I recently had a phone survey from Wandsworth Council whose evident purpose was to allow me to say how much my life is blighted and ruined by aeroplane noise.
It did not offer an option for “general comments” – so here are mine. I live by Wandsworth Common, just a few roads away from being directly under one of the main flight paths into Heathrow. I get more noise from trains crossing the Common at night than from planes – and I don’t mind. I live in a big city.
I expect the noise of movement, life and activity around me. I even find it pleasant to see the planes drifting down on a summer evening.
If the council want to remove a “blight” from Wandsworth, they should do something about the one-way system in its centre – which is a blight on the whole of south London, let alone just Wandsworth.
And if they wanted to do something about the tranquillity of the domestic scene, they should further restrict the endless rebuilding of our streets.
