clinker on him!

Opened my soggie paper to re-live yesterdays fantastic display.
It only took 13 lines read before this!
Quote,
"It was a stirring display from saints against a lacklustre and frankly wretched City side who gifted them all three goals."
Echo when are you going just for once give a a true report on the game.
You always seem to put some form of negative at what seems every oportunity.
The stirring display part is right, the rest is not.
Saints created the goals by consistent pressure that prevented City's talented players to perform as other clubs have found to their dismay.
Try to give some credid, encourage people like me to again go out to buy our local sports paper that should be supporting OUR team.

The main reason it is more successful is we are all playing much further up the pitch. Lambert is so good at winning the ball, holding it up or flicking it on - it's not a dead end ball. It used to be because there was never anyone on the end of it!
Mix it up - and far less predictable. Not that many teams have time to suss us out - it's easy to have a game plan, but you need fitness and energy to play against us. I don't think many teams have the energy to last 90-mins at that sort of pace.
Looking back you can see why Cortese lost patience with Adkins. Our Nige wanted to control the game and play out from the back. It was all very pretty and predictable, but got us out of The Championship. The players seem to have a new lease of life under a new Manager. Davis really seems to stepped up to the mark.
To think we still have Shaw, Fonte, Ramirez and a fully fit Lallana to try and fit in - the future really does look bright.
My only concern is Rickie - could we cope without his presence for a prolonged injury? Rodrigues seems to have started to show the potential which we saw when we invested in him - but he's not Rickie!

The echo pink has been made aware of the first trophy ever won by our club.
It came to light in a cupboard in the Oasis Academy Mayfield.
I recall as a child I also saw this trophy everyday in the school's trophy cabinet in the corridor.
Always amazed me that it didn't get nicked, cos it easily, could have.
I was led to believe that it was given to our school (then Weston Park Boys) by the Saints.
I think it was because there had been strong conections with Woolston school, which was later, just a year or so before my time, to split the school when Weston Park opened.
Alec Perkins was one of the teachers there and he was the main man for the Southampton Boys team for years.
A hard man but always fair.
I wonder if any of the posters on here remember our "stone picking" we had to do when we were in the sh1t?
To the unitiated this was to get a big bucket and spend about an hour after school filling it with stones from our third pitch, that we knicknamed WEMBLY.
There was more stones on it than Weston Shore.
Happy memories.

The whole team effort is to be praised. But it has to be said Yosida and Clyne have both been excellent signings and Hooiveld and Fox have both risen to the challenge after a dubious start. The improvement since Cork has returned is beyond coincidence and it is a shame he lacks the ability to finish. As for Lambert just how good was he last night? He has brought a new definition to holding up the ball and I thought some of his passing was sublime
All in all just great.

Yesterday has been coming for sometime. Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Man U, Wigan all games in which we showed what we were capable of, sometimes for prolonged periods, but didn't quite get it over the line. Yes a little luck yesterday with the Hart fumble and the own goal but thoroughly deserved.
In the past we lost players to others because they were a standout individual in a group of journeymen. As this progresses the team will see that it's a whole and will continue to improve so why go elsewhere?

I’d like to think Nigel would back me up with some quote from Sun Tzu’s Art of War.

Merrington said on Radio Solent last
night were "I have not seen Southampton close down teams like
that since the days of Gordon Srachan".
To those who still doubt Gaston and
Guly I believe that MP will bring these
players on.Gaston has taken time to
settle and injuries and a personal
problem have not helped.Guly will
benefit from the new tactics and
improved coaching.
While taking nothing away from Nigel
and his staff the new team is geared
to take us to the next level. We now
have an international goalie as the
specialist coach - witness the improvement in Boruc and just think
what it will do for Gazza.
I am over the moon with the way the
team are now playing but we are not
out of the woods yet. Yet I am now
much more confident that we will
survive.
Offers will no doubt come in for Morgan
and others but I do believe that players
will see that their future lies with Saints
and will follow Marcus and Nicola's
dream.NC is a hard headed business
man but has said that "Southampton
is his baby". To me this says a lot
about his commitment to the club. He
may not know a lot about the
technical side of the game but he
certainly has the right contacts - i.e.
bringing in Pardew; replacing him with
Nigel (we will never know the facts but
Nigel took us to the Prem) and now
appointing MP and an impressive
team of trainers.Just wish he could
improve the PR side of things!!.
When I woke up this morning I thought I
had been dreaming and then the wonderfull realisation sunk in!
We now have 2 weeks off for the
team to rest and for injuries to heal.
I think Lala is still feeling his knee and
am very happy that he is just being
used as a sub at the moment. The
same with Forren.Get him fully match
fit - think he will come off the bench
at Newcastle.

I hold my hands up as in the past I have been on here and criticised JRod. Well, under Maurice he looks like a player transfromed and he was superb last night. Jack Cork as well - ran himself into the ground. that said all players involved last night put in shifts and Punch, Spider and RL usual high standards. I reckon we can go on from this and finish 12.

Roberto Mancini saw his side give an appallingly inept defensive performance
Southampton were a side who apparently could not beat the big teams and could not defend a lead. Yet City managed to self-destruct in a fixture they were expected to stroll and the sight of Joe Hart amateurishly fumbling the ball to present one goal and Gareth Barry ludicrously turning it into his own net
The margin of victory could have been more. Southampton had a legitimate penalty claim just before half-time when Yaya Toure seemed to bundle over Jay Rodriguez and the industry of Steven Davis, the command of Morgan Schneiderlin and the constant threat of Rickie Lambert were integral to the result. So too was City’s indolent approach
Southampton: Boruc 7, Clyne 7, Yoshida 6, Hooiveld 6, Fox 6 (Richardson 71min), Cork 7, Schneiderlin 8, S Davis 9 (Ward-Prowse 80min), Puncheon 8 (Lallana 61min), Rodriguez 8, Lambert 8
Man City: Hart 4, Zabaleta 6, Lescott 6 (Kolarov 66min), Garcia 5, Clichy 4, Nasri 5 (Milner 55min, 6), Y Toure 5, Barry 4, Silva 6 (Maicon 73min), Aguero 5, Dzeko 7
so man city were awful and 3 of our back 4 only rated 6/10 and Dzeko 7/10?
they are suggesting that city came thinking they would `walk it` and `its only saints` and that was a big a factor as our play, so even our complements are back handed!

The real difference over the last few games has been the tactics that MP & his team have employed, keep it on ! !
Unfortunately Nigel Adkins was found to be tactically nieve in the games up to mid-November which is when i am sure Nicola took the decision to make the manageral change. Certainly I for one was on hear saying we need to either bring in someone to help NA or replace him as we could not risk taking any more time for NA to learn.
I accept that the players also had learn but we lost early points through tactical errors.
NA was beginning to learn and may have done OK but the decision was made before he started to improve things. Mauricio Pochittino had left his club and was clearly being lined up with his team in place to make the immediate switch.
Time will tell if NC has made a good decision but MP is getting better performances out of the same players and has more positive tactics that seems to suit them.
Thank you Nigel Adkins for taking us to this level and best wishes for the future.
Lets move on and hope that MP can take us to an even higher level. The bus is still rolling !!

To the many saying Man City were bad the truth is Saints did not let them play so don't take that away from the great performaces all round the team. Great tactics pressed them hard up the front and closed them down the whole 90minutes. Yes we were lucky with two of the goals but should have had a pen and out played them so deserved to win.

It just ain't as simple as some on here make out.
Nigel did a great job, I don't like the fact that his reward was the sack. That's now past.
MoPo hasn't been here long enough to fully judge but we can say that NC took a very brave decision and the early signs suggest we will really benefit from it in the long run.
The important time will be if we have a run of bad results and MoPo appears to have made costly tactical errors. What will people say then? I for one won't be entering into that all-too-familar knee-jerk reaction of calling for his head.

You go to watch the team you have pledged your alliegance to. To hope for the win, to play stronger and stronger opposition. To pit your team against the best and maybe become the best, even for a day!
Honours are fleeting highs that most clubs rarely see.
We have been on a great journey these last three years, emerging victorious from the challenges set before us. It will continue. Its what all football fans live for and it is definitely what you are jealous of. You would swap places with us in a heartbeat and you know it.
