Relentless Saints wear down City
11:10am Monday 11th February 2013 in Sport
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Jack Cork
There was a moment towards the end of this game that summed up just how utterly and comprehensively Saints had beaten Manchester City.
With the score 3-1 and little more than three minutes of normal time remaining, Jack Cork found himself deep in City territory, down by one of the corner flags.
Under pressure from Gael Clichy, he attempted to hit the ball out of play via the leg of the defender, only to see him jump out of the way.
The ball trickled into the area, straight to the feet of Javi Garcia.
The centre half had time and options aplenty. Pass it to Joe Hart, send it out to the wing where Aleksander Kolarov was free, or simply clear it down field.
Instead, he dallied, looked around desperately for help, and turned towards his own goal.
Saints striker Rickie Lambert began bearing down on him from behind and, in a state of either panic or frustration – or both – the £15.8m defender simply booted the ball out of play for a throw in, before chucking an arm up in the air in disgust.
It wasn’t exactly clear whether that was at himself, or his teammates. None of them put up much of a defence, though.
City, by this point, were both mentally and physically beaten.
Saints’ relentless pressing of them throughout the match had simply worn down the Premier League champions.
The style of play employed by Mauricio Pochettino – pressing both constantly and as high up the pitch as possible – completely unsettled their opponents from the very start.
City were never allowed to move the ball out of their half with any ease, and Saints’ opening goal came from Jason Puncheon winning the ball off Gareth Barry in City territory.
Barry will certainly have nightmares about this one.
After Joe Hart’s howler had gifted Saints a 2-0 lead, Barry committed an inexplicable error early in the second half to make it 3-1, nonchalantly stroking Lambert’s tame low cross into the bottom corner of his own net.
Perhaps the relentless press that the home side had utilised preyed on his mind and he simply panicked.
If so, what an endorsement for Saints’ approach.
They turned the champions of England – never easy beasts to unsettle – into a team that looked distinctly average for long spells.
Under the embryonic reign of Pochettino, they have done similar to both Everton and Manchester United.
As the Saints players consistently mention, it is the intense level of pressing that has been the biggest change from the Nigel Adkins’ era.
It is a tactic that Pochettino used to good effect at Espanyol.
His greatest influence, Athletic Bilbao’s revered coach Marcelo Bielsa, is famous for it.
Under Adkins it was not an alien concept. The former boss occasionally spoke of an “attacking-third press”.
Often, though, he would instead utilise his “mid-third” or “defensive-third” press.
Under Pochettino, it is an all-out approach.
Saints swarmed over City so effectively that, at times, their opponents must have wondered if the home side had their entire 18-man matchday squad on the pitch.
The new manager is fortunate in some ways, of course. One, that he took over a team who were playing at a high level and were also very well organised. Two, that he inherited a group of exceptionally fit and hard-working players.
Morgan Schneiderlin’s propensity to run for more than seven miles in a match is just one example of that.
So Pochettino has not had to go searching for the tools necessary to complete the job.
But that should not detract from just how encouraging the opening few performances have been under him.
Hopefully Saints can continue this intense approach under him, and avoid fading.
If so, the climb up the Premier League table only looks likely to continue.

I e mailed Mauricio on Friday to tell him not to just use Adkins' attacking third press, but also the mid third and defensive third press. Also not to confuse all this with the fact that Nicola banned the press from St Marys, including the Echo.
Anyhow, Mauricio himself has replied ...."Muchas gracias. Por favor se pierden ahora te idiota."
I'll have to get it translated of course, but top man for responding.

That's enough about them though we were absolutely fantastic. Each player played there part and we fully deserved the 3 points also starting to hear some positive remarks from pundits and quite looking forward to watching Neville's reaction on MNF tonight. What made it better was the mancs thought they were just gonna show up to win and absolutely hated it at the final whistle which always makes a seat at the back of the Northam more enjoyable.

Saints are now playing a style of football that is exciting to watch and more importantly bringing results on the pitch. The players seem to enjoy playing it and know that it will create many attacking chances when we will have numerical advantage in many cases.

It's also fair to say that Cortese has encouraged the signing of players with a positive attitude towards the team and a willingness to use the excellent facilities (more investment at Marchwood) to get 'super-fit). That's why we should continue beating teams that are thrown together with big wages and the pressure of big-talking agents, e.g Cetah.

Never going to knock NA cos he will always be mustard in my book.
Yet I love the way we play now, its refreshing and relentless. Jack and Morgan cost around 1 million each, they have been awesome.
You can understand why Mauricio is rated by Pep and the perfect one.
Some teams sit back and play, Mauricio's hunt you down.
Rodriguez and Davies seem to be coming into their own now.
Fox I thought played well Saturday.
No Shaw, Fonte, Ramirez, Llana still coming back to fitness and Forren looking for match fitness. Wow impressive display team.
I would suppose it would have to be one of the greats, because of how hard the season has been. Yet I remember the eighties when we would stick 4 past the likes of Arsenal, Utd Liverpool and co for fun and regularly.
I really would love those days to come back again.
In the early eighties the biggest away crowds were where we played. People could not get tickets for anything, everyone wanted to see us. Everyone clocked their highest gates against us.
If you are too young to remember I cannot explain that feeling, You expected to win every game and against the best.

However I do agree that nobody and no one will enjoy the prospect of facing Saints for the rest of the season.
A privilege to be there on Saturday, it at least equalled the best performances from the sixties seventies and eighties. Enjoyable and refreshing to watch.

A good article, but I would challenge it slightly. MP is not 'fortunate'. Let's give credit where it is due: Cortese appointed the right man for the team at the right time. Nigel did a great job to that point, but MP was available and, lo and behold, his approach to management fits a system (the so-called 'Southampton way') which relies less on the short-term approach of most managers and more on the development of a team- building strategy to move up further through the levels. Compare this with what SAF has done at MU and what Stuart Lancaster is doing with the England rugby team. It's no coincidence that Barcelona and The All Blacks have been doing this for years.

West Ham are not picking up a lot of points now, nor Norwich.
I think one team above us will drop into the fight.
We know how to fight and so do reading, that was one championship race last year. I think that will be a big assett for both clubs.
I think QPR, Wigan, maybe Villa or Fulham, outsiders West Ham.
Lol and hopefully not us.

A great article echo, more of the same please.
Remember drawing at Ipswich one fine spring evening we lost it that night..

Was a bit angry when Adkins got the chop, but from what I've seen already, MoPo is going to become pretty popular at St Mary's.
Agree that Yoshida is starting to really settle in, and J-Rod is looking faster and more confident-taking on players now which is great. He just needs to work on being clinical-just seems to need that extra fraction of a second to get a shot off, which results in him missing a chance that a true top striker would perhaps bury just that bit earlier.
Fox did his best in Shaw's absence, but I did feel that Citeh knew his weaknesses, and they seemed to have plenty of room to play on that side, although Morgan and Jack were snapping away, and giving him protection.
Boruc has really gone up in my estimations now, as he seems also more confident and focussed.
Looking good with the first 11, and still think that Chappers,Lee and Mayuka will all at some point play a key role somewhere between now and end of the season....

What I like about the team at the moment is how every player seems to have upped their game under MP. Lambert, Rodriguez and Hoovield appear to be working so much harder now and were immense on Saturday along with the midfield. Clyne did well Yoshida was outstanding and I thought Fox did really well. When the substitutes came on they all grafted. This is great to see as a supporter your team each giving a hundred per cent. You only have to look at training galleries on the saints website to see how the players are enjoying themselves. I've a good feeling we will win at Newcastle and get a win against QPR! But really I would just be happy to be safe two Or three games frOm the end and then see what we do in the summer in the transfer market. A bit of strenghtening and a better fixture list at the start and we could have an interesting year.
MOmentum this time of year and being out the cups could suit our game. Alot of teams still playing midweek in the prem
But the one position i worry about an injury sending us back into the mix is lambert. J rod is looking good because of his pace and that make him a very different player but he is slight and gets knocked off the ball.
The rest of the squad have shown they can cover and we have good options to shuffle in midfield and defence

I too remember the days when we'd thump Liverpool and Man U 4-1 at home, but they were also the days when we'd go and lose at home to lowly teams. Over the years, consistency has not been a hallmark of SFC. The one exception was the 83-84 season, when we finished runners-up to Liverpool, on the back of a lot of 1-0s. At the end of that campaign I remember Bob Paisley saying, to the utter surprise of most of the pundits, that Southampton was the team he had feared most that season. So let's enjoy the euphoria of a great win, but it would be wise not to get too carried away at this stage: there's a lot of hard work still to be done.
