Lambert keen on Saints stay

Daily Echo: Rickie Lambert Rickie Lambert

Rickie Lambert wants to stay at Southampton for the rest of his career.

The 30-year-old striker arrived at St Mary's from Bristol Rovers in 2009 and has helped the club rise from League One to the Premier League.

Lambert, who has scored 99 goals for the club, is the highest English scorer in the Premier League this season, leading to reported interest from others.

However, the Liverpudlian has quashed such talk, saying he would like to end his playing days at the south coast club.

"My family are happy here and I am very happy,"said Lambert.

"It has been a special three and a half years and I would love to finish my career at Southampton.

"The club's ambitions are very high. Southampton is going to be an exciting place over the next few years."

I wonder how many will feel the same if Rickie is shown the door in place of an upgrade?

ANYWAYS... In the spirit of the article, I'm proud of lambo goin on record this way. Sign him up so he can be our elder statesman for the premiership glory years ahead. Like giggs, scholes, lampard et al, only better because he fought through every division of professional football in this country.

He's one of a kind and a saint through and through.

Yep, nail totally hit. Ricky Lambert is an awesome player - I'm lovin' it that he's getting the plaudits he so richly deserves. And enjoying gloating about how great a player he is to my mates who support other teams. It's a joy to watch how he brings other players into the game, let alone the goals and the commitment! Absolutely made up to read his comments about wanting to stay and complete his career with us! Magic!!

Rickie is SFC's best ever player. Le God was right up there, but although he scored some of the most amazing goals I ever did see (and I think holds the record for most number of entrants of goal of the month in one month) he was a bit of a goal hanger and had to have his pockets sewn up to keep his hands out of them. He certainly never had anywhere near the work rate of st Rickie. He is immense and a great role model for kids, mine worships him! sign the man up and give him a Lambo!

Your wrong City Saint when you say we have turned our backs on Nigel. I'm sure that 95% of the posters would never forget what he did for this club while he was manager and he is up there with the great TED BATES. He has now been replace with a manager that i knew nothing about but a man that will have my full support to take this club forward. And he will do it with Sir Rickie if NICOLA has any sense. Totaly agree mate, a month ago everyone was absolutely amazed, stunned and annoyed that Saints got rid of a Legend of a Manager, but this is Football and we have to stick with the Club or desert it and have a two bob Football team like they have in the East of the region. come on Hartlepool

My first post.In reply to holbury halo I think SRL is the biggest saints legend for me having supported saints since 1960.The reason I say this is that he always gives 100%,never has a bad game, his presence on the field is so important to the whole team as has been proved time and again since he has been with saints.I would also like to point out without taking anything away from the rest of the team that without his incredible goal scoring achievements in the lower divisions i doubt we would have got back to the premier league so quickly.Sam Allardyce was quoted as saying last season that if he had had SRL in his team that they would have won the championship by March. For me Ricky is the legend

I share your fears that we might lose him, say in the summer. Given the pace we now play at, and his age, and his relative lack of pace. I wonder if we would keep him if someone stepped in and offered say £6 or £7m and we could get a good replacement from Spain or South America who was say 7 years younger and was adept in playing the 'Barcelona' style of football.

I don't want to lose him, but everyone has a price and/or a shelf life, especially where NC is concerned.

For us, Rickie is a legend and will be forever. But.... nobody is forever when it comes to playing football and managing teams, especially at SFC.

Completely agree George and I have said to the people I go to games with that I would not be suprised if that happened at the right price in the summer. Not that I would want it to of course.

Your last line is very true and should be echoed for Adkins too.

I think it’s called disposable commodities.
I too would love to see our Rickie spend the rest of his career with us, who knows.
I know times have changed and the game has speeded up, but there have been previous examples of front players with the guile and skill of Rickie who dropped back into midfield in the twilight of their careers.

Mark Hughes springs to mind with us (admittedly he got a little dirty).
I watched Robbie Fowler do it with Perth Glory, the pace left him but the class and vision remained.

Nigel Adkins rates alongside Big Mac for me, that will never change. LEGEND our Nigel.
Think our Rickie has a couple of seasons left in him yet. LEGEND.
Would not be surprised to see him stay, Close to being up with Mick Channon, Ron Davies and MLT and our Terry. Which is no mean feat in itself. No doubt will be sooon right alongside. Definitely favorite player since the Matt hung up his boots. Lol and has tons more dignity and integrity.
Clyne, Shaw, Llana, Cork, WP, Morgan Rickie Punch, (Yes I know some are home grown) lol total cost around 5 mil. AWESOME. What class what value COYR

Might sound a bit Irish but I actually think that Rickie's lack of pace has made him a better player.
