Pochettino apologises for Clattenburg confrontation
5:51pm Saturday 9th March 2013 in Sport
Mauricio Pochettino
Mauricio Pochettino has apologised for storming onto the pitch to remonstrate with referee Mark Clattenburg after his side were held to a goalless draw at Norwich.
Saints played superbly well in the snow and rain at Carrow Road and should have had the game won before Clattenburg awarded Norwich an injury time penalty for a foul by Luke Shaw on Grant Holt.
Saints disagreed with the decision and saw what they perceived to be justice done as Boruc dived to his right to make the save and preserve the point.
After the game Pochettino came onto the pitch to confront Clattenburg but afterwards was repentant.
He said: “I do know that (you shouldn’t go on the pitch) and I apologise.
“Sometimes you can lose control a little but us managers have to control ourselves.
“Sometimes I feel as if I am playing the game as well on the sidelines.”
He added: “I am happy overall with the team’s performance because we regained that fighting spirit that perhaps we lost a little bit against QPR.
“I think my team played better than last week and in the 90th minute before that penalty was given we deserved to be leading the game.
“So my anger was double fold that it shouldn’t have been a penalty and that we should have been up in the game by that time.”

We are going to stay up.
but it won't be easy.
Easy isn't the Saints way.
If we wanted easy we would not support our local team, we could become plastics.
Support the Saints, you know it makes sense.

Maybe we'll perform better against supposedly superior opposition, IE 'Pool n Chelski, a la Man City?

Respect to the Saints fans at Norwich today - it sounded like a home game for us for long periods listening on Player. Getting fed up (and a little bit concerned if Wigan win game in hand) with being the best team and not winning. Would be prepared to accept being a bit more boring and taking 3 points. One point per game might not be enough this year. COME ON YOU SAINTS!

An absolutely scandalous decision by the referee to give a penalty to Norwich at that time, in that place, for what happened. Disgraceful. There are two considerations: the first is how many points dodgy decisions cost you, and the second is how many more you would have had without them.
Some hard evidence needs collecting, also that poor refereeing decisions could be held ACCOUNTABLE. (Wish) The laziness of "oh it's OK it evens itself out" is just boiilocks (unless you can prove it to me!!)

Alas, it's flawed because, if a ref knew the season's stats ahead of a game, s/he might be tempted to 'even things up' rather than make what s/he thought was the right decision.

Sharp may not have lots of pace but he's a great goal-sneak in the box and that's what we're lacking - ruthlessness in front of goal - we need him back pronto.
Imo we already have the best goal poacher in the league - Rickie. The problem for me is we are utlising him to make play for others which involves him being on the perimeter of the penalty area instead of him being the target man within it.

Main point in the last 2 games is the lack of goals coming from other players. If Rickie doesn't score, we don't. Gaston, Ads and J-Rod need to start pitching in and it was crying out for Punch yesterday. Start taking our chances and we'll pull away. Simple.

Seedhouse the Unrepentant wrote:You see how it is Seed? You did it yourself right there..."I personally believe..."!!
batesieboy wrote:That's a really good point. We get stats on every thing else, why don't we get stats on wrong decisions? All this talk of 'even out' would be proven or disproven. I personally believe it would be disproven in favour of the Manure's and Citeh's of this world but who knows - Opta have missed an obvious one here.
An absolutely scandalous decision by the referee to give a penalty to Norwich at that time, in that place, for what happened. Disgraceful. If Boruc had not saved that penalty, it might have been the point that took us down. THESE THINGS DO NOT EVEN THEMSELVES OUT OVER THE SEASON!!!!!! That is a myth that needs dispelling with some PROFESSIONAL statistics. NOT AMATEUR DECISIONS. (Rant over, but I haven't stopped all my life trying to explain this!)
Also once the stats are collected they need even deeper analysis. We will get a couple of lucky decisions each year but bet they're not away to Utd or Arsenal.
Alas, it's flawed because, if a ref knew the season's stats ahead of a game, s/he might be tempted to 'even things up' rather than make what s/he thought was the right decision.
Clattenburg made a mistake by not giving a penalty against Shaw in the first half when he tugged Holt's shirt and did commit an infringement. And then he evened it up after appearing to consult a linesman who never gave the penalty in the first place. The linesman probably said he was unsighted. (more politics, possibly by both officials)
You can argue the rights and wrongs of evening things up until the cows come home. As a spectator or a supporter I would say it was morally wrong, or morally right depending on circumstances. If I was an ambitious career referee, I would probably do it because it would be the politic thing to do to protect my career.
As a Saints supporter I thought it was an awful decision. If it had happened 30 minutes earlier it would have been a bad decision but I would have understood why he did it, but we would still have had time to recover and get a goal back. At the point he gave the penalty we clearly didn't have the time to recover.
To wrong a right in the way Clattenburg did, was not right at the time he did it, but it can protect a referees career. Or doom a team to relegation. The referee will always be more interested in his own career than the future of any given club. Especially one outside of the top six where the reportage will have a lower profile and the manger's reaction and influence will be a lot lower. If he had been officiating a top six game his decision may have been different depending on who was at home. (More politics) Life ain't black and white.
The positives were the boost to Boruc's confidence, which is great for us as we face two very tough home games where we need a goalkeeper on top form. And we have a point from Norwich which we wouldn't have had without his penalty save. It could be the point that saves us from relegation. I hope it isn't!

Our finishing, however, is not matching the approach play.
I feel we are trying to take chances with first time shots, when with a little more composure the ball could be controlled first.
For example, Lallana's 2nd half effort over the bar. You could argue that he had time and space to control the ball and then shoot.
Or Fonte trying to hit a volley from 25 yards, when there was nobody near him.
Perhaps we can get David Connolly back on a pay as you go contract, to come off the bench, which incidentally would screw the skates at the same time.
Win win.

I've studied in detail every match we've played this season and so far every single decision that has gone against us has been wrong except for one hand ball Spiderman made in the opening match against Citeh and one offside against Gaston in the away Manure match.
On the other hand, every single decision in our favour - without exception - has been correct.
The stats speak for themselves. Only two of the 387 decisions against us were correct - so the opposition were awarded 385 unjustified decisions.
How can the authorities allow this scandal to stand - 99.48% incorrect decisions against us?
Either I'm biased or the standard of referees is complete sh!te or there's match fixing going on on a grand scale. Having twice been awarded the gold medal for Impartiatilty and Fair Judgement from the University of Guanzou Psychology Dept, you can take it that one of the latter two is the case.

Well yesterday I was at the game and they did I have to admit. Clear shirt pull by Shaw in the firsr half - not given. Never a pen in the second half - gioven - err that seems a bit even I think!!
Don't get me wrong I was furious at the late decision but if I was a Norwich fan I would have been equally furious at the first one.
As a kid (jumpers for goal posts and all that)n if you were kicked my coach would say get up and don't let him know he hurt you. Now if an opponent gets within a f@rts breath of you the coach tells you to try and con the ref and get the other guy sent off! So everyone in football including the fans gave to accept that because refs are being 'played' they are going to get some decisions wrong. So we've just got to accept it.
If we want better refs - the coaches and players have to look at themselves first and make it easier for a ref to give a good decision. Not ranting and raging that the ref got it wrong. Unless of course we want to sanitise the sport further by eliminating any form of contact and revert to a zonal game with a maximum number of passes before possession has to be given up to the other team.
Rant over.
Great performance on a dreadful surface. Another omne that got away. It's going to be a close one!

My question mainly is not about Yoshi but when we have a natural right sided right back, why not play him and leave Yosh in the middle. When Richardson has come on he has done little wrong.
Dave said we opted for height in playing him and bringing on Guly over Puncheon, but I still don't understand it.

You're right, those 2 decisions evened themselves out (although, timewise, the impact of a scored first-half penalty is incomparable in magnitude to a scored 92nd minute one).
The thing is, if you apply that across a season (especially this one), you won't be able to.
I didn't see the game yesterday but others have confirmed that we could have had a penalty, too. Furthermore, at Newcastle, just about every 50-50 went against us, they scored a goal from an offside position and another after a foul that should have gone the other way; and all that before the penalty which probably wouldn't have been given at the other end or if there had not already been 2 ridiculous shouts by the Toon fans.
It's not just us, Norwich claim they've not had a penalty all season, while, yesterday, Reading were denied by a (not) offside shout and Swansea had a 'good' goal disallowed.
Offsides? Toon at home - Jay offside? Man City away, Tevez onside?
It's probably why I feel so little sympathy for Manure after Nani's mid-week sending off, it was a small slice of re-balance.
As for conning refs, it's why I continue to advocate video evidence. Controversial, I know, but would Shaw have pulled Holt's sleeve if he knew there was a chance that a 5th official was authorised to tell the ref to award a penalty?
A final point, let's imagine one of our chnaces had (luckily) crept in and, after 92 minutes, we had been (a bit luckily) leading 1-0. Then the penalty ...... and it had (luckily) crept in under Borac's dive. That 'evening up' would have been harder to stomache this morning.

I just imagined that (luckily) we were three up with four minutes to go. Then a big fat ugly Norwich fan chucked a bit of banana skin on the pitch and Artur (unluckily) slipped on it and dropped the ball into his own net. Then, during a harmless Norwich cross, Hooi (unluckily) felt a sharp, momentary and inexplicable twinge in his left testicle and mis-kicked straight into Holt's path for him to (luckily) score a sitter. Then Norwich equalised after a hard hit Holt shot going harmlessly wide, luckily pinged off Jose's shoulder onto Yosh's right buttock and then ricocheted on to Spiders knee and off Boruc's head on to the crossbar, where it bounced off on to Cork's back and (unluckily) into the net.
Then, in the dying seconds, a Holt shot, going fractionally wide, unluckily for us, was hit by a fragment of a meteorite (in a 78 trillion billion million to 1 chance) and diverted in to the net for a (lucky) Norwich winner.
Anyway, I thought after thinking all that, phew, I'm really glad didn't happen. It really doesn't take much imagination to be very happy with just a point.

Luckily, the omens are good for the rest of the season; there are literally NO - and I mean NO - meteorites expected anywhere near any Saints game between now and the end of May.
Alas, the negs on here will see that as an opportunity for a fragment one to deflect the ball FOR a Saints goal (a 98 trillion billion million to 1 chance, because we're generally not as lucky as the average meteorite-assisted team) as an opportunity missed - which, of course, will be all Guly's fault.

You see a lot more of the game on match choice than match of the day. We played really well again. Not sure of the subs though. Richardson has done well on the right. Yoshida is not comfortable on the right and pumped a few wasted balls forwards. He played relatively well but we need him in the centre. I have nothing against Guly but why not bring on your in frm man Puncheon in your time of need if you are not going to start him?
It is reminiscent of decisions that Adkins made which did not work and stopped because of it? A bit late in the day to learn these things all over again!
Still, the style of play and confidence of the team was evident. j Rod had a great game. We need to take our chances, and/or cut out crucial silly mistakes but other than that we have a good team who play entertaining football and can defend.
His distribution can be equally as good as it is bad, but his reading of the game makes him a better player than some give him credit for.
My question mainly is not about Yoshi but when we have a natural right sided right back, why not play him and leave Yosh in the middle. When Richardson has come on he has done little wrong.
Dave said we opted for height in playing him and bringing on Guly over Puncheon, but I still don't understand it.
Adkins said, after he had bought Clyne, that Saints had taken advantage of Clyne's lack of height, home and away when he was a Palace player, by pushing Lambert on to him.
Could be Clyne's weakness???

Something must be done about this problem. Things certainly do NOT even themselves out.

Agree with SaintJD above - the last time I remember us playing badly this season was at the Emirates, we've come a long way since.
I believe we are due to convert the chances we make and give someone a thorough spanking, hopefully Chelskum if not before...

We will beat Chelsea and, coupled with a reasonable return in our other home games and the odd away draw we will stay up. Will be close, but I've not really seen us play badly under MP, or probably NA before him, for months. Some sloppy defending, but we've not really been outplayed by anyone. All we really need is to get another three points on the board quickly to draw the teams above into it and I don't think we'll look back. But people shouldn't get too worried if we get well beaten by Liverpool next week - they look pretty awesome in attack and will beat most teams comfortably at the moment.
Saturday and QPR were missed opportunities. When MP took over we had 22 points. Whatever Cortese had in mind you might say our target at that time was 40 so all MP had to do was get 18 from 16 - not even as good as Adkins' 19 pts from his last 16 in charge. And before anyone aims flack my way let it be known I am fully behind the manager and the team it is just that sweating on survival at this stage was presumably not what Cortese had in mind when he appointed MP? We should have been 10-11 pts of clear of 18th place by now.

Let's give Cortese the benefit of the doubt and say 38pts are needed to stay up. That was a point a game from the 16 MP had when he took over. He's behind the curve already with 6 pts from 7 games. 9 pts from 9 games to finish on 37 is cutting it fine. I don't get the esteem in which Cortese is held; to me he is looking more and more reckless with each passing Saturday.
The appointment of MP was not made with the idea he would get more points for Saints by the end of the season than NA would have...it was made with the long term future of the club in mind. MP was a manager in demand so Cortese acted fast before losing him to another club.
