An absolutely scandalous decision by the referee to give a penalty to Norwich at that time, in that place, for what happened. Disgraceful. If Boruc had not saved that penalty, it might have been the point that took us down. THESE THINGS DO NOT EVEN THEMSELVES OUT OVER THE SEASON!!!!!! That is a myth that needs dispelling with some PROFESSIONAL statistics. NOT AMATEUR DECISIONS. (Rant over, but I haven't stopped all my life trying to explain this!)
That's a really good point. We get stats on every thing else, why don't we get stats on wrong decisions? All this talk of 'even out' would be proven or disproven. I personally believe it would be disproven in favour of the Manure's and Citeh's of this world but who knows - Opta have missed an obvious one here.
You see how it is Seed? You did it yourself right there..."I personally believe..."!!
There are two considerations: the first is how many points dodgy decisions cost you, and the second is how many more you would have had without them.
Some hard evidence needs collecting, also that poor refereeing decisions could be held ACCOUNTABLE. (Wish) The laziness of "oh it's OK it evens itself out" is just boiilocks (unless you can prove it to me!!)
Yep. Dodgy decisions should be reviewed by the experts at Opta and ruled on. If they can't decide then it isn't a dodgy decision but where it's proven to be wrong that should go in a plus and minus column for each team. If you and I are wrong then fair enough but let's see the statistics to prove it!

Also once the stats are collected they need even deeper analysis. We will get a couple of lucky decisions each year but bet they're not away to Utd or Arsenal.
I've not seen any highlights but I agree 100% about the laziness of the tired and factually inaccurate 'it evens itself out' quote. It never has been true and never will be true, but an independent review panel would be interesting.

Alas, it's flawed because, if a ref knew the season's stats ahead of a game, s/he might be tempted to 'even things up' rather than make what s/he thought was the right decision.
And the politics of FA and the Premiere League will always protect the referees and neither will be keen to publish stats which criticise referees. As clubs wouldn't publish fitness stats on players who are carrying injuries.

Clattenburg made a mistake by not giving a penalty against Shaw in the first half when he tugged Holt's shirt and did commit an infringement. And then he evened it up after appearing to consult a linesman who never gave the penalty in the first place. The linesman probably said he was unsighted. (more politics, possibly by both officials)

You can argue the rights and wrongs of evening things up until the cows come home. As a spectator or a supporter I would say it was morally wrong, or morally right depending on circumstances. If I was an ambitious career referee, I would probably do it because it would be the politic thing to do to protect my career.

As a Saints supporter I thought it was an awful decision. If it had happened 30 minutes earlier it would have been a bad decision but I would have understood why he did it, but we would still have had time to recover and get a goal back. At the point he gave the penalty we clearly didn't have the time to recover.

To wrong a right in the way Clattenburg did, was not right at the time he did it, but it can protect a referees career. Or doom a team to relegation. The referee will always be more interested in his own career than the future of any given club. Especially one outside of the top six where the reportage will have a lower profile and the manger's reaction and influence will be a lot lower. If he had been officiating a top six game his decision may have been different depending on who was at home. (More politics) Life ain't black and white.

The positives were the boost to Boruc's confidence, which is great for us as we face two very tough home games where we need a goalkeeper on top form. And we have a point from Norwich which we wouldn't have had without his penalty save. It could be the point that saves us from relegation. I hope it isn't!

Pochettino apologises for Clattenburg confrontation

Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has apologised for storming onto the pitch to remonstrate with referee Mark Clattenburg after his side were held to a goalless draw at Norwich.

Saints played superbly well in the snow and rain at Carrow Road and should have had the game won before Clattenburg awarded Norwich an injury time penalty for a foul by Luke Shaw on Grant Holt.

Saints disagreed with the decision and saw what they perceived to be justice done as Boruc dived to his right to make the save and preserve the point.

After the game Pochettino came onto the pitch to confront Clattenburg but afterwards was repentant.

He said: “I do know that (you shouldn’t go on the pitch) and I apologise.

“Sometimes you can lose control a little but us managers have to control ourselves.

“Sometimes I feel as if I am playing the game as well on the sidelines.”

He added: “I am happy overall with the team’s performance because we regained that fighting spirit that perhaps we lost a little bit against QPR.

“I think my team played better than last week and in the 90th minute before that penalty was given we deserved to be leading the game.

“So my anger was double fold that it shouldn’t have been a penalty and that we should have been up in the game by that time.”
