The 2013 Track Cycling World Championships get underway today, with Hampshire's Dani King aiming to complete an incredible hat-trick.

The Hamble rider, who was a gold medallist at the London Olympics, has been part of the women's team pursuit squad that has won the last two world titles.

She will compete alongside Laura Trott and Elinor Barker this week, in Belarus, as Great Britain look to continue their dominance.

This will be the last time that the event will be held over 3km with three women riding in each team.

Next year, it will be extended to a distance of 4km, with an extra person added to each team.

King, 22, is keen to sign off in style before the rule change takes effect.

“We're going to go out there and ride the fastest we can,” she said. “We need to go out with a bang to say goodbye to the three-kilometre and three-woman event.

“I am confident. Obviously we've got Elinor on the team now, who is very young but has a really good future ahead of her - so it's a different challenge.

“It went well (at the 2012 world cup) in Glasgow as a three and we've had more time together now. I'd love to think we could win.”

The women's team pursuit takes place tomorrow, while King has also been selected for the scratch and points races, which take place on Friday and Saturday respectively.

Fellow Southampton rider Jon Dibben, 19, will compete in the multi-discipline omnium event, which begins on Friday, and is in contention for a place in today's men's team pursuit line-up.

“I guess I am the one trying to come up and get into the team,” he said.

“There have been eight of us going for the four places in the team pursuit so it's been a big fight. No one can get comfortable, everyone is pushing on, and there are only four spaces.

“It's a bit odd because you are one team, but everyone is trying to get into that team so as long as you focus on being the best, getting everything right for yourself and do a team job, overall it makes the team go faster.

“I'm very excited, it's my first senior world champs. It was a big fight to get into the team, so when I made selection there was a big bit of excitement - I'm keen to get going really.”
