Pochettino: We were a bit static
9:34am Monday 4th March 2013 in Sport
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Mauricio Pochettino
It was many unhappy returns for Mauricio Pochettino as he suffered the birthday blues at the weekend.
The Saints boss turned 41 on Saturday but rather than celebrating was left frustrated as his side lost to bottom of the table QPR 2-1 at St Mary’s.
Harry Redknapp, who turned 66 on the same day, was the one with a reason to smile as his first return to Saints since managing the club provided QPR with only their third league win of the campaign.
Pochettino said: “We basically made two mistakes that led to conceding two goals.
“We put in an effort big enough to manage a better result but they had three chances and scored twice and we weren’t able to score more than them.
“Perhaps we didn’t create enough chances but we did have more chances than they did.”
The Saints boss, speaking through his translator, is still confident his team will avoid relegation this season but admits he needs to see some improvements.
“I have faith in my team, confidence in my team and we will work hard to get better results,” he said.
“We are just focussing that we need to get more points and improve certain aspects of the team.
“We are fully focused on that and that’s what is going to lead us to get better results.
“It’s hard to analyse taking into account the negative result we’ve had.
“We were lacking a bit of movement in the creation department and perhaps we were a bit static.”
Pochettino also defended his pressing tactics where he has been pushing forward the full backs which has left Saints somewhat exposed at the back at times.
“The thing is the full backs were where they had to be,” he insisted.
“They had to be on the defensive line and that’s where they were.
“I don’t agree with that thought because when we conceded those two goals at Newcastle and here they were in position. They were just mistakes we made.”
Saints also saw both Adam Lallana and Danny Fox withdrawn through injury.
“Lallana suffered a knock on his head he was quite groggy and that’s why he had to go off first half,” explained Pochettino.
“Fox had a knock on his quadriceps and he will be looked at over the next couple of days.”

If Adkins had to go, and in my opinion he should have stayed, then he should have been replaced at the end of the season.
It may have been OK for Cortese to change bank managers in the middle of the financial year, but not football managers, especially when the one who was sacked had got the team back to winning ways.

I always find it difficult to judge a Saints performance because you can't tell really how well the opposition played e.g. were Man City poor or Saints brilliant or a bit of both; same for QPR.
As I've said earlier I believe the crowd needs to get behind the team more in games like the QPR one in an effort to lift them - it was so flat on Saturday.
Anyway, the next game will be interesting in giving an insight into the rest of the season. What can the manager do in a match where at least a point should be a possibility if we can perform like we have in many games previous to the last?

Couple of silly errors were made at the back, and you just can't get away with at this level. Two longish balls into the channels and we didn't cope.
First one two defenders there, but neither dealt with it, but to be fair Fox should have closed down the striker, so not sure why he ran away to cover the line, as Maya would have done that-he should have been putting pressure on the striker.
Second one again a long-ish punt into the channel, and Maya's tackle was too soft and let Park get free( on another note, for Maya to have lost that 50-50 to a Korean player would have really stung him..) On the other hand, nobody tracked Bothroyd's run, and perhaps somebody should have blocked that easy cross coming in to him...
Anyway, after a couple of days relfection, I would actually say our problem seems almost as much to be upfront. We ha 70% of the ball, and 17 efforts, so to only get one goal from that is actually quite poor. Green made one worldy-save, but other than that, we didn't make it difficult enough for the keeper. So, although our defence needs to cut out the errors, if our attacking players could be a bit more clinical, it would be irrelevant.
One thing I'd like to see is Rickie being more central, and within striking range on more occasions, as he seems to drift out wide or deep to link up, which he's very good at, but unortunately we don't have any other real goalscorers in the team, so when he's there he's not able to threaten. Jay-Rod seems to also be a ' deeper' player, and Gaston/Adam etc are also playmakers. Perhaps we need to give Mayuka a run up front alongside Rickie, but then I feel he lacks the physical threat yet to impose himself on Premier league defenders.
Our targets shouldn't have changed-17th this year is all we need, then bring in some additional quality in the summer( another real goal threat in particular) and also allow a couple more of our young lads to step up to the first team.

Robert Green did well coming off the bench, credit to him.
We are still in the driving seat with destiny in our own hands, our goal difference is worth an extra point on the rest, not that I see it coming to that.
The signing of Forren is becoming more curious every week that he does not play.

There will be plenty of new faces brought in and Poch will put together the team he wants to play the football he wants. This is still very early days so don't expect miracles. I said it before there will be ups and downs, but it was obvious the anti NC brigade would seize on anything.
Before the game way too much emphasis was put on Harry returning. To some it was more important to boo the spiv than to get three points. Fair play if the paying punter wants to boo him but for it to become the main focus of the build up is a little sad, no? Again the small club mentality rearing it's ugly head! We are not a small club and as such shouldn't give a toss about the likes of him.
QPR are fighting for their lives, it was never going to be as straight forward as some had obviously believed. For now we need to stay up, which I am very confident we will do. Some fans need to understand that in the space of a few months we are not suddenly going to climb into the European places. That's for next season, until then be patient and get behind Poch and the lads!

Del Piero is still oozing class, he has been all season in the A League.
BUT .... It would not have worked out at Saints, he wouldn’t have coped with the pace at his age.
Take a bow Ryan Giggs, it’s amazing that he can still do it at the elite level.
For the record, Sydney also had Brett Emerton and Lucas Neil in their team. Glory brought on a debut substitute Danny De Silva just shy of his 16th birthday and Glory won 2-1. I will keep Mr Cortese informed of the young lad’s progress.

A few things contributed to that, including negative over physical play from QPR and some very suspect officiating (linesman by the Itchen for example)
That said in recent years we have learned to cope with both of these elements and get on with the game. The squad are obviously trying to adapt to that Pochettino wants and are under strict orders, but we just didn’t seem to be able to adapt. Preparation is obviously crucial but I just seemed like there was little response to what turned out to be their winning tactics
On a brighter note I cant see QPR winning enough games playing in that style. Circumstances will not conspire frequently enough

Sorry to say from my seat the team did not turn up for this game, I know we have all said it before but I do not believe that Fox is cut out for the Prem there two goals come from the left the first Fox ran towards goal and not to the man giving him the room and time to line up his shoot, could not see the 2nd but again it come from the left and Fox he'd nopt the only one Pun did not seem to be at his best RL seem to not want to jump but as it has been said we need to put it behind us and move on we need to get a result from Nowitch and I think we culd get a result ahome to Liverpool so come you saints heads up and one final push to the finishing line and safety
On Fox, I am as terrified everytime he plays as much as the next man, but he went off on 57 mins, so wasn't even on the pitch when they scored the second. Second goal also like the first, counter when we lost the ball, and Shaw was challenging high up to get it back , and the ball punted into the space. Maya lost a 50-50, and we didn't cover the centre forward's run.
Also, it's all opinions, but don't agree we never turned up-we played some great intricate stuff at times(probably easier to see that on TV as it's close up) but our problem seemed to be that although we held the ball, and moved it about well, we didn't really get them exposed at the back, or get in behind them. We seemed to be faced with a line of 7 or 8 hooped shirts at the minimum, whereas their goals came when we only had two back , and they used their strength and pace to put pressure on us on the break.

We wasted our get out of jail free card at putting decent space between us and the pack. It’s a kick in the boll0cks as they were gifted their goals and they offered little else. We are easy on the eye to watch with our possession football but sadly our cutting edge just wasn’t up to scratch.

As for our perfomance, the key word is "mistakes", the performance stats are frighteningly good, but due to "mistakes" we let in two goals.
That is where Mauricio needs to concentrate. In the big games we will step up and I think we will beat both Chelsea and Liverpool. Our boys respond to the big games !
In the meantime we will have to just put up with the background noise on these threads from those who are just so knotted up with jealousy they cannot think straight.

your comments about `how quiet` fans are is I`m afraid just a poor attempt to wind up saints fans. I think you will find that saints have a loud fan base, no louder or quieter than yours, man for man. the big difference is that we get over 30k in every week, whilst your lot are lucky to get 9k, so that's 3x+ more than you get. before you start going on about you having the `bestest best bestest bestest best fans in the world` tm let me tell you that you don't. if you did you would sell all your away tickets, you don't. if you did your fans would turn up to home games, they don't! poopeys fans have disappeared so fast its a wonder they are not on the wwf`s endangered species list!. saints have had more fans in every league than you even beating your prem gates when we were in L1.
your love of `arry is a wonderful thing for us to see. its a bit like Stockholm syndrome! he abused your club twice and has left you in the position you are now, weeks away from going out of business, and yet you still admire him. that just shows that as a fan of poopey your life is more about hating us than supporting your own team, as did cheering losing a game because it did us no favours. your fans are known for being a bit thick and a bit xenophobic and your continual abuse of MP just confirms this even more.
if saints did get relegated, and I doubt we will, but if we did then we would still be 2 leagues minimum above you! with a great infrastructure and playing staff. even if your club does survive you will be in L2 with a poss points deduction and the very real possibility of being relegated again, that would be funny.
if whilst all this is happening to your club you find some comfort by coming on here and making cheap racist remarks about our manager or idiotic comments about our fans being `quiet`, then please keep doing so. your future comments will be regarded in the same way your previous ones have been, that is nothing more than the bitter ramblings of a jealous immature little child, whos own children, if you ever meet a lady other than family (though that dosen`t seem to matter to your lot), will end up supporting saints! yes that's right future generations of poopey children will be walking around in red and white stripes! and that my dear fish gives a great deal of satisfaction to us saints fans!

I'm disappointed with the number of fans acting like we're suddenly in big trouble. Poch has taken over a squad of players and is trying to get them playing a certain way, anybody who believes we should be seeing instant consistency and results is not playing with a full deck.

Negatives - Lambert was poor and no where to be seen, would have liked to have seen him more in the box as we seemed to try and play long balls to our relatively short wingers! Ramirez looks as if he's lost interest, slow on the ball and far too casual. Lallana just doesn't seem up to it at this level, flashes of brilliance but generally rubbish. Fox, as discussed; useless waste of space, not intelligent enough, just ball watches the whole game and takes no notice of players around him or the areas of the pitch he should be stood in. yoshida, unlucky game for him, usually reliable. Puncheon, hope he hasn't just been playing for a contract, shades of his former self on Saturday.
Positives - Danny Fox is injured!! Schnerderlin looks better with every game, Cork looks menacing and J-Rod is starting to look the player his signing Fee suggests, just needs to work on his finishing/shooting.
Credit to QPR though, they look a decent side on the break, which is our weakness with these tactics unfortunately.
Anyway, we're not in the bottom 3, so who cares!! On to the next one.

if whilst all this is happening to your club you find some comfort by coming on here and making cheap racist remarks about our manager or idiotic comments about our fans being `quiet`, then please keep doing so. your future comments will be regarded in the same way your previous ones have been, that is nothing more than the bitter ramblings of a jealous immature little child, whos own children, if you ever meet a lady other than family (though that dosen`t seem to matter to your lot), will end up supporting saints! yes that's right future generations of poopey children will be walking around in red and white stripes! and that my dear fish gives a great deal of satisfaction to us saints fans!
oh and by the way, you've been told before this is not twitter. using the # makes no sense on here. its just a bit stupid.

I'm disappointed with the number of fans acting like we're suddenly in big trouble. Poch has taken over a squad of players and is trying to get them playing a certain way, anybody who believes we should be seeing instant consistency and results is not playing with a full deck.
It is more important to hate Harry than get behind the team.

Their hatred for us defines them as a club, which tells you all you need to know about them. I like to think we are not at that level and that we have a richer history. Just look at the players who have worn our shirt and those poor buggers who have worn theirs!

Saturday didn't go to plan, but expectations have been running higher due to the level of performances recently. We are not out of the woods yet but I don't think either manager can account for the specific errors at certain times which have cost us dear. As I said in my post yesterday, the defending for the first goal was schoolboy. After the last three seasons I think too many people thought that this was gonna be a walk in the park. We have to learn to overcome this style of play adopted by QPR and also by Wigan, Sunderland & Norwich at SMS. Chelsea and Liverpool should be more open like the Man C & Everton games, but Wet Spam will probably take the same approach.

We wasted our get out of jail free card at putting decent space between us and the pack. It’s a kick in the boll0cks as they were gifted their goals and they offered little else. We are easy on the eye to watch with our possession football but sadly our cutting edge just wasn’t up to scratch. Robert Green did well coming off the bench, credit to him. We are still in the driving seat with destiny in our own hands, our goal difference is worth an extra point on the rest, not that I see it coming to that. The signing of Forren is becoming more curious every week that he does not play.

They need a proper liquidizing to bring them back down good and proper.
Silly skunts.
Pochy is right, our system worked in that it was intended to create far more chances for us and restrict the opposition both of which we did. The players need to take responsibility a couple of individual errors at the back and missed chances up top. We have the squad we have and I'm sure will strengthen it in the summer - just need to better three other teams this season.
Anyone else see Coutinho? He set two up and was on hand for a tap in but Suarez didn't pass. We did our level best to sign him and I'm sure will go after others in the summer.

Adkins was a great manager but needs more experience overall to be a success in the prem wgich he will get to again, Chelsea were on their rse when we drew with them. Poch is one for the future, let him build and take us up the league, survival this year, top ten next year. He's decent but needs more than a few matches with a previous managers team to get things going the way he wants. I think that Poch will be a Southampton great and when he moves on it will be to a massive team, if you do your homework on him then you'd be excited for the future not morning the past...

Shame they don't realise , or rather, wont't admit that bar that couple of seasons in the sun, for the last 50 years they've remained solidly in our shadows. .. Jos did seem to make up for it in recent games but it is now clear that they should be kept as far away from the first team as possible. Fox has been given chances time and time again and his attitude and concentration are glaringly poor. It's not as if he doesn't have the attributes, which makes it worse, his errors are all down to switching off or, worse still, lack of desire.
He must be exceptional in training to earn these recalls, but now for me that's one error too many. Shaw needs to stay there for the rest of the season. It's not as if we have fixture congestion to tire him out.

The change of managers took place at the wrong time.
If Adkins had to go, and in my opinion he should have stayed, then he should have been replaced at the end of the season.
It may have been OK for Cortese to change bank managers in the middle of the financial year, but not football managers, especially when the one who was sacked had got the team back to winning ways.
I wouldn't waste your time worrying about us. We'll be alright.
If that is the case, I suppose that you were the one who thought that Rupert Lowe was doing a good job.

That may be true, but Adkins has had years more managerial experience that Poch. This is his First job as a manager.
This is why I consider that to change managers mid-season, for one with less managerial experience, was not the best idea.

All in all, bad day in the office.

Rickie's job was made difficult with poor service which Samba lapped up. I don't see how we can play Ramirez and Puncheon together, they seem to want to play in the same areas

I Can not agree with what is said about full back play. The back line was a disaster with Yoshida and Fox continually pulled out of position and loose, sloppy marking with the exception of Clyne. The best news all day was Fox going of injured, we actually had a left back after that. Cork and Morgan were fantastic and he is right about the lack of movement particularly Puncheon and because nobody passed to him, Ramirez seemed to give up. Considering just how bad QPR were, this has to be a very serious concern. Samba was winning every ball into the box, so what did we do, kept humping it into the box!
Shocking performance for many and so stop looking for excuses for it.
....namely as you say continual wasted high balls that big defenders cut out for fun...
....moreover if the opposing team is physical and the ref is not giving you protection ffs give it up and play on the ground...
..oh and shoot straight!

Like I said, just out of interest and all joking aside, how many Saints fans on here would endorse this?
What on earth are you doing on here anyway? You get yourself involved in posting about a game between Southampton and QPR yet you sound wounded when people come onto your site and post things you don't like? You're just reaping a little of what you're sowing.
Regulars on here know that I don't buy into the hatred of Portsmouth. I really don't care about Portsmouth except to hope that you survive the pitiful shennanigans that pass for your owners and potential owners.
So, I don't hold with any of it. But bear in mind that if troublemakers like you kept off here, perhaps people from here wouldn't troll your site.

I think alot of footy fans from around the country maybe wouldn't care. Putting aside any local rivalry, I think most footy fans see it as dirty that Pompey cheated them by surviving a couple of years in the top flight, while others went down, using players well beyond their means, so little sympathy? I think most would admit you have fans that make a bit of noise, but then again they've all jumped ship now your back at the level you've been the last 50 years ( Championship /League 1).
From a Saints point of view, bit harsh on the real fans, but the supporting of WBA, the disruption to a minute's silence for a local and footy in general legend, and the dark years of wild thugs causing mayhem...all these things numb any sense of compassion I'm afraid...karma...wha

`real` saints fans is just a pathetic phrase by the way, however nobody hates matty or franny and I don't think I have read that anywhere but from you. what saints fans want is for franny to do whatever he needs to do and whichever side wins then so be it. MLT was a great player for saints and will always have our sincere appreciation, what MLT is doing now though with his unfounded attacks on NC, much like yourself, is continually dragging the clubs name through the mud. the fans of saints do not like to see that, and make no mistake this is a one way attack by MLT NC does not respond to him.
apart from a few fools who didn't like NA before he was sacked I have not heard anyone say anything against him, NA will again do what he feels he needs to to get his rightful settlement, and I don't think anyone will have a problem with him doing that! don't make up rubbish to try to score cheap points!
how do you know NC is borrowing against next years prem money? well you don't so again your making carp up to score cheap points. if you are talking about the off shore loan facility that he set up, well until the figures are published no one the amount or length of that or any loan.
your assumption that saints will be sold if they are relegated is again your view and makes no financial sense whatsoever, £15mill+ has just been ploughed into the training ground/academy and £35mill into playing staff and then there is the cub loans that were converted to shares around £33mill, that's a total of £83mill minimum (how about that poopey fans, how many times would that have saved your club) that would need to be made back in a sale, can you see a champ team being sold for that?
your moaning about NC is starting to sound as obsessional as theboooorer!
oh and before a forget `saints legends have been abandoned` again they haven't have they. the appointment of Terry Paine MBE as the Club’s Honorary President shows legends are more than welcome at the club.

That may be true, but Adkins has had years more managerial experience that Poch. This is his First job as a manager.
This is why I consider that to change managers mid-season, for one with less managerial experience, was not the best idea.

your comments about `how quiet` fans are is I`m afraid just a poor attempt to wind up saints fans. I think you will find that saints have a loud fan base, no louder or quieter than yours, man for man. the big difference is that we get over 30k in every week, whilst your lot are lucky to get 9k, so that's 3x+ more than you get. before you start going on about you having the `bestest best bestest bestest best fans in the world` tm let me tell you that you don't. if you did you would sell all your away tickets, you don't. if you did your fans would turn up to home games, they don't! poopeys fans have disappeared so fast its a wonder they are not on the wwf`s endangered species list!. saints have had more fans in every league than you even beating your prem gates when we were in L1.
your love of `arry is a wonderful thing for us to see. its a bit like Stockholm syndrome! he abused your club twice and has left you in the position you are now, weeks away from going out of business, and yet you still admire him. that just shows that as a fan of poopey your life is more about hating us than supporting your own team, as did cheering losing a game because it did us no favours. your fans are known for being a bit thick and a bit xenophobic and your continual abuse of MP just confirms this even more.
if saints did get relegated, and I doubt we will, but if we did then we would still be 2 leagues minimum above you! with a great infrastructure and playing staff. even if your club does survive you will be in L2 with a poss points deduction and the very real possibility of being relegated again, that would be funny.
if whilst all this is happening to your club you find some comfort by coming on here and making cheap racist remarks about our manager or idiotic comments about our fans being `quiet`, then please keep doing so. your future comments will be regarded in the same way your previous ones have been, that is nothing more than the bitter ramblings of a jealous immature little child, whos own children, if you ever meet a lady other than family (though that dosen`t seem to matter to your lot), will end up supporting saints! yes that's right future generations of poopey children will be walking around in red and white stripes! and that my dear fish gives a great deal of satisfaction to us saints fans!
oh and by the way, you've been told before this is not twitter. using the # makes no sense on here. its just a bit stupid.

Just out of interest, we had Seed on here yesterday offering to fund a challenge to PCC's loan to the Portsmouth Supporters Trust in the hope that it would cause a holdup in the takeover that would prove 'fatal' to our club.
Like I said, just out of interest and all joking aside, how many Saints fans on here would endorse this?

But now I'm really confused as it says in these posts that it was Nicolas fault for changing the manager, MPs fault for pressing too high with the existing players, Fox's fault, the fans fault for singing about 'Arry and some tw@t has even suggested that it's because of the stats and QPR have never lost here.
I don't have a clue now but before any other suggestions are made can I just say that it is definitely NOT the fault of Ted Bates, Lawrie Mac, UKIP, Phil Boyer, The Pope for quitting, Adolf Hitler, Emerson Fitipaldi, Eastenders or the Banks (Barclays maybe!)
Some smartass will probably say it's Harry Redknapps fault!..Oops! that makes me the smartass!

On that basis, Matt Le Tiss, Franny, Big Mac and Pards would all be hate figures, no?
Well, as strange as it may seem to you from where you view these things, in the real world, all of those above are very much appreciated by just about every Saints fan on the planet.
I think I can see your problem, you just can't accept that the world is more complex than a straight divide between the good guys and the bad guys. It's really quite okay to support NC but not agree with everything he does, to love what Nigel did but move on now that he's gone, to adore Le Tiss - the player - but think he has been a complete prat by going public on matters which should have remained private.
I often wonder who would be our natural allies on here if we all met up; I'm d4rn sure of one thing, we wouldn't necessarily be mates with those we always agreed with and sworn enemies of all those we disagreed with.
So, like the rest of us (skates excepted), keep supporting the team, like most of us, keep NOT booing any players and please don't become Tebourba2; his hatred for NC is such that he's beyond hope or reason. I think you're better than that.

You talk about dropping down to the Championship without recognising our journey to the Premiership.
You talk about Nigel and neglect to mention who hired him.
You talk about failing on our "European dream" and fail to notice NC has brought us within touching distance.
You are right when you say there were assets to sell in the dark days and that a buyer would have been found, but would they have had the finances and ambition to achieve what's been done. Looking at other clubs, I very much doubt it!
None of the ex-Saints you have mentioned will be hated or become hate figures, however that does not mean they are beyond reproach for their actions. We all are and no-one gets a free pass. (Except J Saville of course!)
I don't care what you post and if your attitude is I'm right and the rest of the world is wrong, then fine. I'm just telling you that your bitterness, polarisation, bias and selectivity is making you look foolish.
Try looking at the story so far without prejudice. There are no guarentees that Nigel would have done any better or worse and no crystal ball to say what's right or wrong.
Many don't like the way NC does business but respect the fact he delivers the goods. Our finances will always be watched by the fans because of the problems of the past.
I find it difficult to believe that ANY Saints fan can be critical following our recent journey and as I've said before both they and you need to get some perspective.

Velleity wrote:Well aren't you precious. But booing good old Arry is acceptable? Deluded stain.
One thing, though. I respect anyone's right to have any view they want about Fox. I do not respect anyone's right to boo him.
And do me a favour; I've never used the words "Skate" or "Skunt" so please don't refer to me as a stain. That's common as well. I'll let you off, though, as I don't think you can help it...

Any "real" Saints fan knows that if it wasn't for NC being an integral part of saving this club, we would be playing in a lower league than Pompey right now! YES! Right now! Thats not fantasy or sycophancy. It's plain undeniable fact.
Instead we are in the best league in the world. No-one hates or despises Nigel or Matty or Franny, we just have our own opinions about what is going on at present.
I know you like to argue but exaggerating and polarisng just makes you look foolish. Get some perspective.

Alright, let's get over it now. It was just a freak result and nothing more. We had 70% possession and we had 19 shots on target to their 3. I would say 99 times out of 100 we'd have won that easily.
Now, to Norwich. Home of Alan Partridge, Coleman's mustard and Delia c***ing Smith. It'll be amazing.
I do apologise if you think differently.
God bless Mr Partridge. Delia on the other hand is just a carrot crunching substitute for Nigella. Rump Canary souffle on toast next please.

Let's look at that shall we?
08/09 - 11/12
Tranfers in
Leicester £7.5m
Cardiff £7.6m
Ipswich £5.8m
Hull £12m (09/10 - 11/12) or £22m
Saints £5.1m
This doesnt include transfers out. Ox alone wipes this away to show a net profit of £7m.
Money invested has gone into the academy and infrastructure and purchases once in the Prem.
There is no guarentee of survival in this league, no matter how much you throw at it but, so far, NC has done a hell of a job in getting us here on very little outlay.
This is the perspective I speak of
