Saints out to heap scorn on Pundit Lawro

Mark Lawrenson in his playing days

Mark Lawrenson in his playing days

First published in Sport

SAINTS will again aim to prove ex-Liverpool star Mark Lawrenson wrong again today.

In his role as an online pundit, Lawrenson has predicted Saints will lose 2-1 at Nigel Adkins’ Reading.

That is no big shock, though – Lawrenson has predicted Saints will lose every single game they have played in 2013!

In fact, he has predicted them to lose in every league and cup game since correctly predicting a win against Reading back in early December!

Last week he predicted Saints to lose at home to Chelsea, just as he had thought Mauricio Pochettino’s men would lose at home to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Unsurprisingly, given Saints’ good run which has seen them move up to 12th, Lawrenson has got few predictions correct in recent weeks for his BBC online predictions column.

In fact, the only scoreline he did get right was QPR’s shock 2-1 win at St Mary’s.

Despite all that, Lawrenson, pictured during his Liverpool heyday, still thinks Saints will avoid the drop – and claims, despite all his negative predictions, he always knew they would end up safe!

“They are strong going forward which is why I always fancied they would be OK,” he said this week.

Saints fan Daren Wheeler, who writes a weekly column Beautiful South in the Sports Pink, described Lawrenson’s predictions as “absoutely crazy.”

“How he can say he always knew we would be safe when he’s predicted we’d lose every game this year is ridiculous.

“Does he read when he writes?”

Lawrenson’s online predictions go alongside a celebrity from outside the football world every week.

This week, singer Ollie Murs is the chosen celeb and he has predicted a 3-3 draw between Adkins’ current club and former employers.

“That prediction makes a lot of sense,” said Wheeler. “Which is more than you can say about what Lawrenson says.”

How can Lawrenson predict Saints staying up if at the same time predicting Saints to loose their games each week ? I'd like to explain to Lawrenson. Continuous defeats equals NO points, equals relegation....The guy is a fool.

Good post....unfortunatel
y modern day reporters are office bound and don't hide in bushes anymore wearing flasher coats, dark glasses and trillby hats.

Still, well done to the Echo for this story as Lawro is past it as a pundit.

As an ex-local paper journalist (not the Echo, though did start my career there many years ago when it was the Southern Evening Echo), I managed to get hold of Lawro for an interview a few years back. I rang the MOTD studio, left a message, and he called me back. Easy! Perhaps a DE reporter could have a go?
To be honest, he seemed like a decent bloke, so it would be interesting to find out why he's so negative when it comes to the Saints.

Lauro never has a decent thing to say about Saints since we beat Liverpool in the 1980's and he was made to look like a complete pillock on the pitch (which he was a lot of the time). It is about time he was put out to pasture. He always looks so bloody miserable like a dog chewing a wasp - he smiles less than Andy Murray. He is always negative and rarely gives praise. Why the BBC persist with him I'll never know.

Before indulging in scorn or outrage, one should ask oneself how seriously Mark Lawrenson takes himself as a football seer. Not very in my estimation.
I see he's going "head to head" with a Cockney Red called Olly this weekend, and I'm pretty confident that he's no more in earnest than Lawrenson.
My prediction: a comfortable 4-1 win for Saints after a hairy opening ten minutes.
I don't recall ever correctly predicting a score.

Lawrenson is quietly simply a moron and has and will always hate Saints! He never liked what he experiance against Saints and was a very average player at best!

The BBC need to wake up to the ape they employ from the Liverpool hay day, and get rid and replace Lawrenson with someone who can do the job with a brain between his ears, and not just turn up and get paid for doing nothing! He makes as much sense as Mr Blobby! Time for younger freaher more football oritated ex-player who dose not always think Liverpool is the only team on this planet. At least Hanson talk sense, even tough still biases too! But Hanson can often be fair minded about footy issues.
