Saints On This Day - March 3
1951: Saints 1 Cardiff 1 Jack Edwards scored one penalty and missed another as Saints held Division 2 high-fliers Cardiff at The Dell. Edwards netted his spot-kick in the 29th minute before smashing his second effort against the bar in the 52nd. Cardiff levelled just four minutes after the penalty miss.
1956: Watford 1 Saints 0 Goalkeeper Fred Kiernan impressed for Saints as they fell to defeat at Vicarage Road in Division Three (South).
1962: Saints 6 Scunthorpe 4 Saints put on a real show as they beat Scunthorpe at The Dell in an entertaining ten-goal encounter. Despite falling behind early on, Saints raced into a 5-2 lead thanks to goals from Terry Paine, Derek Reeves, George O’Brien, Brian Clifton and Tommy Mulgrew. Paine added a second to fend off a late charge from the Iron.
1964: Swansea 6 Saints 0 Ted Bates praised the Swansea side that thumped his Saints side with a crushing second half performance. The Swans, struggling in Division 2, had only led 1-0 at the break.
1973: Saints 0 Leicester 0 Peter Shilton kept a clean sheet for Leicester on the ground where he was to later play so many games for Saints.
1979: Saints 2 Arsenal 0 Oshor Williams made his League debut for Saints as they enjoyed a comfortable victory at The Dell. Saints took the lead when Austin Hayes fired home before Malcolm Waldron added a second with a sublime header from an Alan Ball free-kick.
1984: Saints 2 Norwich 1 Goals from Dave Armstrong and sub Dave Puckett gave Saints victory over Norwich at The Dell. Armstrong finished the 1983-84 season as top scorer for Saints with 15 League goals.
1990: Saints 2 Chelsea 3 Saints surrendered a two goal advantage as Chelsea scored twice in the final few minutes to snatch victory at The Dell.
Rodney Wallace had scored twice to put Saints in control.
Sammy Lee made his debut for Saints as a substitute.
1992: Saints 1 West Ham Saints recorded a 1-0 victory over relegation rivals West Ham thanks to an Iain Dowie header, which kickstarted a run of six straight First Division wins. Saints were rock bottom before the game but managed to pull themselves well clear of the relegation zone with their end of season form.
2001: Manchester City 0 Saints 1 Paul Jones kept his sixth consecutive clean sheet as Saints added to Manchester City’s woes at Maine Road. Dan Petrescu’s volley was enough to secure the victory.
2009: Ipswich 0 Saints 3 Saints cruised to their third win on the bounce under Mark Wotte as two goals from Jason Euell and one from Matthew Paterson, after only being on the field for 60 seconds after coming on as a sub in the 87th minute, defeated Ipswich.
2012: Leeds 0 Saints 1 Goalkeeper Kelvin Davis was the hero as he made a succession of fantastic saves as Saints collected an impressive victory at Elland Road.
Rickie Lambert had volleyed the visitors into the lead in the 16th minute and then it was over to Davis to produce a sensational display to keep the hosts at bay.
