BARRY TOWN will attempt to make history in North Wales today when they try to reach the semi-finals of the 136-year-old Welsh Cup for the first time in a decade; and the first time ever as a fully-amateur side.

Their opponents, Flint Town United sit in seventh place in the competitive Cymru Aliance League, Wales' second tier for North and Mid-Wales clubs.

Flint will hold home advantage for the fifth consecutive round after beating Guilsfield Athletic (3-2), Greenfield (3-0), Llanidloes Town (1-0), and Caerau-Ely (3-1) at their Cae-y-Castell ground to reach this stage.

Barry have already won difficult ties on their travels this season, and will hope to make it a hat-trick this weekend after winning at Caerleon (5-2) and Penrhyncoch (2-1) in rounds One and two respectively.

Record crowds saw the Dragons' third and fourth round wins at Jenner Park against Ely Rangers (3-1) and Pontardawe Town (2-1) and many are expected to make the journey to Flintshire to support the team this week-end. The Barry Town Supporters' Committee is sending two coaches to the match, with direct trains from Cardiff Central to Flint at 7.21am and 9.21am.

After last Saturday's game against MacWhirter Welsh League champions Cambrian the & Clydach fell foul of a frozen pitch, Barry Town benefited from the rest of a free weekend, while Flint were in action against Holyhead Hotspur, running out 3-1 winners.

At press time, the Silkmen were set to entertain Llandudno in a midweek encounter, their second in a week against title contenders and last season's Welsh Cup finalists, Cefn Druids, the previous Tuesday.

The result marked Flint's third home defeat of the campaign, yet their overall record across multiple competitions has been strong, with three wins and a draw completing their February.

Among the threats tor the home side will be forward Aaron Edwards, who has already bagged some 14 goals and three assists in 26 outings this season. With hat-tricks against Rhydymwyn and Pencae, Edwards also notched four against Conwy Borough in September, on his way to scooping the man of the match accolades, and will be one to watch.

On the other side, Barry manager Gavin Chesterfield is keeping his team selection close to his chest, though is unquestionably poised to field his strongest available XI.
