Rickie Lambert has extended his Saints contract to 2016

Rickie Lambert has extended his contract at Saints until 2016 and has revealed he wants to finish his career at the club.

The striker's current deal was due to run out in 2014, but the club have moved to tie him down for another two years.

"I'm over the moon to sign with Southampton for another three years," he told Saints' website.

"I am already enjoying myself massively at this club and the aim now is to stay on for another three years and help push the club on further than where it already is.

"There is a lot of ambition in this club for the next few years and that is one of the main reasons that I have signed the contract – and that is why I want to end my career here."

Lambert's new deal will take him beyond his 34th birthday.

He joins fellow Saints stalwarts Morgan Schneiderlin and Kelvin Davis, along with Jason Puncheon, in extending their contracts in the last few weeks until at least 2016.

His new deal means that, aside from Artur Boruc who is currently due to become a free agent at the end of the season, the club have all their regular first-team players contracted until at least 2015.

Lambert, who joined Saints from Bristol Rovers in 2009 for £1m,  took his goal tally for the club to 101 with a deflected free-kick in last weekend's stunning 3-1 victory over Liverpool, at St Mary's.

His 13 Premier League strikes this season make him the top English goalscorer in the division.

I also would like to make comment on Rickie's contract extention.
We have the best true centre forward in the premiership bar none.
A massive thanks must go to Pardew for spotting his quality and Nigel for his knowledge of individual fitness.
Other than pace,he has it all,his close control allows him time to pick a pass or get a shot in.
Great signing,most teams in the prem would give their right arm to have had a chance to sign him.
Their loss our gain!
200 goals has to be the target now.
Why not!

Having been around when saints finished runners up in the early 80's i have been through many emotions as a saints fan. Desperation on relegation, excitement at wembly, 1-0 wins last minute at Krap Nottarf.i am now feeling we are on the verge of something very,Very special. rickie is a piece of this puzzle along with Spider man and Punch. A new contract for King Artur will give us the spring board to really push on.

Even going back to the dark days of league one I,ve always thought if Rickie doesn,t play we don,t.Do you all remember the Johnstones paint trophy final when the Carlisle defender handled the ball because he knew he had to stop him from scoring.it didn,t work because Rickie scored the penalty and still it continues,for me as good an all round player as we have ever had and given the opportunity one of the most lethal strikers around.Rickie you are my football hero.

All the players signing up its a very good indicator of the progress our saints are making.I think apart from a 2 to 3 year period under lawrie this is the best saints side I have seen, and whats really exciting is they are going to get even better, well done young LAMBERT, I don't think it was to hard a decision to have to make.

Anyway Good news about Rickie. I like the attachment to his name promoted by warrens and I think all sports commentators should be made to use the words Rickie Lambert - Southampton's goal machine in every match. This would only be fair as they already do this for other players , for instance
Papa Cisse - Offside
Andy Carroll - Falls to the floor
Luis Saurez - Is not happy about that decision
This must be their full names as you hear them mentioned in every game. In tandem with this, I did not realise that Pompey had changed their team name to Portsmouth-Nil!
