Comment: Saints' impressive vital stats prove why survival is key

Saints executive chairman Nicola Cortese has masterminded the rise through the divisions Saints executive chairman Nicola Cortese has masterminded the rise through the divisions

If anybody needed further reminding of why it’s so important that Saints avoid relegation this season then it has been provided by today’s financial figures released from St Mary’s.

Traditionally the club have only released 12 months of accounts at a time, normally running to a year ending up to July. Today they took the different step of releasing figures right up until the end of December 2012.

The reason appears clear – it shows just how far they have come and will put the minds of supporters somewhat more at ease.

To read that Saints were losing money last season and that wages were running at 102 per cent of turnover would have been shocking.

But to follow that up with the realisation that, despite presumed rises in wages since reaching the top flight, the figure has fallen to 59 per cent of turnover due to a massive revenue increase settles the heart rate once more.

It is a clever, sensible and well thought out move from Saints, but also one that underlines why they need to stay up.

To run as they were last season is not a sustainable long term business model that many companies would be looking to follow.

It was a gamble backed by the owners that eventually paid off.

With a new TV deal set to boost income dramatically again next season for top flight clubs the financial future for Saints could look even healthier as long as the team can pick up enough results in the remaining ten games to ensure they are still in there.

Man, I wish the Echo would get its head out of Nicola's backside just once.

(That was irony, for the benefit of slow-witted readers. I agree with every word of this piece. Well done everyone.)

My worry is, that if fate does the dirty on us and we get dumped back down into the Championship, just how bad would that really be? Parachute payments? Would they be enough to compensate? I have no worries about Championship football though, I enjoyed many more of those games than I have the Premier games, although I guess results have not helped. I would still support them whatever happened. Apologies if this is a bit negative, I am hoping we can stay up and consolidate, I will still settle for 17th.

OS - I completely agree with you.

don't matter what league we are in, Saint till I Die

but I too will be happy with 17th since that will mean this seasons objective has been achieved - Premiership Survival.

Next season is the battle to push up the league.

after that.... well lets wait and see.

It's fantastic the club is doing so well financially. The stability has come at a price of ruffling feathers around the place and instability in first team management admittedly driven by the imperative nature of staying up.. I trust Nicola Cortese in business, I was gutted when he sacked Nigel Adkins but have come round to accept it as the chairman is getting all the reports from players and coaches as to the feeling in the camp across the board.. none of us have that knowledge. For that reason I assume there was a feeling Nigel didn't have the confidence of the camp and he was replaced.
The evidence of the first couple of games under Poch demonstrated a new level of pressure and effort from Saints.. to watch the chasing and effort to cover is a total and utter joy. In the last couple of game we've slipped a bit and made a few mistakes.. We have to have faith that within our current regime is the skill and knowledge collectively to meet the challenge, win a couple of games, gain some points and push up the table well beyond safety.
All positive Saints fans lift your hearts and voice and sing us to victory.. All the doubters and negative regular posters and readers.. come on folks we won;t be adding players of changing managers, you won;t make a difference by moaning or trying to blame individual players but you will by giving support to the lads in the last game of the season.. It MUST BE SFC TOGETHER AS ONE... Lift the bloody roof off St Mary's with nothing but home support!!! Our Away fans are the best in the country by far.. Join the Army and get on the EuroStar... COYR Up The Glorious Saints.

One thing that is puzzling me at the moment, that is the number of players that are dormant, but still on the books, some are not getting any competitive football, but we are still paying their wages, some could be earning a living helping lower league clubs, and would lower our wage bill even further. Presumably they are still serving the Club in other ways and are not just inactive?
