FA Cup chaos could impact Saints

The Football Association could consider asking for the Premier League match between Saints and Chelsea later this month to be postponed in order to help resolve the FA Cup’s fixture mess.

Yesterday’s quarter-final draw between Manchester United and Chelsea means that tie must go to a replay, but there is currently no obvious date in the calendar for one to be held.

Much hinges on Chelsea's Europa League encounter with Steaua Bucharest at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.

If Rafael Benitez's men overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit, they would qualify for a quarter-final that would be played in the two midweek slots immediately prior to the confirmed FA Cup semi-final dates of April 13 and 14.

The preceding international break rules out United heading to Chelsea for the right to play Manchester City in the last four any earlier, as it is impractical to cancel Premier League fixtures due to be played this weekend.

It would leave the FA either asking for matches on Easter weekend – United visit Sunderland and Chelsea head to Saints, both for TV fixtures – to be postponed, or those on the following weekend, which would include the Manchester derby.

The FA might be loathe to do that, though, because it merely stacks up a problem for later in the season, with matches from this weekend, and those due to be played when the semi-finals take place, already needing to be re-arranged.

That would force Chelsea into sandwiching the replay at the start of a midweek that also involves a European commitment.

Even that is not straightforward as Fulham are due to entertain QPR on Easter Monday, April 1, and local police are unlikely to sanction a cup tie on the same day.

The following Monday is when United are set to entertain City, although that fixture was set to be pushed back to the previous Saturday had Sir Alex Ferguson's men made it past Real Madrid in the Champions League.

An additional complication is whether Chelsea get drawn to play at home first, or away in the Europa League draw when it is made on Friday.

These complications would disappear if Benitez's men fail to make it past Steaua this week, with the replay then likely to be played during the first week of April, even though UEFA prefers major countries not to arrange domestic fixtures at the same time as their competitions.

How can players that get £100000 a week not be able to play two games in a week and saying that they need a rest is just mad. They do a lot less than most people at work and they don't have "rests" if they want to!!

Why don't they play the replay on Sat 30th March and then play the next day down here. Play full strength team Vs United and then the fringe players Vs us. Sounds absolutely fine to me and i'm sure the people in charge at Villa, Wigan, QPR and Reading will be happy with that

Even if we don't even play that game against Chelsea I reckon we'll get 14 more points and be nice and safe!!

I don't suppose this pile up would partly be the result of the formation of group stages in the European competitions would it? In other words, push domestic competitions to the side so as to maximise the TV opportunities created by European competitions.

It's nothing more than big club and UEFA greed!

Let them take their medicine and, in the course of one week in April, play on Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday. It's why they have (supposedly) assembled a 25-man squad of highly paid, world-class internationals.

Always thought playing this game on Easter Sunday was stupid, bearing in mind alot of people go away for Easter and it is school holidays. Alot of STH who thought they wouldn't be able to attend the game, will now be to go although it will cause problems with friends they have told could have their tickets!!

Firstly, no European match should take precedence over an English league match.

Secondly, we've already been messed about once this season, by having the away match at Chelsea cancelled so they could play in an unimportant, to most people, but very lucrative, to them, world club cup competition.

Thirdly, as both clubs, over the years have treated the FA Cup with disdain, sending out teams consisting of players that aren't even fringe players, why can't they both just put out their under 21 teams for the Cup game, whilst their first team squad honours the league programme, that is the bread and butter game?

Or better still, send their U21 squad down to play us on the agreed day!

Surely Easter has always usually involved Friday/Monday fixtures for all.

Chelsea can play us one of those days and Utd on the other, problem solved.

And they can both still be on TV.

Interesting to think that Saints will be in the same predicament the season after next...
