Pochettino on Reds alert

Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping Saints’ survival hopes are not dented by one of his former players at the weekend.

Liverpool’s visit to St Mary’s on Saturday will see the Brazilian winger, Philippe Coutinho, line-up against his old boss.

The 20-year-old played under Pochettino at Espanyol last season, during a loan spell from Inter Milan.

Coutinho is now at Liverpool, after an £8.5m move to Anfield from the Italian side in January, while Pochettino has landed in Southampton.

The possibility had existed that both men could have ended up at St Mary’s, with Saints also having been interested in signing the player during the last transfer window.

But, rather than helping the club’s bid for survival, Coutinho could instead now harm it.

With just one point from their last three matches, Pochettino’s side are still very much embroiled in the relegation fight.

They will go into the weekend with a four-point cushion over the bottom three, although Wigan, in 18th place, now have a game in hand on them.

Defeat to a resurgent Liverpool could push Saints even closer to the drop zone.

Coutinho’s arrival at Anfield has certainly coincided with an impressive upturn in fortunes for the Merseyside club.

The skilled attacking player has started in Liverpool’s last three games, which have all ended in victory and have yielded 12 goals for Brendan Rodgers’ team.

That has sparked hope of the Reds securing a European spot that, just a few weeks ago, had looked unlikely.

Liverpool and Saints legend Jimmy Case has watched Coutinho closely since his arrival from Inter and has been impressed with what he has seen so far.

“He’s feeling his way in, but you can see he’s got quite a bit of skill there,” he said.

“His fitness levels are probably not at their best at the moment, and he does not have a massive physique.

“But he is very gifted technically. Some of the balls he played through on Sunday (in the 3-2 win against Tottenham), some of them with the outside of his foot, were a joy to watch.

“He does look a decent player.”

Pochettino is well aware of the ability of his fellow South American, who opened his goal account for Liverpool in the 5-0 win against Swansea last month.

Coutinho joined Espanyol in January 2012 and scored five goals in 16 appearances to help ensure the Barcelona-based team, then coached by Pochettino, survived in La Liga.

He was heavily linked with a move to St Mary’s in January, with Saints’ Argentinean boss confirming after he took over the side that there had been a “small chance” of signing the youngster.

Liverpool always represented the most likely destination, however, and Pochettino insisted at the time that he wasn’t upset at Saints missing out on him.

“I am not frustrated about not being able to sign him,” he said in his initial press conference as the club’s manager. “I knew there was a small chance he would come here, but overall I have not had much time to consider new signings.”

Pochettino added: “We all know who Coutinho is, and that he is a quality player.”

Just our luck to come up against them when they in a rich vein of form, we just have to hope that MoPo get's his team selection correct and that all of the players turn up and give 100%, we are not expected to get a result, but Saints never do what you expect them to. Any result will be a bonus. Phil Dowd is the Referee and will have his work cut out, I wish him well.

It should be a great game of football, but our defence will need to be on top form marking Suarez and Cork and Schneiderlin will need to do well to rip up their midfield.
Lineup (4-2-3-1): Boruc, Clyne, Fonte, Forren, Shaw, Cork, Schneiderlin, Ramirez, Lallana, Puncheon, Lambert.

I would replace Lallana with Jay Rod in your team TheSaintsMan and probably Yosh for Forren.

For me the captain isn't bringing anything to the team possibly still carrying the injury which he picked up

9 cup finals left, 3/6 will go down, we must get something from this game, fans must be 100% behind the team for 90+ minutes.

Unfortunately I know a few 'Liverpool' supporters who live in and around Southampton yet have never been to Anfield. They all seem to think they just have to turn up on Saturday to win it will be so good to beat them like we have done on plenty of occasions in the past down here. Like has been mentioned elsewhere play on Carragher also I don't think there full backs are that great defensively either. If we play like I know we can there's no reason why we won't get anything from the game

Oh no, a scenario where our superhero generalissimo Mauricio Pochettino faces virtuoso dynamo Coutinho.

The audio on my stereo radio says the duo will be incommunicado unless Coutinho turns desperado and his psycho ego causes aggro with our physio and the trio domino into a latino fiasco at the crescendo.

Saints, Two - L'pool, Zero. Bingo!

Some very interesting choices here. I for one would go with pace. Clyne and Shaw at full back with Fonte and Forren (yes Forren) at centre back. I reckon there skill should sort out the 'thing'

Up front - pace again Punch Jay and Gaston. Adam and Maka on the bench.

Boruc Clyne Shaw Fonte Forren Spider Cork Jay Punch Gaston SRL
Davis Yos Fox JWP Davis Adam Maka

2-1 to the Saints SRL and Jay

The good news is that I've heard the Liverpool players are downhearted after a photo session yesterday.

The popular magazine "Raunchy Women's Football Monthly" is running a "Top willy in the Prem" competition and picked the coldest day of the year to go to Anfield. It was minus 8 in the wind chill on Merseyside and even 'Big Boy' Suarez's display looked like a mini chipolata on a plate with two peas.

The mag visited us back on a nice day in September and Hooi was said to look more like a big salami with two baked spuds.

Of course I'm not saying that size is everything, but confidence matters. I am doing everything possible to have the Suarez and Hooi pictures pinned on the Liverpool dressing room wall. It'll look like no contest.

Plenty of training required by the boys this week in the art of being clinical in front of goal.
Wigan were at Everton in the cup, very impressive, take note Adam.

It's all a bit academic. We can't be counting on getting any points from Liverpool (nor Chelsea and Spurs) - although if we do (like against City) it's a bonus. We have to concentrate on beating Reading for sure and either Sunderland or Stoke (or both). Then anything we can scrape against WH, Swansea and WBA would be the icing.

Another 9 points - it's going to be tight and may come down to goal difference on the last day - which is our trump card thankfully!

I think that 7-9 points will come from from Swansea, West Brom and Stoke. Tough games but if we show desire we can achieve that.

Re L'pool: As long as they don't get an early goal we can do a job on them. It will probably take Boruc to have a good game but we have enough down the wings and in midfield to get something

I hope you're right. But, looking at our performances and results so far this season 7-9 pts from Swansea, Stoke and WBA is pretty unlikely - more like 3-4 pts.

Every game as St Marys we play we are capable of 3 points, never write any off before they have begun. The thing to be wary of from those around us that happens every year in the twilight part of the season is the random result factor. Teams fighting for their lives turn over top of the table teams or teams with little to play for, check out Wigan results at the end of last season.

They will know how well we played against Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, Everton and Man City.
We are also in our back yard so we have a big game to play as the 12th man.

New tactic - let Liverpool win anyway so they can get into Europe in fifth place, we get fair play league place in UEFA Cup and still stay up. Everyone's a winner :)

Seriously though, this is going to be incredibly tough. I'd be playing the same team we did against Man City in order to try to starve service to their attacking players.

Have to be very concerned though that Suarez and Sturridge with pace and guile coupled with Gerrard's ability to pick out 40 yard passes from deep may be the worst possible combination for our pressing game.

On our day though, you never know.

Chelsea on the other hand have a game less suited to that 'hoof it long use your pace' style, so I think we have a better chance there.

Winchester Saint says...

I don't think MP can try harder to think on how to beat Liverpool, after all Liverpool is still unbeaten in all but one match since New Year's Day.

They have some of the best players including Suarez, Gerrard and even Coutinho and nearly all team closer to the drop zone fallen victims to the Kops.

Gerrard warned that Liverpool need a perfect finish and wants to finish in the top five.

Liverpool remain favourites to beat us according to the bookies. Suarez can find our weak spot and always go through defenders to score goals and also can poach goals too. He can kick long into the goal like most Spanish players do.

Gerrard's favourite is long ball to the net which most goals scored by him is through that way.

It seems Saints might have no chance of stopping Liverpool's rot or do we?

To be fair if we don't get points against these three when they are looking to their holidays we don't deserve to stay up. For me though it is West Ham, Stoke, Sunderland and Reading that are the main targets for me - all lack pace and guile.

When you look at those fixtures though, and the ones already mentioned, picking up 12 points looks far from impossible. And I think we'll get at least one surprise result to add to that as well.

If we are talking about a further 9 pts for safety (and I would love someone to convince me of that) 9 pts to add to the 6 MP has already collected for a total of 15pts from 16 games is a pretty poor return in my book. Whether we end up staying up or not Cortese's brinkmanship smacks of recklessness - NA was on target for 41pts if he matched the average of his last 16 games in charge, easily avoiding relegation.

How many did we get against City?

And, out of interest, is that the same toothless attack that has scored more goals than all but one of the teams in the bottom half of the table, and only one fewer than Newcastle, Swansea and WBA?

Your point about us conceding at least two goals is fair though, granted - only three teams have conceded more.

That's why I think he will deploy three pressing midfielders, as he did against Man City, on Saturday.

Our biggest hope is that Liverpool come here over confident, expecting an easy day. It's hard to break out of that mentality if we get on top of them from the kick off.

And I've got a feeling that either Rickie, Adam or Ramirez are going to start converting class into goals very soon.

OK - that would be a point a game over the whole season so a projected 38 pts at the end - one more than most people on this thread are predicting. The prospect of that being the difference at the end (and even worse, the difference between us and QPR) keeps me awake at night.

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ohh
You may say I’m a dreamer
But it’s been a ticking bomb
There were two clubs on the south coast
Very soon they’ll just be one

Imagine no possessions
I’m pretty sure you can
No need for Guy or ‘Arry
But where the f*ck’s Milan?
Imagine poor John Westwood
Sitting on his bell

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
You may say I’m a dreamer
But it’s been a ticking bomb
There were two clubs on the south coast
Very soon they’ll just be one

Imagine there's no pompey
It's easy if you try
No skates below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all our posters
Living for today...

Imagine there's no Tebourba
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no Scooter too
Imagine all our posters
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the Echo will be as one

Imagine there’s no fratton
I wonder if you can
No more greed and corruption
A brotherhood of fan
Imagine all our posters
Sharing all the sites...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the Echo will live as one

I would replace Lallana with Jay Rod in your team TheSaintsMan and probably Yosh for Forren.

For me the captain isn't bringing anything to the team possibly still carrying the injury which he picked up
I see your point about Lallana, he should not be captain as it distracts him from his own form to much, captain should be Fonte.
I have to disagree with you picking Maya over Forren though, because I think Forren is a better player and Maya is quite inconsistent, and if he does not turn up on Saturday then the Liverpool attack will be all over him.
Forren hasn't played for Saints yet so how do you know? He has not played because he was crocked when we bought him. 5 cleans sheets all season any half decent centre half would get a game for Saints right now because all our options are poor. It beggars belief that we have allowed this to persist for a whole season and put our premiership status in jeopardy but the Chairman failed the football club with the priorities in his decision making in January.

I think Saints looked stronger with Davis instead of Ramirez and I'd have Rod in there for Lallana and save them for the 2nd half. Yoshida has been our best centreback and doesn't deserve to be dropped. It doesn't help having new players at the back so I'd keep Fonte with Yosh. The rest is nailed on.

It will be tough but they can have an off day and we need to start taking our chances!

Precisely - a complete pansy and a hopeless waste of money. Cortese's decision. Get Davis back in the midfield for the Liverpool game.
wrong nigel adkins decision and maybe one of the reasons he was sacked.maurico wanted forren and we signed one player.all players chosen by the manager .and nigel lets be fair was given more cash to spend than anyother manager in saints history .but wasted the cash 12 gaston 7 for jay .when had he got some defenders with the cash kept sharp who he paid big money for .we would be further up the table .clearly if he was going to sack him,he should of after 10 games .mp will choose the players will be backed again ,but buy the wrong ones and we dont get results and your lose your job .its not rocket science

Cortese used his Italian connections to lure Ramirez - Adkins went along with it as virtually a done deal; everyone knows that. But I agree Adkins wasted big money on substandard players JRod included who was supposed to be banging in goals but can't hit a barn door from 12 yds and now plays as a virtual left winger. I am not a defender of Adkins; I question Cortese's judgement and this is where you are wrong again: Cortese wanted rid of Adkins at the end of last season for failing to win the Championship but he stalled. Then he acted after Adkins had got us back on track presumably because MP became available. This was a massive reckless gamble to my mind as is born out by the fact that under Adkins we were on track to get 40 pts (easily enough) and under MP we are looking at 37 (might not be enough).

mp had been out of work since the last november when he was sacked ,that you have got wrong .but nigel went on the media before and said he wanted gaston .i do agree if he was going to sack him he should of done earlier.not before a transfer window .nobody would of complained the media was pusing it .to be fair he could of done but gave him more time .but he started making daft decisions leaving lambert on the bench daft sub decisions .well mp is still on a point a game 8 out of 9 but still adjusting to mps way of playing but if lallana remains fit that wiil be the difference to the team it always is losing cork would be a massive blow .nothing is gauranteed

I think i'd like to see Davis and Cork holding midfield, with Morgan more forward and central, Adam, Rickie and Punch up front.
This is not the game to go all-out attack when you have Suarez and Sturridge facing you.
I'm sure we'd all be happy with a point
