Adkins bookies' favourite for Reading

Nigel Adkins has emerged as the bookmakers' latest favourite to take over as manager of Reading.

The Premier League strugglers fired Brian McDermott earlier this week and are now on the hunt for a new boss.

Paolo Di Canio, who recently left Swindon, has been strongly tipped for the job, while Brighton's Gus Poyet and Bradford's Phil Parkinson have also been mentioned.

But Adkins, who was relieved of his duties at Saints in January, is the current bookies' favourite.

As i understand it, Adkins is on garden leave and is therefore still being paid by Saints meaning he can't apply for another job until he is off the payroll?

Or is that a load of tosh?

I read that because he is taking SFC to a tribunal then he is now free to find another job

He is free to find another job because he was sacked by the club, which automatically means that while he is paid by them he can get another job, however because it is going to a tribunal this may be upheld.

Nigel deserves a better club than Reading.
I hope he waits for the right club.

no because he agreed to be paid off with monthly payments .he has to take a payooff before he can work .hence the tribunal

Reading are said to be considering an approach for Poyet, that's a marriage made in heaven, and how popular would that be at the Falmer Stadium, just when they are threatening to get into the Play-offs.

From the Telegraph:

Adkins will face Cortese, the Southampton executive chairman, in court this summer after failing to reach an agreement over the terms of his exit, following his controversial dismissal in January.

The 48 year-old guided Southampton from League One to the top flight with successive promotions but was sacked with the club three points clear of the relegation zone.

Adkins, who is being represented by the League Managers’ Association, attempted to settle the dispute with Cortese amicably but has been unable to finalise his pay-off and is now taking legal action over what he believes to be a breach of contract.

Adkins is free to work again now the process has started and is understood to be keen on making a swift return to management.

Huddersfield Town were interested in speaking to him earlier this year after the sacking of Simon Grayson but Adkins was still negotiating with his old club and was effectively on gardening leave. But he has been cleared to return and could be in the frame to take over at Reading, who parted company with Brian McDermott on Monday.

Brian McDermott achieved more at Reading than adkins did at saints he actually won something! How is reading not good enough for him? It's a perfect club for him, do you expect him to take over from Fergus the great?
