Southampton v Chelsea match rearranged due to FA Cup clash

Chelsea match rearranged Chelsea match rearranged

Saints have expressed their frustration at having their home match against Chelsea moved back to its original date of Saturday, March 30.

The clubs had been due to meet in a televised Premier League fixture on Sunday, March 31, but have seen the game rearranged because of the FA Cup fixture mess.

Chelsea and Manchester United face a quarter-final replay in that competition, after last weekend's 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, but had no obvious dates in which to play it, due to international fixtures and the Blues' Europa League involvement.

To resolve the pile-up, it has been agreed that the cup tie will be held on Monday, April 1, meaning the encounter between Saints and Chelsea has been bumped from the Sunday back to the Saturday, with a 3pm kick-off.

Saints have made it clear they are unhappy with the decision.

"The game had already been moved once for the purposes of live Sky TV coverage – to Sunday 31st March – however, the Premier League have deemed it acceptable to move the fixture once more," the club said in a statement on their website.

They added: "The club is extremely disappointed that this decision has been taken; not least because of the significant inconvenience a second change to the fixture will cause our supporters. Due to the move, this match will now not be broadcast live on TV."

I thought the same ...... fat chance!

Anyone know if Chelsea have responded? Knowing something had to be changed, I wonder whether or not they are unhappy about it being changed in this way?

This decision is good for Saints in my opinion. Loss of one slice of TV money a small price to pay. Always better to play early and put pressure on other teams anyway, but the biggest advantage is that Chelsea will play a weaker team.

My only concern is that we have to realise 100% that a weakened team still equates to a very, very good side that should, on paper still beat us. We'll still need to play out of our skins, but this is a nice situation.

Had it been properly postponed I think we'd be at a real disadvantage.

Yeah, that's Nigel's pay off gone then and Benali's going to be stuck with that luxury flooring. Feck it.

The club might be unhappy about the change but I bet most of the supporters are happy. Its time the club thought more about the supporters, don't they realize how difficult it is to get to matches we have to leave hours before kick off and get home hours after and when it's on a sunday or evening it's even worse

I'm kind of in the same boat as you - I was going to get out of spending Sunday with the inlaws by being 200 miles away. Now I'm going to have to miss the bloody game as I can't go on the Saturday AND spend Sunday with the inlaws.

I thought it was impossible to hate Chelsea more than I already did, but no - it turns out it wasn't.

I was already going to be with the in-laws that w/e, so had no hope of being at the match either way.

The big downer for me is that we'll be 'en route' when the match kicks off, so I'll be scrambling to reach the in-laws at best in time for the second half.

The good news, though, is that the in-laws are in Portugal, so at least I should get a bit of warmth and sun - and a fair splattering of holy water when the local priest stops by to bless the house for Easter. Never a dull moment in Portugal!

Unlucky mate, I am in a different boat because I was going to have to miss the game to see my in-laws on Sunday, now as it is on Saturday I can see the game as I have a ticket, and even better they have decided they are going up to Newcastle to see their friends on Sunday now. I have no problems there!

Why are people assuming that Chelsea will field a weakened team against us?

They still need to pile up the points to ensure a Champions League place, which is more prestigious and more financially rewarding than a Europa Cup place.

I think they will be at full strength with a view to running riot in the first half, as in our cup game, then rest players 2nd half.
