Stuart Tognarelli took his goal tally to a staggering 35 for the season as Winchester maintained top spot in South Hockey League Hampshire/Surrey Regional Division 2 with a 3-2 win over Old Kingstonian.
He scored two of the goals and Eric Woodward the other as Winchester effectively wrapped up the win points in a 3-0 opening 35-minute spell, which the Surrey visitors trimmed back in an anti-climatic second half.
Tognarelli opened Winchester’s account from a penalty corner and doubled the lead midway through the first period after some good approach play by Mark Maunsell.
Scott Matthews almost christened his debut with a third, but was the provider as Eric Woodward scored a third soon after to give Winchester a 3-0 half-time cushion.
But, while Tognarell and Woodward are grabbing the limelight up front, teenager Ed Ellis continues to grow in stature in defence.
The Peter Symonds’ College student oozed class, showing composure and control.
OKs nicked two goals back through Andy Knell and Chris Letts and, after their own goalkeeper had made two fine saves, created an anxious finale for Winchester, who had to survive two penalty corners before the points were safe.
