Jay Rod 'thriving' under new manager
7:30am Monday 18th March 2013 in Sport
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Jay Rodriguez
JAY Rodriguez admits he is thriving under the management of Mauricio Pochettino.
Rodriguez produced his most dynamic performance in a Saints shirt against Liverpool – capped by the brilliant third Saints goal.
The summer signing from Burnley said: “I’ve got a little bit more belief in myself and the gaffer, full credit to him, he’s given me a bit of freedom to go and play and express myself.
“He’s said that to everyone and you can see by the way we’ve played that he’s had a massive effect on us. Everyone knows how to play – we’re pressing high and don’t give anyone respect. “The belief we’ve got is fantastic and we’ve just got to carry it on. We feel we shouldn’t be where we are. We’re more than good enough to beat any team and want to be higher.”
Rodriguez’s solo goal saw him pick up the ball in the centre circle and then embark on a run that took him past Lucas Leiva and Martin Skrtel before beating Brad Jones at the second attempt.
“I decided to drive forward and got a little bit more space than I thought I would,” he said. “Then I got a little bit of luck from the palm down – and I’m chuffed to bits!
“We stuck to the game plan and it’s another massive win, one we felt we deserved which is the best thing about it, against a great Liverpool side that has great players.”
Rodriguez was elated at the final whistle but was disappointed not to score in the first half, when he hooked over from inside the penalty area during a period of Saints dominance. He admitted: “We were disappointed [at half-time], with the way we played we could’ve been more ahead. I should’ve put my chance away and was a bit disappointed with that. It put us in check.”
Saints are not in action again until Easter Saturday, when they host Chelsea.
Does Rodriguez believe two more wins will be enough to stay up?
“We’d like to think that, but we’re just going to concentrate on the next game. We’ll have a look at Chelsea and work out how to go against them and hopefully do what we did today. “Chelsea have great players and are a great team but we’ve got to concentrate on ourselves and believe we’re more than good enough to go out and get another result.”

Also interesting that that is the second goal Schneiderlin has scored with a run from nowhere that hasn't been spotted by the opposition.

I think there is still time to drag Sunderland and another team into the relegation fight.
Norwich don't score many. Stoke are struggling with their form. West Ham are stuttering. And Newcastle may regret the progress they have made in the Europa Cup.
We just need to keep picking up points and putting the pressure on them.

Jack Cork also deserves mention. This side has got at least another 12 points in it; another win against Chelsea and we can go on and get more than that.
Mauricio seems to be having a positive effect on a lot of crucial players at the club who maybe weren't realising their full potential under Adkins. Spiderman is another who is coming on leaps and bounds and I think Clyne and Shaw won't be too far behind in the future. When we stay up the real benefit of bringing in Mauricio will come to the fore next season; onwards and upwards.

I don't think 6 more points will be enough. More likely need 9 or 10 to be safe.

Sunderland are also on a poor run with 9 points from 30 which is the same as Norwich.
West Ham and Reading are 10 fom 30
Wigan and Villa 12 from 30
Saints, Newcastle and QPR 13 from 30
Our points tally over the last ten games is better than West Broms and the same as Swansea who we still have to play along with Reading, Sunderland, West Ham and Stoke.
I think any team from QPR up to Fulham should be very worried about being involved in a relegation scrap.

That's key with the amount of effort and passion it requires - couldn't see us being able to do that week in week out if we were still in any cups.
No danger of being tired mentally or physically and the game plan is simply - don't give them a minute's rest all game.
It's easy people saying we can be easily hit on the break from it, but if you stop the likes of Gerrard from having time and space to pick an accurate pass you're more likely to get the ball straight back from rushed clearances.
Simple but brave. Leaving Punch out is interesting as well and I do think his contract stance comes into it. Seems to be all about commitment with MP, and while the like of Pulis would translate that into mass defending, MP seems to advocate the opposite, ie, attack is our first line of defence.
