Saints players surround referee Mark Clattenburg at Carrow Road Saints players surround referee Mark Clattenburg at Carrow Road

Saints have been charged by the Football Association for their behaviour towards referee Mark Clattenburg at Norwich City on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino's players surrounded Clattenburg when he awarded a controversial penalty at the end of the goalless draw at Carrow Road.

Saints have been charged with "a failure to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderley fashion" and have until 4pm on Friday, March 15 to respond.

I've not got a problem with this. In my opinion it shows how much it meant to them. I think the feeling of injustice will spur us on, on Saturday.

I've also got a problem with this, teams like Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea etc... do this most weeks and get nothin for it! FA need to decide on a rule and make EVERY team abide by it not just the 1's that don't mean so much to them financially via competition wins!

So what? FA fines are no deterrent to footballers or clubs anymore. There fines represent back pocket change to most clubs and players.

I don't like to see it either, agreed, but to me the one positive is that it demonstrates how much it means to the players. They will have been buoyed by watching MoPo marching on to have it out with Clattenburg too.

To be honest I don't respect the FA at all for this action. The FA need to be honest with themselves and be MUCH more critical of referee's. Yes we were wrong to do our protest so publically but refs believe they are untouchable so every so often it does them no harm at all if they receive a verbal volley around poor decisions as long as it never goes beyond a verbal tirade. Clattenberg deserves taking down a peg or two in my opinion

If the linesman had seen something he would have flagged, but he didn't.
Clattenburg talking to him just emphasises that he didn't have the courage to take full responsibility for his own actions.
It also shows that he doubted his own decision, and no ref should blow for a free kick or penalty, unless 100% sure of what he has seen.
I've still not seen an angle that proves conclusively that there was a foul.

Saints have until the 15th to respond. It strikes me that if we can get Sir Alex Ferguson to do the response for us we'll be cleared of all charges.

I really couldn't care less about Europe next year. In fact. I honestly don'wat Saints in Europe next year.

Firstly: Lets worry about this season and avoiding the drop.
Next will be about consolidating our position in the Premier league.

After that we can start to think about winning some silverware.
Let's get safe in the Premier League first.

Sorry but remember this ref ain't going away & when he refs you again do you think he'll forget this matter?
accept his decision get on with the game & many times you'll be surprised how his decisions start to favour you over the opposition as you've shown the ref respect
COME ON WALES.
England started with players who normally sit on the bench thinking Italy would be a walk over it nearly backfired on them.
Wales went over with a full squad well Farrels back so's the players who were rested so come on Wales let's see what you've got?

It's ok for Rio Ferdinand to sarcastically clap in the ref's face and Chelsea, City and United players to throw hissy fits when the spoilt sods don't get their own way but but if Saints complain in a much more controlled manner, that's FA charges. That makes sense. Joke of an FA and their "big club" double standards!!

We have started to slide down the various published Fair Play Tables, so I guess showing more passion is going to cost us any chance of any Euro involvement, now if any of this extra aggression sees us survive the Premier I will live with it for now, but I do not approve of confronting Officials, because it is simply a waste of time, better to put the energy into the winning of matches than upsetting Referees.

As a 'small club' we are a soft target for the febrile FA. Ferguson and his lot get away scot-free because Man Utd is a 'big club' and the FA are afraid to upset the big clubs especially one led by a brute.

If only the players could remain as calm as the fans!!!! Honestly do we really expect them to just say "Oh well he got that one wrong and it mite cost us relegation" Emotions are bound to run high on these occasions and the adrenaline rush must be through the roof . I would say that reaction would have been the same in any other Prem. game under similar circumstances. Anyway I see the Skunts are back to normal form. It seems that if the fifth choice striker we let them have doesn't score they don't get the results. We do like to help our tiny south coast neighbours out though. After all think of the HUGE amount of entertainment they provide for us every week. And still lots more to come.

I don't know what we were moaning about the penalty was saved and lets be honest Norwich should have had a penalty before that this club is turning into a joke. one win out of seven and that was thanks to Joe Hart going to be fined by the FA and heading for the Championship and sacked the best manager we have had for years.Am I fed up? to true I am

I just hope we don't have this incompetent excuse of a referee at any of our remaining games. He really does think everyone that pays their money to attend the game is just there to watch him.

On the matter in hand as others have mentioned its disgraceful that other clubs get away with it whilst we have to suffer this.

So has anyone got an address we can write to so that we can protest the inequality of treatment, and also charge the FA with employing useless referees who drag the game down. (Why did he consult the assistant referee if he was 100% certain?)

The reason we are being charged is because Clattenburg has been a git to further punish Saints and put it in his match report and the FA have to investigate it; it was never a penalty and he knows it and why he went and discussed it with the linesman who clearly didn't think it was a penalty because he did not raise his flag is a mystery. Clattenburg is so full of self importance and doesn't like to be wrong, he couldn't gift the game to Norwich so he's making Saints pay in another way!

Why is Joe Hart going to be fined? If you were a happy clapper you would have got over this by now. Positive thinking or you must walk away, your choice, you cannot change anything, so just for now get behind the Club until the end of this season, then have a rethink.

I don't know if anyone heard what Pique said about the Barca game last night something along the lines of if people who have a ticket but don't want to get behind the team shouldn't show up and should give there ticket to somebody else. That kinda goes for us at the moment a lot of people are still depressed about the QPR result nearly 2 weeks ago get over it and get behind the team on Saturday. There is no reason why we can't pick up points from the next 2 games even though they are 2 strong teams we face

For what it's worth, here's what I think.
1. Why did Clattenburg give the pen? He thought it was a foul - he was wrong! Just as he was wrong (IMO) not to award Norwich one earlier and, according to others, wrong not to award one or two to us.
2. Why did he consult the lino? I wonder if he wanted to check if it was inside or outside the box. Commendable if so. Did the lino have a different opinion? Well, he didn't raise his flag, so I guess so. He also had a far better view, so could have been asked to make the decision, which I'm sure would have been different.

Anyway, that's accademic, he made (another) mistake and we nearly paid for it. If he really did get 3 (or even 4) penalty decisions wrong then the FA should look into it.

All that aside, should the players and Poch have acted as they did? No and the FA should charge the club. The important point is will the club offer a defence and what, in the end, will be the punishment?

For me, there are plenty of mitigating circumstances:
1. If the club can compile all the pens given and not given at either end throughout this season, it would make for interesting viewing. Eventually, players are going to feel cheated and react.
2. The players' and manager's behaviour to date. First offence and all that.
3. No.2, coupled with a commitment from the club to 'act more properly' in future

This should mean that the FA punishment is no more than a rap on the knuckles.

However, should the FA decide to inflict a heavier punishment, the club should remind them how they responded to Rio's sarcastic hand clapping. That was, in my opinion, far worse because it didn't seek to engage the ref, he just sought to show his contempt.

In some ways, it would be no bad thing if the FA gave a heavy penalty. Then, when other clubs get away with similar or worse, we could offer the FA some advice as to how to be a tad more consistent.

I'd love to see a union of smaller clubs take on the FA and the big-club clique. It's they, not clubs like ours, which are ruining our game.

I'm wondering... alot of people are quoting Rio's slow hand clap.

However... That was in a champions league match (correct me if I'm wrong on that). So wouldn't the FA just mumble something like 'Oh well that was in a match not governed by us' or some other legal claptrap?

this is all rubbish. FA clearly feel there is a case to answer. No one else does. anyone know what sanctions they can impose?

Really... We've been 2nd in the fair play league all season? What annoys me is the fact, Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea and Man Utd do this every game? We do it once and get told off for it? Consistency??
