Le Tiss: Saints can emulate class of '94
7:30am Thursday 7th March 2013 in Sport
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
MATT LE TISSIER
Saints will hope to evoke the spirit of 1994 when they travel to Norwich this Saturday for a crucial Premier League battle.
The club’s last top-flight win at Carrow Road came 19 years ago, as Alan Ball’s team won a heart-stopping encounter 5-4.
Ken Monkou’s header deep into injury time helped power a Matt Le Tissier-inspired Saints side not just to victory, but also towards one of many incredible great escapes they orchestrated in that era.
The situation is not so critical now, but back-to-back defeats have kept Mauricio Pochettino’s men firmly involved in this season’s relegation battle.
Three points this weekend would represent an enormous step towards safety, though.
Le Tissier is confident that today’s Saints side can overcome the disappointment of last weekend’s home defeat to rock-bottom QPR and emulate the class of ’94 with an important victory away to the Canaries.
“The QPR game was a bit of a blip, but I think they should still have enough belief from the Manchester City result to put that to one side,” said Le Tissier, who scored a hat-trick in the 5-4 thriller.
“It was one bad weekend, but let’s focus on the performance and result against City. That proved we are capable of beating the best sides in this division – and a Champions League team.”
Le Tissier added: “There are still a few more games left and we are in a better position now than we were back then (in 1994).
“We’re out of the bottom three, but, even so, we’ve got two tough home games coming up after this, against Liverpool and Chelsea, so it’s pretty important we do get something out of this game, even if it’s a draw.
“A point isn’t a bad result at all this weekend, as opposed to 1994 when it probably was.
“It would just get us that little bit further away.
“We also have the advantage of our goal difference being better than all the teams below us, which is almost like having an extra point.
“If we were to get three points, you would probably be looking at getting another two wins and a draw from the last nine games, and I’m pretty certain there’s enough talent in that squad to do that.”

I think it's a good article and I LOVE how Matt always talks about 'we'.
I do think that the constant use of ex-Saints (and Matt in particular) can get a tad tiresome, but I appreciate that the DE has to feed on what it can get, which, as I'm sure you'd be delighted to point out, rarely comes from the club.
You really need to sort out your entrenched idea that people are totally 'for' or 'against' one thing or person. Some of us can see a bit of good and a bit of bad in everyone and everything and that includes the DE, NC, Matt and even you.

To ensure there is no repeat of the silly SCUMMER Dock strike story, I think the stats by 'Ongoing Drought' are incorrect.
Both Pompey and saints joined the Football league in 1920/21 and in the 85 seasons until last year the respective positions were:
Pompey Saints
1st Tier (ie Div 1 Prem) 33 35
2nd Tier (Div 2/Championship) 40 39
3rd Tier (Div 3/league 1) 10 11
4th Tier (Div4/league 2) 2 -
seasons in higher League Position 26 49
seasons with higher av attendance 35 50
of course Pompey have more titles but since 1960 they have always played second fiddle to their local rivals apart from 2004/5 -2009/10

To ensure there is no repeat of the silly SCUMMER Dock strike story, I think the stats by 'Ongoing Drought' are incorrect.
Both Pompey and saints joined the Football league in 1920/21 and in the 85 seasons until last year the respective positions were:
Pompey Saints
1st Tier (ie Div 1 Prem) 33 35
2nd Tier (Div 2/Championship) 40 39
3rd Tier (Div 3/league 1) 10 11
4th Tier (Div4/league 2) 2 -
seasons in higher League Position 26 49
seasons with higher av attendance 35 50
of course Pompey have more titles but since 1960 they have always played second fiddle to their local rivals apart from 2004/5 -2009/10

But you know what? This is a farewell show and the whole thing was tinged with a genuine sense of sadness that this has been a unique partnership between a songwriting team and a group of incredibly charismatic performers that we're unlikely to ever see repeated in this country. I mean, I know this is controversial but I don't think Girls Aloud found their voice until their third album but when they did they were untouchable. No group will be given that time to develop in the modern music industry.

My great granddad Reggie wrote in his contemporary diary: "Five to nothing down at half time. Our attack had been clobbered to bits by Huge Mad Hughie, their centre half (who's actually in Swindon looney bin for chopping an Irish hole digger's ears off, but who's let out to play for them on Saturday's). But then our manager Rab McGonnigle brought one of the kids on.
It was Jackie Higgins and he ran 'em ragged. The little wriggler goes up cleaning chimneys all week and covered in soot, he looked like one of them heathen Zulu blighters. Very first thing Jackie did was get hard clobbered by Huge Mad Hughie. But as they were both on the floor, Jackie, quick as a ferret, stuck his little head up Hughie's shorts and bit about half an inch off the end of Hughie's willy. The ref saw nothing except for blood and soot and Hughie went off screaming "Aaaaaargh, oooww, aaargh.... watch out boys, aaaaargh....'e chewed a big lump off the end me whatsit."
They watched out alright. They didn't dare go near our Jackie. He scored six as they all pretended to fall over and miss tackles - or lost speed by trying to run with both hands on their three piece suites.
I'm not saying of course that Spiderman or anyone else in our team should bite any of the Norwich players. But they need to show all of Jackie's fighting spirit.
The Echo also needs to polish up on our history. Le Tiss may be a legend, but I doubt he'd ever have been bold enough to do to Huge Mad Hughie what our Jackie did.

I think Matt speaks well here. We’ve gotta forget about Saturday and focus on what will have to be a well earned 3 points if we were to beat Norwich. We will have to be on our game for this one as this is one that Norwich will definitely have down as a win for them. No doubt we have the talent to get a result but the lads need to be prepared for a hard fight!! Stating the bleeding obvious but 3 points will be massive for us! The teams below us can’t slip up every week especially as some are playing each other. COYR’s we can do it!

They have PRIDE in their shabby ground and chavvy fans.
Their club has had its fair share of LUCK - not being closed down despite running at such a loss etc etc etc etc
And finally if there is any justice the club will be DEAD (in its current form anyway).
Therefore skate history can be summed up as PRIDE LUCK DEAD - which can be re-arranged to spell out a description of one of their fans who insist on trying to slag Saints off - A DELUDED PR*CK (if you are stuck put the I in place of the *).

Is this not after all what football thrives on and UK newspapers exist for. There is not a single UK national newpaper for instance that had not got an ajenda other than to purely print the "news". I find this pretty interesting really. I am not offended by being called a liar on here, its not a problem, but is a bit odd really given all the double standards I keep seeing. I think the non-pompey posters on here are 95% top people, very funny, very articulate and very knowledgable but the automatic resistance to some topics I think stange sometimes.

Fox was unfortunate, but did put his hand up and that is dangerous thing to do in the area, harsh but we have been denied many more valid penalties. Refs won't give us Penalties because they know what is inevitable when Rickie plonks the ball on to the spot. Having Reffed a few games myself in the past, I can appreciate that they have to make their decisons in an instant, easy to judge afterwards with hindsight and replays, we haven't had a "homer" Ref. this Season in my opinion. It's time we did.

Also Fox's handball was not a penalty since under the laws of the game you can not award a foul for accidental handball.....handbal

Natures way of finding the weakest in the herd. From the performances this season based on MOTD footage saints are one of the stronger teams in the division when all is well. Cut out basic defensive errors and turn the lost points into points in the bag. 24 at least this season, add that to our total and we would be on the European fringe.

The MLT-NC meet that was never going to happen a case in hand. Everyone accepts a version of events without a shred of proof, just to suit the comfort zone. This is not surprising at all of course, its how labour got to power and stayed there for 13 years. Its called spin. Finally an observation that I find quite strange really, in a world where information part in confidence and part in public is key to how organisations and businesses function, why is proof required all the time by some. Why not just accept something for what it is , speculation, assumption, conjecture, conclusions.... nothing has to be proven absolutely all of the time for people to talk about subjects. No offence intended by any of this by the way, just friendly discussion.....

Its fine now I know that people can pick and choose when its fine to be 100% behind the club.... for the record I was not a fan of Rupert Lowe, I think his motives were misguided often and he lost sight of the needs of the club....but a lot written about him was just rumour and gossip... very few articles of "proof" emerged to hold water. What it comes down to really is that you want me to "give it a rest" because you either A. think I am a liar ,,,, or B. you know I am not and it bothers you..... now I come to think about it, thats fair enough. You know what can and can't be posted here (despite some of the things you have said) so its easier to have me penned as a liar than not.... So like the others, stick with liar,,, that coupled with a noce hot milky drink should bother you a lot less.... ;0)
MGRA wrote:Oddly enough, initially I admit I was supportive of Rupert, in my ignorance I had got it wrong, it was people explaining what was going on that swayed me to go in the right direction, using proof and quoting sources to prove the point, in the end we won the day did we not?. Similar situation here, until someone can prove to me with categorical evidence that there is wrong doing at the top, I will give NC the benefit of the doubt. Can't go on inuendo and personal issues from individuals, it doesn't work like that. I still respect MLT big time, but am not happy with a couple of things that have been said by him, it's no big deal. You call me obsessive, well you are not exactly showing a liberal attitude with the bias posting that you have put on here recently, just maybe you are misguided, maybe you are right, only time will tell, but repeating the same thing over and over again, won't solve it. Take the advice of other posters if you can't accept my polite request to give it a rest, perhaps you could listen to them? Not too much to ask is it?
OSPREYSAINT wrote:you talked about entirety !? So did you therefore support Rupert Lowe 100% since he was part of the entirety of SFC ??? You can put a few bob on your fancy in the Fratton Stakes at 3.30pm. The runners are:
Charity Robber 2-1 fav
Gone for Broke 4-1
Black Hole 6-1
Doomed Dobbin 7-1
Pull My Plug 7-1
Dodo 8-1
There's still room for two more riders if anyone has a suitable pony to enter.

He has never denied the club accusations that he acted contrary to their agreement to keep it confidential. If it were not true this would be totally out of character for him vocal as he is.
A poll at the time only showed 30% of fans in Le Tiss's corner over this.
It is a shame because if the gap could be bridged it could be fantastic!
