Roll on Saints' Chelsea game!

Morgan Schneiderlin, right, scores with a deft finish to put Saints ahead against Liverpool. Morgan Schneiderlin, right, scores with a deft finish to put Saints ahead against Liverpool.

SURELY that is now it?

Surely the win over Liverpool should put an end to any speculation as to whether Saints are good enough to stay in the Premier League?

Surely now Nicola Cortese can start counting all the extra millions that his club stand to receive next season from the new television deals?

Any neutral football supporters casting an eye at the top flight table this morning would answer ‘yes’ to the above questions.

Harry Redknapp’s QPR, Reading and Wigan – even after their late winner against Newcastle – now look the three likely candidates to drop into the Championship.

Cortese, pictured below, is seeing his biggest gamble paying off.

Sacking Nigel Adkins when Saints’ star was in the ascendancy and replacing him with a foreign coach with no previous experience in English football was a gamble, let us be under no illusions about that.

But it seems to have worked, and Saints should be dining at the top table of English football next season (with two Welsh clubs thrown in for good measure).

That would now be the view of most sensible neutrals.

But this is Saints we are talking about and lifelong fans of this most remarkable of clubs are used to being put through the emotional wrangler.

Saints supporters will only relax when safety is mathematically certain.

And being able to relax is a feeling many fans will tell you is somewhat alien to them.

The last few weeks, for example, have been typical Saints.

Beat Manchester City, the defending champions who had only lost twice in 25 league games prior to playing at St Mary’s.

Then lose at home to QPR, one of the worst top flight teams in recent history.

Then beat Liverpool, who might still be a pale shadow of the side that dominated English football in the late 70s and 80s but who arrived at St Mary’ with three successive league wins to their name and possessing the in-form Luis Suarez.

Saints managed to stop Suarez from scoring, something not many teams have managed recently and a feather in the cap for a Saints defence which has certainly had their critics this season.

Those with a handle on reality always thought Saints stood a very good chance of staying up this season, and for one big reason.

The squad has goals in it.

Even though they are 16th in the league, Saints are the eighth highest scorers in the section with 42 in 30 games.

Only the top seven clubs in the Premier League have scored more.

And it’s not just down to Rickie Lambert, though with 13 goals he will finish top of the Saints goal charts for a fourth successive season.

Following his goal against Liverpool Morgan Schneiderlin joined Jason Puncheon on five league goals for 2012/13.

Those two players could hardly manage a goal between them when they played in the third division with Saints, and lest we forget that is fairly recent history.

Now Schneiderlin and Puncheon have the same amount of league goals as Norwich’s top scorer, Grant Holt, while they are only one behind the top scorers at West Ham (Kevin Nolan) and Stoke (Jon Walters).

Defensively, Saints have tightened up since the early weeks of the season.

They had to, otherwise they would almost have been down by now.

But they still have the fourth worst defensive record in the top flight, and the only clubs to have conceded more goals – Villa, Reading, Wigan – are all below them in the table.

That tells you where Pochettino really needs to focus on strengthening this summer.

He certainly needs to bolster a department that, for whatever reason, wasn’t adequately dealt with by Cortese and Adkins last year.

If he can do that, and Saints can keep hold of their goalscoring assets, who is to say the club can’t enjoy far more of the performances that accounted for Manchester City and Liverpool next season?

To beat City could be considered a fluke, to then beat an in-form Liverpool team suggests the squad has many big talents.

You cannot keep on putting good Saints wins down to off days for the opposition, as the national press will no doubt have you think.

Pochettino has only managed two wins in eight games so far, but what victories they have been!

The Argentine has proven he can outwit the big clubs tactically.

Roll on Chelsea at St Mary’s on March 30!

Surely you've been a journo long enough to know it's not over until we're safe?

Surely you'll understand that this season's Premiership has thrown up crazy results throughout the season and there's 8 games to go.

Great result on Saturday, but that's all it is...a great result, let's not get carried away by looking to the summer already. We're Saints after all!!!

I've got confidence we'll stay up, but I won't be happy until it's certain.

Spot on with the national press attitude and it's not just the red tops..even intelligent (sic) papers cannot praise us without damning whichever team we are playing...

Let's not get carried away DE, or anyone! We're no way near safe and Wigan have game in hand, which if they win, we will only be 1 point from safety so this is a non story. Chelsea will be hard as will all the games and this is when the teams start digging in to fight for places and survival. Wigan are no mugs and have done it before.

I just hope Saints also realise they must dig in too as this will probaby go down to the wire & 37 points imo will not be enough. It could well be the magical 40 again this year! Hopefully we're gonna drag everyone up to Stoke into it! COYR

I think after this weekends results we need 3 wins from the last 8 games this would give us 39 points and if we can get a could of draws we should be in a safe place but as everyone is saying we are southampton we never dothiongs the easy way I just hope that by the last game of the season we are safe and we can have a party time.
But uf we play lijke we did on Sat-day when we take on Chelsea we should be able to beat them.
The game I am looking forward to is READING away shouls be a cracker so come on saints take us home to safety and next season lets look at getting midtable ready to push on the next season with a top six finish it feel good being a saints fan today

Stoke have only one once in their last 10 games and that was 2-1 against Reading at the Brittania and picked 4 points from 30.
Sunderland are also on a poor run with 9 points from 30 which is the same as Norwich.
West Ham and Reading are 10 fom 30
Wigan and Villa 12 from 30
Saints, Newcastle and QPR 13 from 30
Our points tally over the last ten games is better than West Broms and the same as Swansea who we still have to play along with Reading, Sunderland, West Ham and Stoke.
I think any team from QPR up to Fulham should be very worried about being involved in a relegation scrap.

Always thought 31+9=40 - that's what they taught me at school!
It's never over until it is mathematically impossible for anyone to not catch us.
At the moment even Wigan with their game in hand can't!
Interesting stuff - if I was a neutral sat on the fence I wouldn't want to see Saints go down - they are top entertainers! Look at the games we played first part of the season we gave most teams a run for their money - even the reigning champions at theirs on the opening day. Whilst you could be negative and look at Adkins dismissal - most supporters would like us to go down on that one decision alone!
Think there will be lots more twists and turns - and I think we could even be in the bottom 3 again before the end of the season. Do I care - obviously not enough.
Just glad to be able to watch every game every week for free on line. I miss the atmosphere, but with the prices at the level they - I'd rather save for that rainy day when football gets a grip on reality.

Sunderland have fallen back into the mix and their Next four games M. Utd at home, Chelsea away Newcastle away Everton home They then have Vulla away, Stoke and Saints at home and Spurs away.
If West Ham beat W.B.A. in their next match you have to fancy them to be safe, if they fail they then have Liverpool away and Man Utd at home, which could leave them in the mix.
So it goes on.
I still think Sunderland have the hardest run in. Whilst Stoke have the poorest form.
Good article echo at least it was positive and actually the Sunday Telegraph gave Saints good press. That was one of the best performances against Liverpool since MLT scored a hatrick.

I watched Sunday Supplement on Sky yesterday. All the journos sat discussing relegation and who would be in the mix. Patrick Barclay then commented " One team I don't want to get relegated is Southampton. They are fantastic. They play with 8 forwards"

Some may think our image is shot but it seems to me our football is winning over the neutrals.

Yes indeedy Millenium was cool..

Wembley was some sort of Orwellian nightmare with a non stop interminable announcements of what i could not do in a a so called free society!¨

Interestingly while i am no fan of egg chasing Twickenham is a hell of a day out and not a elf and safety crackpot or announcer anywere..jeez they even fill your beer up in your seat!

Really good piece, Simon.

Remember how some (Slugger for example) said we'd be comfortably in mid-table or higher this season? Well, no, not quite, but in many ways, not far from it.

We just needed to adapt and we have been somewhat slow doing so. There's a way to go yet and none of us (well, Retford, maybe) should count our chickens, but I think we can get another 12 points this season, which would very possibly be enough for those who did bet on a top-half finish to enjoy their visit to Bet Fred's.
