Pochettino: We didn't allow Liverpool to play

Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino hailed Saints’ “brave” performance in their 3-1 victory over Liverpool.

Saints dominated the Reds for the vast majority of the game and ran out deserved winners in front of a record St Mary’s crowd.

The result helped push Saints seven points clear of the relegation zone and closer to Premier League survival.

Pochettino, who got his second win as the club’s manager, said: “There were many positive aspects, especially seeing how brave my team was going head-to-head against them and really pushing forward.

“We didn’t allow them to play at any given moment and when we had the ball we really tried to pursue our philosophy of football.”

Saints’ performance had echoes of the 3-1 victory they secured over Manchester City last month, and Pochettino said he was thrilled with the manner of the result.

“I think we played well today and I think we fully deserved the win,” he said.

“Overall, we have just maintained the same trajectory since I got here, and my team has been playing the same way.

“It’s been really important that my team keeps on believing in the philosophy that I’m trying to instil in them.”

If LFC had played as we did against them this is the opinion of the cogniscenti..

I was there and I have had time to think about it.
Yea we were flicin brilliant!
We had to score because we had so much possession and so many chances, it is games like that the makes it so hard to be a Saints supporter.
We scored one and then should have scored two or three more straight away, but we didn't.
Then we scored a second and still Lpoop hadn't had a serious attempt on our goal.
Keep them out for another few minutes and get to the dressing room with a 2-0 lead, oh well never mind,
Second half and we all agreed Lpoop couldn't play that badly in the second half.
A real test and we passed, with flying colours.
Once again some curious decisions by the referee, but pleased that at the end a deserved booking for the cheat Suarez.
Not a clue as to MotM, Spider as usual, Cork was immense, Yoshida played very well in two positions, Luke had another good game, Jayrod is still improving,Lambert pulled their defence all over the place.

valderama (Liverpool): I have to admit I was expecting defeat today, but I don't see a reason to be too dismayed. Also, while we obviously didn't have the best day at the office, let us not take anything away from the Saints; they deserve some serious plaudits for their performance, and explaining the defeat as resulting from a "lacklustre" display from us does a great disservice to an exciting team playing exciting football under an exciting manager. Massive three points, I was a little apprehensive about today's game, given L'pool's recent form, but by all accounts we gave them a proper spanking. Chufffed to see Rickie get on the scoresheet, it more than makes up for him being overlooked by Ingerland yet again.

This is a big step towards safety. Now, where did I put that beer?

I don't think Boruc put a foot (or hand) wrong, his handling was way better than at the start of January and he made some important saves. However, he didn't have a huge amount to do. Meanwhile, Clyne didn't put a foot (or hand) wrong either despite having Suarez and Courtinho to deal with. That's why (just) ahead of Boruc, I went for Clyne.

Note the 'since hiring Pochettino' bit. Very astute Liverpool fan.

I, like everyone else, was outraged when the management change happened, but from the minute we kicked off against Everton the guy has been class on and off the field.

The performances and style of play have been exceptional, which is why I've been a bit annoyed with people starting to get nervous over his points return and overplaying the QPR game, which was our only really poor result since he took over.

Hat's off to NC for an incredibly insightful piece of business, now I just hope the little media pundits who were rubbing their hands saying Saints would 'get what they deserve' earlier this week (Trevor Steven etc) feck off and move onto another easy target. And I hope that the final few who hadn't moved on, move on now and look up, not down.

I for one have not seen us play this type of consistently impressive football since that spell in the late 80s (the good Strachan year was all about grinding out results for the most part). Awesome result.

No Lpoop player played well and Saints were good.
OK
He thinks Luke Shaw will be a target for bigger clubs and we won't have him next season.
Nobody told him about the Arsenal interest then? Best he doesn't apply for any scouting jobs, he is a tad late with that summary!
Bigger contract for Luke Shaw, and Spider, and Clyne, and Yoshi, and Adam, well most of them really.
If they are playing weekly now then they stand a good chance of being here next season.

Best of all, I'm fairly sure every single poster on this board knows a glory-hunting Liverpool fan who they can spend the next week ripping.

Oh, and everyone was great today but props to J-Rod: he's paid his dues and got his head down and worked even when being played out of position and now he's blossomed. Good on you, son.

There's a very good additional reason to record and study Jay Rod's goal on Match of the Day tonight.

A perpetual motion machine which, once activated, can run forever unless subject to wear, violates both the first and second laws of thermodynamics.
It is therefore supposed to be a purely hypothetical concept.

I presume as the ref allowed the run and the goal, these laws do not apply to Jay Rod.

Just watching Villa v QPR on football first. QPR battered them in the first half, god knows how they went on to lose!

Let one in right on half time against the run of play. So did we. But today we'd got the second goal for once and then got the decider for once. We were superb.

Any idea why they watered the pitch after a night of persistent rain I would think that was the last thing they wanted to do, there is a very bad cut up patch at the Chapel End where the GKs practice in the mobile net. The slick pitch did cause Suarez to lose out on a chance so I guess we shouldn't moan too much.

unbiased report from my dad sitting in my seat - wish i was there - sounds awesome!

3-1 WIN.It could have been 8-1, I have never ever seen any Saints team play as well as we did today,we were magnificent . Everyone played fantastic ,it would be difficult to pick the best player.
Boruc made some great stops and catches,Luke Shaw was out of this world,so fast and decisive, roared up the left wing sometimes crossed sometimes turned in and dribbled and passed inside the penalty area.
Morgan was enormous again and scored a bit of a scrappy goal, difficult to see, after about 5 minutes.
We never stopped from kick off we ran and ran and attacked, everyone is so fit,Rickie chased every Liverpool back pass and was still doing it 90 minutes later.
While Rickie won 90percent of all long balls Agger was climbing all over him, arms all round him
We were all hooting and shouting at the ref.Hooiveld was injured and during treatment Rickie harangued the ref.
Next time Aggers fouled Rickmiester, free kick was awarded 2 or 3 metres outside of penalty area, Rickie slotted home after a bit of a rickashy ( get it ).
2-0 up after 30 minutes. Fantastic.
Liverpool scored a scrappy goal during extra time first half.
We had missed about 4 other chances.
Adam was all over the pitch I still don't know if he was playing on the left or right,he was everywhere as was Gaston and Jay.
Liverpool were much stronger at beginning of second have but we still shackled ,Suarez, Gerrard, Downing and Johnson. Coutino was there best player everyone else was anonymous.
Jay Rodriguez goal in the 80 th minute was a great solo effort.
Right up to the end we were still going forward.
Corky was awesome again. Clyney was terrific as an attacking full back.
Brilliant game, we will not be relegated we might be the best team in the league, no seriously.

Im really starting to like Poch. He talks alot of sense and obviously has a clear footballing philosophy and has managed to train that into the players very quickly. "Brave" is indeed the right word. But not brave as in 50/50 challenges or blood, guts and thunder. Mentally brave, as in not being awed by big names or teams, believing in the manager, the system and more importantly...themse
lves. At this level, where margins are so fine, mental bravery, confidence, belief etc. is half the battle. Nigel was stickler for PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) but Poch seems to have taken that to another level...more of a mental toughness. A trait often found in only the "top" teams. The diamond is still rough, but combine all this with our squad being the right age, and a team spirit that has built up slowly through the divisions, and obviously not short on natural talent, I would most definately say the future is bright...the future is red and white (pinstripe).

How about a quick precis, basically it Liverpool who failed to turn up, the Referee and Linos gave us every decision going, Suarez was fouled out of the game, Saints were lucky to get three goals, and their finishing as always was profligate. Guly and Fox were badly missed. The Man of the Match was Gerrard because he looked good. Mo Pos team selection left many of us wondering. Have I missed anything. Oh the pitch was very wet and Liverpool are going to complain that it was too slippery. Only 32,070 people bothered to turn up, where were the rest?

I thought Spiders goal was a class act, nothing scrappy about it at all unless you refer to the Liverpool defending?

Seedhouse the Unrepentant says...
9:47am Sun 17 Mar 13

Spiders goal was class but I didn't pick that up at the time, I thought it had deflected off him. Jay Rods individual effort was excellent, picking the ball up on the halfway line and using his pace. When he starts scoring more we will move up the table in leaps and bounds. He is improving week on week.

Fantastic win yesterday, Morgan played excellently and has been our most consistent performer this season. Ricky did well although shouldn't have passed it right at their keeper when it was one-on-one. Jay-Rod did well but he needs to be more consistent, but with lots of work in the summer I think he will be loads better than he is now next season. Well done the Saints for probably our biggest win of the season, this eclipses the win at City because Liverpool have probably been the best in the Prem since Christmas, we have showed them. COYS!

A week is a long time in football. Last week Harry was Houdini and Liverpool were top 4 material.

So much to like about our performance, it was a pleasure to watch.
We totally bossed Liverpool in all departments. Desire, effort, teamwork and at last taking some of our chances.
A number of man of the match nominees, Lallana and Rodriguez get my top vote. Jay has announced his arrival as a prem player.
The best thing for me was in front of a watching England manager I saw a core of young Southampton players stating their case to soon be the core of the England team.

This was a very importanto match for us. To come out and play like that given the circumstances was just amazing. I think it would be a bit unfair to pick a MoM as it was just an excellent all round performance. Awesome in fact. Woy was probably at the match to watch the England right back. That's obviously Clyne and he may also have quite liked young Luke's performance as well. And then of course he might of liked the faultless performance of Corky too. Come on wake up Woy. 3 points off the top ten now. Just need to keep the concentration and once we're clear we can push for a comfortable league position. By the way it was Donkeycaster the Skunts were playing. Where are they all this morning? Reminds me of a Simon & Garfunkel song......The Sound of Silence"

As far as the league position will stand end of season....I see the Villa with 41 points....I am certain that neither Reading or QPR will break 35 points..if either lose their next games I think mentally they will be broken..so almost certainly games is over for those two..

Wigan I can see hitting 37 points...if they beat Newcastle we must break 40 points

In short it is in our hands completely...to be absolutely certain lets be sure to finish above Villa ...job done.

Don't 4get Sunderland, Norwich and Newcastle. Norwich are on a bad run and have only won 1 away. Newcastle have only won once on the road too. And Sunderland are nothing special either. They have Chelski Everton and Spurs still to play. And of course the Mighty Saints. While we obviously need to keep picking up points I can see one of these 3 slipping into trouble.

Talking of 'obscure', there was a Jude the Obscure once, wasn't there?

Of course, as I'm sure we all know (except 5trops, of course) Jude was a fictional working-class Thomas Hardy character who dreamed of becoming educated. A man who longed to be like other, 'better' people.

Jude reminds me of someone, the trouble is, I just can't think who; can anyone help me with that?

Hey Jude, don't take it bad.
You're a sh!te club and won't get better.
Remember you're worth no more than a f4rt,
When did you start to be a bad debter.

And anytime you feel in pain, hey Jude, refrain,
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders.
For well you know that you'e a fool who plays it cool
While watching the liquidator fold yer.

Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah ..........

I doubt you remember when you were in the prem but they have better goalies at this level, that means you need to make more chances to score than you do at your level, not that your lot can even manage that. p.s. it was 12 on target v L/pool's 2
Must ask though would you prefer mid table obscurity in the prem or just total obscurity
Quality! I had the misfortune to be in Poopee for work reasons last week. Never have I seen so many "Out of City" signs on the copious roundabouts - says it all really. Get me out of this sh1thole! COYR!

Hello Jealousy. I think you will find that one chance and a 1-0 win is worth 3 points. 17 chances and 3-1 is also worth 3 points. How are your new team Portsmouth Ladies doing?

Still buzzing with the result and all round performance.

Keep that up and a midtable finish is definately on the cards. We can push on from there.

All credit to NC...I thought he'd made an emormous gamble...but then again...what do I know.

interesting to note when redknapp took over all the cash he has spent .he was 7 points behind us at the time .at this time he is now 8 points behind us .so what a waste of money heading for the championship even more debt ridden .at 1 million mr lambert 100 plus goals just has many assists.take a bow rickie lambert you are the bargain of the century immense player .impressed hodgson no doubt

Very good result for Saints.
MP did well using the team built by the blood, sweat and tears of his great predecessor Nigel Adkins.
In recognition, Mr Cortese, please don't string Nigel along any longer, give him the severance pay he deserves NOW so that he can pick up the pieces and get on with his life.
I don't think there is any Saints supporter who would begrudge him that.
Not to do so shows what a petty little man you really are!

I think it is too late for that, the legal wheels are in motion, whatever happens I don't think Nigel will be out of pocket.

Chelsea had 24 shots today scoring 2. Spurs 12 shots scoring zero. So using your theory, we're better than them !

26hrs it took for this gem!
"MP did well using the team built by the blood, sweat and tears of his great predecessor Nigel Adkins." tell me theboooorer, would that be the same `great nigel adkins` who you spent months criticising? the same `great na` who you wanted gone months ago?
NA needs to `pick up the pieces and get on with his life` tell you what theboooorer, don't you worry your little lonely brain cell over NA`s life. I am sure he will be able to cope just fine with the wages he is still getting. if NA wants another job he can go and get one, nothing is stopping him. as for him getting a pay off, I doubt there are any saints fans who would not want him to get what he is entitled to. NC is not being `petty` by not paying him, NA is being paid.
I do feel for you thebooooorer , you like many other wums must be annoyed that saints beat the pool and are playing well. still as you have just shown, you will always find something to moan about!
