Saints on track for Europa League place
7:40am Thursday 14th February 2013 in Sport

Mauricio Pochettino
Saints are within touching distance of qualifying for Europe next season via the Fair Play League.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men are third in the latest Premier League Fair Play table, issued this week, the winner of which stands a great chance of making it into next season’s Europa League.
The competition is the second tier of European football behind the Champions League and offers the chance of high profile and lucrative fixtures.
The last time Saints played in Europe was in 2003 following their FA Cup final appearance the previous season.
European football’s governing body, UEFA, hands three nations an extra Europa League place each season for its domestic top-division fair play competition winner.
UEFA’s decision is based on its own league table of Fair Play among its member nations.
England currently sit fourth, behind Norway, Sweden and Finland, and only fractionally off of guaranteeing an extra European place which would be awarded to the winner of the Premier League’s own Fair Play League.
If England does bag the spot then Saints are in an incredible position to get the bonus European placing.
The only teams above them are table toppers Arsenal and Liverpool, and both sides would be exempt if they qualified for Europe through any other means anyway, meaning the slot would go to the next team down.
Saints have the best disciplinary record of any side in the top flight this season in terms of cards issued.
They have received just 26 bookings all season and have not picked up a red card yet.
If it were based on that alone, they would be head and shoulders above the rest with Reading the next best team having also received no red cards but five more yellows.
In contrast, the Fair Play League leaders, Arsenal, have accrued 24 bookings and three red cards.
And second placed Liverpool have an incredible 38 bookings and two sending offs to their name.
However, the league table, the latest version of which takes into account the first 24 fixtures played by each team this season, is also based on marks handed out by an assessor at each top flight game.
They also score criteria based on positive play, respect towards opponents, respect towards referees, behaviour of team officials and behaviour of the public.
Similarly, the UEFA Respect Fair Play assessments are made by the official UEFA delegates, based on very similar criteria.
Fulham were the last English team to bag a bonus European spot as they qualified via the Fair Play League for the 2011 Europa League competition.

Ambition is playing with the big boys - if you settle for mid table Stoke then that is sad.
Rememer the same guys saying that JPT was a waste but 50000 still went.
Bring it on I say - Our squad is good and strong enough and only three years on of bottom of L1.

All the boy scout guff about " criteria based on positive play, respect towards opponents, respect towards referees, behaviour of team officials and behaviour of the public". is so far away from the reality I am surprised it ever got this far.
In any event it should be based on numeric criteria i.e.lack of bookings and sendings off and not an airy fairy assessment that is open to bias from some euro official with a clipboard.
I am happy to wait until we qualify for europe based on a good season and high league position. In our case I want that to be entry to the Champions League.. and that is realistic if we continue as we are at the moment.

Spiderman is doing his best for us, but we need more players to step up to the mark now, get a few yellow cards and mouth the ref off. We could do our bit by amending "The referee's a w@anker" chant to "The referee's a ******* ***** ***** ** ***** ********* ***** ***** ** ******* ******". Having said that, perhaps we should amend ***** to ******* or even to *******. There's a fine line between what could earn us some valuable Fair Play League penalty points and what could land us in trouble.
It might also help if Punch directs his new goal celebration towards the ref.

The TV deal was known in January, that was why i was a little surprised we didn't strengthen in the transfer window. But fingers crossed the lads are looking good.
Ground increase if we stay up can be done in two stages one to 43000 the other to 54000 I think that is correct.
Depending on what the owners want to do, if anything.
But we have to stay up first.
Europe would be nice, but not one of the popular clubs and unfortunately think there is a bias towards certain clubs

The format of the europa is too long-winded. You have to play around 20 games to get to the final, that’s an extra half of a prem season to endure. It should be turned into a knockout tournament from the start and then clubs may give it more respect.

Otherwise the DE could make up any old bolleaux just for a story - if Messi and Ronaldo moved to the New Forest because they liked the ponies, and a rich oligarch bought Saints, and Gordon Ramsey started providing match-day burgers, things would be looking up - if, if, if
"When" Saints stay up (not if), then we'll spend next year consolidating, and then, the following season we can qualify for the Europa league on our own playing merit....... now that sounds better!

Let's concentrate on putting distance between ourselves and the bottom three before pie-in-the-sky talk of doing well in a Euro competition!

Am I a boxing fan? That’s a bit random 1885 ... Not any more.
Sonny Boy Williams vs Botha fiasco this week tells you why.
I was at the Tyson v Bruno screening at the Mayflower, saw Crawford Ashley take out our lad Jimmy Peters at the Guildhall.
Sadly I can’t claim to have been at same venue to see local lad Steve McCarthy get battered by Tony Wilson’s Mum’s handbag. Priceless, he was winning and they awarded it to the Brummie.
Best English comeback from jaws of defeat – Nigel Benn v Gerald McClellan – savage.

last 6 games form guide is Wigan 3 points,
then West Ham and Norwich on 4.
West ham started the season well but have struggled for points over the last 3 months.
Norwich had a very good spell before Christmas but have produced nothing either side of that.
Taking West Ham as realistically being the highest club that could be dragged into the dog fight.
Top mover in that section is Reading, 13 points from 6 games.
Then Saints with 9 points.
In the last 6 games we have played 4 of the top 6 and two near the bottom and only lost to the champions elect. Four of the games were away. We are in the middle of a tough run and standing up for ourselves.

Markus Liebherr, whose DMWSL 613 Limited acquired the share capital of the football club (and other group companies) from the administrators of Southampton Leisure Holdings Plc on 8 July 2009. Not only did the new owner save the club, but he also paid the debts in full, as opposed to many new owners who only pay a few pennies in the pound for debts owed, leaving many small business and public authorities out of pocket.
Liebherr cleared the debts to the bank, tax authorities and trade creditors as part of the acquisition, replacing them with a £20 million shareholder loan that is not repayable for at least five years.
so unlike poopey who only want to pay 2p in the £ we paid everything in full and didn't leave small businesses struggling.
I think their problem is that we found an honest decent owner who paid the debts and paid in full, unlike channers who never paid the previous cva and the trust who if they buy the club will reduce the previous cva from 20p in the £ to 2p of that 20p. with owners like theirs its no wonder they openly covert ours.

you now have a `club` that has huge debts that still have not been paid from your last admin, has little chance of exiting this admin and will most likely be kicked out of the football league and out of existence! you would have been better off shutting it down last summer and starting again, you have stolen cheated and robbed you way through the last 3 years and are an embarrassment to English football, so no we are not familiar to poopey in anyway!

The marking for "Behaviour of the public." does not come until next season (I believe).

The marking rules are here :-

The reason that Liverpool are above us is they have been marked EXTREMELY high on the "Positive Play". (imo their score looks "significantly different" from the other teams !!!!! must be marked by pool supporters ?).
As a club we are near the bottom of the "Behaviour of the team officials" section which has the following in the in marking rules "......and how they accept the decisions of the referee. Co-operation with the media will also be taken into account....." !?

the best fans in the world (what a joke)
I think this puts things into perspective.
our first season in div1 after admin
20-934.
portsmouth premier league 18,258
our second div 1 22,261
portsmouth championship 15,719
Our championship season 26,237
portsmouth 14,865
our prem season 30,427
portsmouth 12,092
We are the 12 team in attendances in the premier and our average gate is bigger than any of the highest gates of teams below us.
In div 1 just coming out of admin our gates were bigger than poop who were in premier league.
I think wholly right typical small club jealousy for their big neighbours.

A couple of league wins back before 90% on here were even born, when the team was made up of pros from all over who ended up playing for a team just because they were still posted locally with the Navy, and a cup 'bought' recently with a team of big names on even bigger wages that anyone with even the thinnest grasp of reality would clearly see as being 'abnormal' based on a tiny ground and fan base, and no clearly identifiable source of income that could cover that cost, that subsequently has finally seen justice be brought as they go through round after round of administration, and becoming not only the laughing stock of the football community, but also the yardstick by which all other corrupt and / or living beyond their means' teams will henceforth be judged......
Or, supporting a team that maintained huge attendances even in the lower leagues, with arguably the best youth set up in the land, which is back where it belongs in the top flight, where it spent 27 seasons last time round, and has,STATISTICALLY been the highest positioned side in Hampshire over all the years you could count, with also a sexy and shining future ahead of us...

The next Poopey court case hearing has been scheduled for when the moon crosses the path of Orion during the simultaneous alignment of Saturn, Mars and Venus coinciding with Pluto crossing the sun whilst partially obscured by Uranus. Does anyone know when this is exactly?
By then mixed football will be mandatory throughout the world under the global diversity discrimination law and their team will be filled largely by underpaid women afraid to get their hair wet or mud on their legs. As a club who look to the future to save them I can see they are already recruiting players that fit this profile.
I predict a riot.
they must be the only crowd in the country that chants.

We may have made it into the europa if NA had stayed because he told players not to play dirty and to show respect to officials Already MoPo has them crowding the ref and questioning decisions I can see us geting mre cards in the last 12 than we did in the first 20

saintkenny wrote:its an urban myth in poopey that we didn't pay for st marys and it was building the stadium that put us into admin. they seem to be very jealous about st marys, which is understandable when you look at the shed they `play` in. the simple truth is, and anyone can look this up, is before our admin we were paying for st marys and it was Barclays reducing the overdraft that sent us into admin, the main reason for our financial problems was that fans `stayed away` because of lowe being in charge, crowds soon returned after he went. I think their problem is that we found an honest decent owner who paid the debts and paid in full, unlike channers who never paid the previous cva and the trust who if they buy the club will reduce the previous cva from 20p in the £ to 2p of that 20p. with owners like theirs its no wonder they openly covert ours.Five Trophies Between Us wrote: would u b allowed to play at ur stadium though. cos that wasnt fair was it, the way u got it for next 2 nothing n robbed the stadium builders. that will disqualify u from enteringwrong we paid most of it .marcus lieber then paid the rest of the loan up and purchased it .and since he has been paid back with profit .so the stadium still had to be paid .and it was .adminiastration does not clear debts .look at youe own you went into admin 61 million in debt and you still owe 61 million .debts only get cleared if yopu become solvent .which you might be soon .therefore saints got nothing free as it shows on wiki and bbc or any other .recent history column on the saints

The format of the europa is too long-winded. You have to play around 20 games to get to the final, that’s an extra half of a prem season to endure. It should be turned into a knockout tournament from the start and then clubs may give it more respect.
Newcastle’s form took a dip at the start of the season and I fear the same would happen to us.
How about you?
