Saints On This Day – March 8 1952: QPR 2 Saints 1 Eric Day’s goal wasn’t enough to earn Saints a point as they conceded an 82nd minute goal as they suffered their first loss in five games to a QPR side that would go on to finish bottom of Division 3 (South).

1958: Saints 0 Reading 1 Table topping Reading arrived at The Dell, where a season’s best 22,830 crowd packed the ground. But Saints, in the season where they blasted a club record 112 league goals in Division 3 (South), fired a rare blank.

1968: Saints 2 Fulham 1 On a Friday night fixture at The Dell, the Saints made it three wins on the bounce which was their best run in the old First Division at that time.

Two goals from Mick Channon was enough to earn the victory.

1969: Saints 1 Sunderland 0 Sunderland visited The Dell on the back of a run that had not seen them collect an away point in five months, and thanks to Ron Davies header in the 44th minute that dismal run continued.

1980: Leeds 2 Saints 0 Saints struck the woodwork twice and had two goals disallowed as they fell to defeat at Elland Road.

The fixture, which included goals from ex-Pompey boss Paul Hart and Derek McFarlane, saw Martin McGrath come on as a sub in what would be his first and only Saints appearance.

2000: West Ham 2 Saints 0 Paulo Wanchope and Trevor Sinclair goals condemned Saints to disappointing defeat at Upton Park against a Hammers side managed by Harry Redknapp.

2008: Blackpool 2 Saints 2 Saints made it four Championship draws on the bounce under Nigel Pearson.

Stern John rescued a point after the hosts had scored two quick goals after half time to turn the game on its head.

Saints had taken the lead through a Gregory Vignal.

2011: Saints 3 Yeovil 0 Two goals from Lee Barnard and a solo effort from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain helped Saints to another three points during their League 1 promotion winning campaign.
