Saints defender earns international recall

DANNY FOX DANNY FOX

Saints left back Danny Fox has been recalled to the Scotland squad by manager Gordon Strachan.

The former St Mary’s boss has named Fox in his first competitive squad for World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Serbia.

Strachan sprang a major surprise by calling up Brighton midfielder Liam Bridcutt.

The 23-year-old Reading-born midfielder was joined by Dundee United winger Gary Mackay-Steven and Peterborough winger George Boyd in getting his first call-up.

Boyd, who is currently on loan at Hull, previously featured for Scotland B in 2009 but had never made a full squad.

There is no place for Rangers' Lee Wallace or Phil Bardsley, who has not played for Sunderland since January 19.

Blackpool winger Matt Phillips and QPR forward Jamie Mackie both drop out of the squad as does Celtic captain Scott Brown, whose season appears to be over because of an abductor injury.

In-form Hibernian striker Leigh Griffiths was not included but Chris Burke retains his place after Strachan handed him his first international cap in more than six years in the 1-0 friendly win over Estonia last month.

Just how bad would you have to be to be not selected ahead of Fox for Scotland left back?

Just don't get this anti-Fox thing that happens on here, tbh I think that young Luke Shaw is being found out at this level and it's good to have a decent alternative.
To some of you, every goal we concede is his fault but when Shaw makes a mistake it's conveniently brushed under the carpet.
He is a good honest pro giving 100%, get off his case.

Gaz when he's been on the pitch and we have conceded especially the last 3 he has been very much at fault for all 3. Criticism justified imo likewise Shaw deserves it for the 2nd goal on Sat as does Yoshida

Couldn't disagree with gaz anymore, and couldn't agree with SO50 anymore!

Sorry mate, it's not anti-Fox it is simple facts.

Off the top of my head I can't remember a serious error that's cost us a goal by Shaw (bar the second goal last week when he was beaten by a player).

However, I can remember at least five or six occasions this season, maybe more, when Fox has unquestionably lost us a goal.

Now, when you consider the margin between going up is so tiny (a last minute goal vs Everton and collapse against Boro in injury time) cost us our Premier League survival last time, it is not overstating it to say that Fox's inability at this level could cost us dear:

Man City away
West Brom away
Newcastle away
QPR at home
Man Utd at home

That's just a handful of games off the top of my head where he's gifted one or more goals to the opposition by switching off or making bad decisions.

He's not the only one to cost us goals, but it's the manner in which he does it that worries me and, if he's giving 100%, why is he failing to track player's runs on so many occasions?.

You are right about what you say in your last sentence but what you say about him being a decent alternative to Luke shaw is flawwed.
We have conceded many goals both this season and last from clubs attacking our left back possition and it was very noticably different when Luke joined the team.
I accept Luke has been caught out lately, this is down to his inexperience.
Danny Fox cannot use that for an excuse, as he is a senior player.
His forward play is his forte but he can't defend.
It is just a sad fact that he is not Premier standard.
That said I say good luck to him in representing Scotland as I would any of our players.
COYS.

Good for him, if he gets some time on the pitch and plays well, he may get his sharpness back, he isn't as bad as some of you make out, for pities sake give the personal bashing stuff a rest and get behind your players, good and bad.

"Off the top of my head I can't remember a serious error that's cost us a goal by Shaw (bar the second goal last week when he was beaten by a player)."

Wigan's late equaliser has slipped your mind then? He was also slow to get back for Newcastle's first. Had either of those incidents involved Fox, he'd have been cr4pped all over on here. Likewise, had Shaw been penalised for the Newcastle penalty, most on here would have been quick to come to his defence.

I don't think Fox is good enough but I do believe in being balanced.

I was never a defender, so I am not the best person to judge but I think Fox could have made different choices when his clearance cannoned of Jos for Newcastle's 4th goal and I imagine he should have stayed with the player rather than covering the line against QPR. However, lest we forget, Fox had a decent game against Man City.

Moreover, he's a Saints player and, unless he ever disrespects the shirt, he will always have my full support.

Good point Dan, these guys on here are doubting Gordon Strachans integrity, I thought they used to worship the ground he walked on.

Tony Mowbray clearly didn't rate him that highly ( think he had him at celtic ) cos when we played boro at home last season as soon as possible they targeted our left flank - an obvious tactic To be fair to Fox he coped well that day in what was an easy win. I like Fox as a guy and believe he always give 100% but unfortunately he is just not good enough defensively at this level. Was pleased he wasn't abused when subbed last week though.
