Saints should not lose out over fixture farce

Rafa Benitez Rafa Benitez

Saints should not lose out financially, despite having this month’s home match against Chelsea rearranged and taken off television.

The club have criticised the decision to reschedule the game in order to help resolve the fixture chaos enveloping the FA Cup.

Saints had been due to face the Blues, at St Mary’s, on Sunday, March 31, with Sky broadcasting the game live.

However, they will now have to play the match a day earlier, after the Premier League approved changing it back to its original date.

That is to allow the FA Cup quarter-final replay between Chelsea and Manchester United to take place on Monday, April 1.

There had been concern about when that match would take place, as there was no obvious slot in the calendar for it.

However, it has now been shoehorned in on Easter Monday, resulting in disruption for Saints.

With the visit of Rafa Benitez’s team now taking place on Saturday, March 30, at 3pm, the game will no longer be televised.

That is not likely to impact the club financially in the long run, however.

Saints had been due to receive a facility fee for the match – a sum, worth roughly £500,000, paid to each club that features in a game that is broadcast live on TV.

They will indeed no longer be given this for the Chelsea fixture.

However, each Premier League club must receive at least ten of these payments per season, irrespective of how many times they are actually shown on television.

Saints have so far had seven of their league matches broadcast live this term.

Chelsea was due to be number eight, with the trip to Reading next month set to be the ninth.

All the broadcast schedules have already been confirmed up to the end of April, leaving only Saints’ final three matches that could also have been selected for TV coverage.

Although not impossible, it is unlikely that Saints would have appeared on TV more than ten times this season, even if the Chelsea game had been shown.

Should they only receive one more televised fixture beyond the Reading game, or indeed none, they will still be paid the full ten facility fees.

Saints made it clear they were unhappy with the disruption, though.

“The game had already been moved once for the purposes of live Sky TV coverage – to Sunday 31st March – however, the Premier League have deemed it acceptable to move the fixture once more,” the club said in a statement on their website.

They added: “The club is extremely disappointed that this decision has been taken; not least because of the significant inconvenience a second change to the fixture will cause our supporters.”

Yippee!
Couldn't care which day it gets played.
All my friends and family that didn't want tickets because they would watch it at home, ha!
They will now have to go and watch it at the Swan!
At least the game has been moved for football, not for the convenience of TV.
What match will they show instead?
Will Sky ask for compensation?
Will those errant men who had explained why they couldn't "do" Easter Sunday have to field new excuses?
Or will the celebratory hangover be enough?

That is good to know. Thank you Daily Echo...you receive plenty of abuse on here, the vast majority of which is undeserved. But this is useful information of which most of us were not aware.

So we are OK financially, and our schedule is back to a Saturday which suits me and probably suits the players too.

Indeed, it's good to know that the first thing I've learned today is not only useful but was provided by my local newspaper. Cheers Gordon :-)

Good, the club gets the money - but on the downside fewer fans will get to see the game which seems a tad unfair.

This will only encourage the Labour Party to pursue their policy of putting all the clubs under public ownership in the new National Football Service. They think it is too important to be left in the brutal hands of the capitalists.

Of course it is well meant and matches will be free at the point of entry, but I suspect we'll pay in the end via our taxes as 247,500 administrators will work under the new Minister for Football and all the players will be unionised and fully pensionable at age 27.

The proposal to redistribute goals from winners to losers will also cause players to become lazy in my opinion and by ensuring that all the teams finish up equal top it will be less entertaining than under the current competitive free market, albeit with the unfortunate side-effect of creating 'losers'.

I told my local Labour man, who advocates a "From each according to his abilities - to each according to his needs" policy, that he won't get elected in Southampton because voters will realise that all our largess will go straight down the road to Poopey.

Well there might be a few stumbling blocks to that. The main one being that he would actually want to be paid! And then of course he's used to working with big name footballers. And as he's getting used to taking the blame for everything at Chelski it's a bit unfair to ask him to get performances out of Blue Square Prem standard players. Mite do OK when they are actually in that league though.

this same poitical group are causing uproar in pompey, where they're rigoruosly pursuing a "spare seat tax"
this of course is causing mayhem,
especially in the fratton area.a club spokesman said "we're seriously considering ripping out and selling every other seat" this could make few quid as most are unused and look brand new.

Another example of how the big clubs are looked after by the FA while the little clubs are trampled all over.

Not too bothered about which day it is played, but I would prefer 3pm on a Saturday, being a bit of a traditionalist.

As long as we're in the Prem, & not having to abandon our little team as they slip into League 2 or even oblivion & end up supporting the Ladies team.

How embarrassing would that be?

If I was that desperate I wouldn't mention it to anyone though!

As the only mid week dates "available" are allocated to the next round of the Europa Cup, would it not be somewhat ironic if Chelsea were to fail to beat Steaua tonight, thus leaving 2 midweeks free for the FA Cup replay?

If I were the Steaua manager, I'd be using this presumption that Chelsea will win, to wind his team up for the game tonight.

In all honesty, I don't see why the FA couldn't wait until after tonight's Europa game, before making this decision.

I would love a 3pm kick off on Saturday cos Sunday at 4pm is not good for me as I would be travelling by bus in Winchester where I live in and the bus home would stop after 5pm. However the change saved me a taxi fare home.

Thanks very much FA.
