Matty Tew is set to finally see his boxing dream come true on Friday night.

The 30-year-old Southampton lightweight will get the chance to fight for a title in front of his passionate home support for the first time as he defends his International Masters belt against Santiago Bustos at the Guildhall.

Tew has taken the long road to a title, building his way up slowly to amass a record of 13 wins from 13 fights.

He bagged the title last time out in a gruelling ten-round victory over Ruben Movsesian and now gets the chance to defend it in front of family and friends.

“It’s the first time since he has turned pro he’s boxed at a venue like the Guildhall so hopefully he will have plenty of support and they will get behind him and give him a good night,” said coach Wayne Batten.

“Matty deserves that for everything he has done to build himself up as a boxer and then by winning this title.

“We won’t look beyond this fight but ultimately we would like to push Matty on for a Southern Area soon as well so it is exciting times for him and I hope that Southampton gets behind him because he is one of their own.”

Not too much known on these shores about his opponent Bustos.

The Spaniard lives on the Balearic island of Majorca and has had six fights as a pro with three wins, two losses and one draw.

It is very much a case of Tew and his team having to work on what they can control and being prepared to adapt as they go along.

“He’s coming over from Spain and he hasn’t had a lot of experience but he’s got a winning record,” reported Batten.

“His knockout percentage is good for his record and we have seen a little bit of footage of him. We also know he has fought overseas before so coming here won’t be a problem .

“However, if Matty sticks to what we are setting out to do then he will come out winning.

“I’m confident in Matty. I believe in him. I don’t think it will be an easy fight for him, but obviously we have to win tough fights to move on to the next level.

“He’s had experience of doing ten rounds so that should stand him in good stead for this fight if it goes long.”

As well as title fights for Tew and King Davidson, the first card since the inception of Batten’s Boxing Gym will see local lads Joe Pigford and Steve Lynch also in action.

Other fights on the undercard include Bournemouth pair Tommy Watson and Jake Gosling both in action as well as a debut for Wade Armour, a Southampton native who currently resides in Stoke.
