Hooiveld: Emotions at Norwich ran too high

Jos Hooiveld Jos Hooiveld

Defender Jos Hooiveld accepts the Saints players lost their heads after Norwich were awarded a penalty in last weekend's Premier League clash between the sides.

The Football Association have charged the club with failing to control their players after referee Mark Clattenburg ruled that Luke Shaw fouled Grant Holt just inside the penalty area.

Artur Boruc kept out Holt’s subsequent spot-kick, but Saints’ players continued to protest after the final whistle in the 0-0 draw and were joined on the pitch by manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The club have until 4pm tomorrow to respond to the charge.

''If people cross the line, then of course you have to be charged, but I think at that moment we were fighting to keep that clean sheet,'' Hooiveld said.

''We had fought the whole of what was a tough game and tough circumstances, then they were awarded a penalty which in our eyes was not the right decision.

''Then the emotions went a little bit high and maybe we got a little too close. I think whatever happens after that, it is not up to us to decide.''

Asked if Southampton had been out of order, Hooiveld added: ''Not really. I think it is also in the moment in which it happened and how it happened.

''Football is a game of emotions and of course it has to be directed in the right way.

''But sometimes if you feel you have been done an injustice as a football player you lose your head a little bit.

''I think that's what happened and what is going to happen, I don't really know.''

I don't think this sort of behaviour would have happened under Nigel but what gets me is what our manager was saying to the ref?!
As we are told he can't speak any English was it a tirade of Spanish swearwords?!

And Rio Ferdinand clapping in the face of the referee is going unpunished. When are the incompetent FA officials going to realise that it is diabolical, ludicrous and totally incompetent decisions which cause these flare ups in the first place. How often do we see a player being effectively attacked and then getting sent of for a minor retaliation. This reaction by the team was totally justifiable and is the only way some of the prima donna refs. like Twattenberg might just understand that they have got it completely wrong.

To be honest, my first reaction to seeing MoPo go onto the pitch was "Go on son!". I've calmed down a bit and since then my reaction is "Go on son!".

He wasn't in the ref's face about it - he seemed very controlled in the circumstances. But I'm pleased we've got a real competitor with genuine passion running the show. If that rubs off on the players then so much the better. He'll probably get a touchline ban but it's not the end of the world.

Well that's us, that is. People want us to be a nice little club that rolls over and lets things slide and is pathetically grateful just to be in the Premiership because that's the convenient media cliche of how teams like us are meant to be. But we're not like that at all. We have ambition and we have teeth. Don't let our vaguely West Country accents fool you into thinking we're just here for sh1ts and giggles. this incident could be defined as 'rowdy' or 'poor disciplined', the actions of the players were not 'disgusting' as you put it. But then I don't know why I would be expecting a balanced and fair opinion from a supporter of the little club down the road.

I will say it again for the millionth time:
Funny how when Man Utd do that nothing happens, but when we do something (and it wasn't even aggressive, it was controlled!) we get reprimanded for it. It is the FA (again) trying to please the big clubs and ignore the 'little' ones. It is a shame how football is run so politically sometimes.

Althought I am not in favour of the ref being challenged in that way.
It goes to prove how committed our players are becoming under the new management.
I admired Nigel and his tollerance and was shocked when he was given the heave-ho but Nigel, bless him, would probably have fined his players and then tried to find the possitives in the issue.
Pochettino rightly though was horrified at the carp decision that this consistently poor ref made.
I listened to the game on Solent and sighed when I heard the refs name before the match.
I also heard the total disbelief of the 2 commentators at his penalty decision.
We cant all be wrong about him,can we?
If it wasn't for that brilliant save by Boruk he could have changed the whole of our season in that moment.
COYS

I make no excuse for repeating this post.
Like a number of previous posters on here I am excited by the potential future of our football club.

Small provincial club?

We may have been!
Not now, we are where we should always have been.
Lets prove this to all and sundry tommorow, once again.
Lets make the ground bounce with noise.
Lets show the bias media, the bias FA,the likes of the so called big clubs,i.e.the Liverpools, the Manchesters, the Arsenals of this world.
WE WONT BE MARCHED OVER!

To all the negs.

Saints are here to stay.

GET USED TO IT!
