Saints On This Day - March 12 1949: Saints 2 Leeds 1 Saints made it five wins from six Second Division games as they comfortably saw off Leeds despite Eric Webber scoring an own goal with 12 minutes left.

Saints had taken the lead in the 33rd minute as Eric Day crashed in a fine effort.

Charlie Wayman doubled the advantage as Saints moved to the top of the table.

1955: Saints 3 Exeter 0 Saints produced a fine second half display as they trounced Exeter at The Dell to remain in third in Division 3 (South). Tommy Mulgrew scored twice and John Hoskins once as Saints extended their unbeaten run to nine games.

1960: Coventry 4 Saints 1 Saints suffered their second heavy defeat in a week as they followed up a 5-1 loss against Newport County with another poor Division 3 (South) display against Coventry.

Dave Scurr made his first League appearance for the Saints as he replaced Tommy Traynor at full back, the first change in that position since August 1959.

Derek Reeves had headed Saints in front.

1966: Wolves 1 Saints 1 Defender David Webb scored an outrageous overhead kick on his debut as Saints shared the spoils with Wolves.

Webb scored an outstanding goal in the 50th minute to give the Saints the lead although couldn’t hold onto all three points as Wolves crashed home a leveller ten minutes later through Ernie Hunt.

This draw was the first game in a run that would see Saints go the remainder of the season unbeaten (11 games) as they finished second in the Division Two table, winning promotion to the top flight for the first time.

1988: Saints 1 Coventry 2 Saints were left to rue a Colin Clarke missed penalty as they threw away the lead at The Dell.

Danny Wallace had put Saints in front after Clarke fluffed his spot-kick, only for Coventry to hit back, as they had done 28 years earlier to the day, though David Smith and Brian Kilcline.

1994: Saints 1 Sheffield Wednesday Saints earned a scrappy point against mid-table Sheffield Wednesday as they continued to battle against Premier League relegation.

The Owls went in front with 25 minutes left through Chris Bart-Williams, before Ken Monkou headed in a Matt Le Tissier free-kick with 13 minutes left.

1997: Leeds 0 Saints 0 Michael Evans made his debut from the bench in an otherwise unspectacular 0-0 draw at Elland Road. Saints had been struggling and went into this fixture 19th in the Premier League table.

2005: Saints 0 Manchester United 4 Saints’ hopes of reaching the FA Cup semi-final were quickly dashed as Roy Keane netted within two minutes.

Another effort from Cristiano Ronaldo and two goals from midfielder Paul Scholes saw Harry Redknapp’s men end up well beaten.

2011: Bournemouth 1 Saints 3 Saints came from behind to make it three League 1 wins on the bounce as they beat Bournemouth at Dean Court.

Lee Barnard levelled on 11 minutes after Lauri Dalla Valle had put the Cherries ahead.

That was how it stayed until the 71st minute when Dean Hammond rifled in a fine effort to put Nigel Adkins’ in front.

Rickie Lambert added a third in the closing stages, with Saints midfielder Oscar Gobern red carded in the final minute.
