What price now for ex-Saint Bale?

Gareth Bale Gareth Bale

Former Saints star Gareth Bale believes he is in the best form of his career, but has declared that he has not yet reached his peak.

The Welshman came to Tottenham’s rescue on Thursday night, scoring two sensational free-kicks in a 2-1 Europa League victory over Lyon.

That followed his brace in the 2-1 Premier League win over Newcastle last weekend.

Bale said: “It’s probably the best I’ve been playing so far in my career, but I’ve still got room for improvement.”

The 23-year-old is contracted to Spurs until 2016, but his form has led to inevitable speculation that the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid are planning summer swoops for him.

Bale left Saints to join Tottenham in May 2007, in a deal that was structured to be worth up to £10m, although there was no sell-on clause inserted.

An early settlement was later struck, with Saints eventually receiving about £7m in total. As part of that agreement, they also signed keeper Tommy Forecast from Spurs on a five-year contract. He has never played a first-team game for the club.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who has signed Saints academy graduates Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain during his time in north London, confirmed this week that he had been keen to sign Bale when he was at St Mary’s. He believes it is still too early to compare him with the best in the world, but admitted he has come a long way since the raw teenager he first saw.

“Bale has the potential to develop and become the players that you compare him to,” said Wenger. “However, Messi has won two or three Champions League, a few championships, scored 95 goals in a year, so let’s not go too quick.”

Wenger stands by the decisions he made over Walcott and Bale.

“It was Walcott and Bale, and we were at some stage on (about) taking the two if possible, but we could get Walcott and I am very happy we got him,” he said.

Well we sold him for around 7 times the value of Skuntsmouth. He's now prob worth around 50 times. In fact I would imagine our current Academy would be worth many times the value of the Blue Very Few.

I remember going to one of his early games and I thought he was quite good.
We got a free kick and he was lining it up.
I said to my mate that was ridiculous, he was just a kid and someone more experienced should be taking it.
He scored.
At the time I watched it on telly again and thought the goalie should have got it. Watched the two free kicks on Thursday and I thought again. The goalie should have got them, but he didn't.
The mark of a special talent.
Now we have Luke, JWP, Adam and Morgan and there are more coming through.
Nowadays we don't have to sell.
Doesn't mean that some might think a move to a bigger club is the right move, we just get the right price in negotiations.

It has always surprised me that he has stayed so long at the "north london yobos" as he is/was an ARSENAL supporter.
.
Perhaps I expected to see more performances like AGENT Howard and Connelly have giving this season. But then it is probably the club that those 2 have been playing for that makes the difference.
.
p.s. I have got a few hundred pounds, can I take out a loan and buy Microsoft or Apple and then use THEIR MONEY to repay the original loan. Do you think this idea will get the approval of the Prime Minister and a certain MP.

This is past news. We are better than Tottenham. They have a bunch of overpriced under-performing sub-standard Premier League players and one tricky winger who is good but a diver.

Lets not be disrespectful to any of our past Youth players. We had to sell players like him back then. Thankfully we are no longer a selling club for as long as we stay in the top division.

I would love for great players like Bale to come back and play for Saints one day but he has developed into one of the best in the world and we should be proud that he came through our youth setup.

Not all our Youth players will make the grade and play regularly but it's great to see our Academy Teams both holding their own in the Elite Stages.
