Ben Reeves will need a loan extension to feature in a dream date at Wembley that he helped secure.
The 21-year-old Saint is nearing the end of a one-month loan spell with League Two side Southend but popped up with the decisive 90th-minute strike that booked the Shrimpers a place in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final against Crewe on April 7.
As it currently stands Reeves will have long since left Southend by then but former Saints boss Paul Sturrock, below, is expected to get in touch with his old club shortly to ask whether the midfielder can stay until the final.
Reeves amazingly thought he had actually missed the chance which took Southend to Wembley.
He said: “I actually thought I had mis-kicked the ball and it had missed the goal.
“I think it hit both my feet but it doesn’t matter really because it found the back of the net and it proved to be the winner.
“We had to battle really hard out there because Leyton Orient were a very good side but we got a few chances and luckily we took two of them.
“I haven’t been known for being a goalscorer throughout my career so I’m delighted to have been able to get two in my last few games.
“This one against Orient was certainly in different circumstances though, so I was absolutely delighted to get the winning goal.”
He added: “The lads have been winding me up because they said it was a rubbish celebration and to be fair, it was.
“I just froze I think, I didn’t actually know how to celebrate I was just delighted to have seen it hit the back of the net.
“The celebrations at the end of the game more than made up for it though, I wasn’t expecting the fans to run on but it was such a good atmosphere.
“The fans have been fantastic since I’ve been here; they have really helped their team get to Wembley.”

Reeves should be kept on at st marys in the long term.if he is half as good as DEREK REEVES was for the SAINTS in the late 50's early 60's then he should have an illustrious career.
