Saints - On this Day, March 2 1957: Saints 0 Gillingham 1 Saints crashed to a disappointing defeat against Division Three (South) relegation candidates Gillingham after conceding an 83rd minute goal at The Dell.
Saints finished the 1956-57 campaign fourth, just five points behind champions Ipswich Town.
1963: Saints 4 Portsmouth 2 David Burnside netted twice as Saints demolished arch rivals Portsmouth in a dramatic Division Two derby.
Pompey took the lead but Burnside’s double and one each from Terry Paine and defender Stuart Williams completed the turnaround.
Williams’ goal was his only one of the 1962-63 season.
1968: Sunderland 0 Saints 3 Saints netted three second half goals as they romped to an impressive win at Roker Park.
Ron Davies scored twice – two of his 28 First Division goals that season – and one from Terry Paine ensured Saints gained three vital points as they battled against relegation, eventually finishing 16th.
1974: Arsenal 1 Saints 0 Debutant Nick Holmes made a losing start to his Saints league career as Arsenal tasted success at Highbury. 1976: Luton 1 Saints 0 This defeat came in the middle of a poor run for Saints who endured a winless six-game Second Division streak during the season that ended with FA Cup glory.
1985: Saints 4 West Brom 3 Saints raced into a 4-1 lead within 52 minutes as striker Ian Baird signed off his Saints career with two goals.
Dave Armstrong and Danny Wallace also scored in an entertaining encounter.
1991: Saints 2 Leeds 0 Alan Shearer missed a penalty for Saints, but Ian Branfoot’s men still won with goals from Paul Rideout and Glenn Cockerill. Rideout opened the scoring on 10 minutes with an impressive header before Cockerill added the second with five minutes remaining.
1996: Tottenham 1 Saints 0 Saints lost to a second half Jason Dozzell goal at White Hart Lane.
They went on to narrowly avoid relegation from the Premier League after earning a point against Wimbledon on the final day, which sent Alan Ball’s Manchester City down on goal difference.
1999: Tottenham 3 Saints 0 Dave Jones’ side created very little as Spurs dominated from start to finish. On target for the hosts were Chris Armstrong, Steffen Iversen and Jose Dominguez, the latter scoring just a minute after coming on as a sub.
2002: Ipswich 1 Saints 3 Saints travelled to Portman Road missing both James Beattie and Marian Pahars due to injury, the strikers having netted 19 times in the Premier League between them before this game.
But Rory Delap’s first league goal for the Saints, alongside a Brett Ormerod goal and a wonder effort from Chris Marsden, ensured a fine win for Gordon Strachan’s men.
2010: Saints 5 Huddersfield 0 Five different Saints players got on the scoresheet as they brought League One high fliers Huddersfield’s impressive League form crashing down to earth.
Goals from Rickie Lambert, Lee Barnard, Jason Puncheon, Dean Hammond and Papa Waigo sealed an emphatic victory at St Mary’s, which had come just three days after Saints had caned Walsall 5-1 at St Mary’s.
