Saints On This Day - March 22 1947: Saints 1 Millwall 2 Saints threw away a lead given to them by Thomas Lewis on a poor pitch at The Dell.
1952: Luton 2 Saints 1 Jimmy McGowan fired Saints in front at Kenilworth Road, but as with five years earlier they could not hang on.
1958: Saints 4 Torquay 2 Torquay took a shock lead before goals from Terry Paine, Derek Reeves, John Page and Don Roper ensured an eventually comfortable victory at the Dell.
This was the season that Saints bagged an incredible club record 112 league goals.
1969: Saints 1 Leicester 0 Ron Davies headed an 88th minute winner from a Terry Paine free-kick.
1975: Saints 3 Notts County 2 Nick Holmes netted his first league goal of the season and Mick Channon scored twice.
1980: Nottingham Forest 2 Saints 0 Nick Holmes was handed the captaincy for the first time as Saints slumped to defeat at the City Ground against a Forest side who would retain the European Cup a few weeks later.
John Robertson (penalty) and Garry Birtles were on target in the first half.
1986: Saints 0 Chelsea 1 Colin Pates scored the only goal midway through the second half.
1995: Saints 3 Newcastle 1 Saints scored three late goals to beat Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle.
Paul Kitson had put The Toon ahead on 18 minutes, and there were only four minutes left when sub Neil Heaney equalised.
As the game entered added on time Gordon Watson pounced on Jason Dodd’s cross to fire Saints in front.
Neil Shipperley then pounced on a Pavel Srnicek mistake to increase the lead.
1997: Saints 2 Leicester 2 Saints slipped to the bottom of the Premier League table after a fifth game without a win.
Egil Ostenstad and Ulrich Van Gobbel twice put Saints in front, only for the Foxes to level through Emile Heskey and Steve Claridge.
2003: Saints 2 Aston Villa 2 Kevin Davies came off the bench to net his only league goal of the season in the 90th minute as Saints rescued a point after being 2-0 down at the break.
Davies’ goal was Saints’ 500th Premier League goal and earned them their 500th Premier League point.
James Beattie scored the first Saints goal, his 20th in the league that season, after Lee Hendrie and Darius Vassell had put the visitors in control.
2008: Saints 0 Coventry 0 Saints earned a valuable point in their fight against relegation from the Championship as they held fellow strugglers Coventry to a dull draw at St Mary’s.
2011: Charlton 1 Saints 1 Former Saints striker Bradley Wright-Phillips netted an 86th minute equaliser for Charlton to end Saints’ run of four straight League 1 victories.
Radhi Jaidi had headed Saints in front in the 64th minute.
