LMA hit out at managerial sackings

Michael Appleton Michael Appleton

Football's attitude to sacking managers is "arrogant" and the statistics on dismissals are "embarrassing", the League Managers' Association claimed today.

Blackburn's sacking of Michael Appleton and Stevenage's dismissal of Gary Smith this week means that 33 managers have lost their jobs - a five-year high - since August.

Among them is Nigel Adkins, who was relieved of his duties at Saints in January by chairman Nicola Cortese.

LMA chief executive Richard Bevan said taking coaching staff into account, the number was 103 so far this season.

Bevan said: "That's over 100 people, 100 managers, 100 families.

"I'm not sure where the arrogance of football comes from that we don't have to behave as any other industry.

"It's embarrassing for the game that all of those sackings are unfair dismissals.

“The volatility is undermining the profession.

"We need to work as a group - the Premier League, the Football League, the Professional Footballers' Association, the LMA - to ensure that we have better training not only for managers, but also an understanding of how you run a football club."

Four of the managerial changes have come in the Premier League, 17 in the Championship, 15 in League One and 11 in League Two. Of the total, 14 were resignations rather than dismissals.

Nottingham Forest have had four managers since July and Appleton is the third manager to leave Blackburn this season.

Asked about Blackburn, Bevan said: "Everything in business is about communication.

"Michael told me he had no conversation at all during his tenure since January with the Indian representative running the club.

"He's got 20 players on the injury bench. What he needed was support, not a letter of sacking. To have five managers this season is nonsense.

"Blackburn need to look very hard into stability, they need to look at communication with the fans and they need to look very hard into how they can invest in personnel, look medium term.

"That's the only way they're going to climb up the table."

It's a tough one, this. Did any of us want Nigel to go? No. Do any of us not think we're a better team under Mauricio? No. Therein lies the rub.

(When I say "us" I mean Southampton fans without mental problems, as opposed to, well, you know who.)

I guess it's a savage business. But managers know this before they embark on it as a career and I don't think replacing them is always wrong. I mean, was Brian McDermott ever going to keep Reading up or establish them in the Premier League? I don't think so...

Adkins won't be coming back cos I've just heard that he is having talks with Reading manager at the Majeski stadium today. Report says likely to be appointed soon to be Reading's new manager.

I hope for Nigels sake he doesnt go to Reading. He could do better after his record at Saints.

I cant see him going anywhere until the summer.

West Ham would be a good fit?

We've got some GOOD Results with MP against CITY and POOL ... And after the last HOME GAME he has the Vote of Confidence to go on and take THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON further UP THE PREMIER LEAGUE and finish above Wet Spam.

His Transfer Market Dealings will secure his tenure.

MP has galvanised the Team with his astute tactics and No-one could argue that we were scintillating against POOL.

What is done is done with NIGEL and we all wish him well. He had our support to the very end - including shouting for him as he came off the coach at QPR AWAY (El Sackico)

TIME TO LOOK FORWARD ...

NEXT HOME GAME vs CHELSEA AND A RESULT.

WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON.

RED ARMY. FIGHT AND WIN.

To be fair, we don't yet know whether Poch will be a better manager. The signs are good, but results not great yet. As far as McDermott is concerned, I think he has done as well as anyone could given the strength of his squad.

Does the LMA have any comment to make about managers who quit their jobs and move to other teams?

Indeed, given that Appleton jumped ship from Blackpool after 66 days. Blackburn at least had the courtesy to keep him for one day more before booting him.

Was the LMA beating their breast after that? Not a word.

I agree with you BB. I live a lot closer to Reading than Southampton and McDermott was a very popular manager who had very limited to funds to make a Premier team.

A number of my close friends are Reading fans including some who are ex-semipros or in one case somebody who played for Reading reserves. These people tend to regard Reading as a Championship club and not a Premier club. Although they welcome promotion they are happier when their team is in the Championship because they know Reading can never be a force at the top level without huge investment in the team.

So if they are relegated there won't be too much depression about. Strangely some of them don't rate Nigel Adkins as a manager as they didn't rate Steve Coppell when he took Reading up.

They attribute the success of NA and SC to the ground work Alan Pardew put in when he manged both clubs. Pardew was very popular at Reading but upset Madjeski.

Personally I don't agree with them.

As far as I'm concerned the LMA comments carry little weight. Logic and the nature of the game dictates that this is and will always be a results driven contract between parties who are fully aware of the consequences and the history and are compensated accordingly. The LMA will have to put out statements like this to justify their slice of the pie and to convince members they are 'working hard' on their behalf.

NO SAINTS FAN - wanted Nige to GO !!

Rather than NC having mental problems -he may be seen by some as being an extremely astute businessman,

He did an interview after the SACKING and HE IS THE HIRER AND FIRER - so he is the man to answer concerns that the Fans still have.

TOGETHER AS ONE !!

WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON.

i think cortesse made a big decision we have about the same points we had under nigel for mps first 7 games ,but if we got onto trouble the fans would turn on cortesse not mp .with the timing before the transfer window .but mp has done ok 9 points from 7 games ,the players want to play for him jay as improved .and we did play with a bit 2 much respect .if you think in nigals last game at chelsea left lambert on the bench 1st half we just passed it across the back not troubling chelsea 2 0 down we just went for it lambert on .if we started that game like that we could of won it.all mp as done is go for it every game .but i was getting fed up with nigel leaving him on the bench.dont think mp will do that unless ricky gets a knock .when a player is 30 he needs to keep sharpness .wont happen sat on the bench
