ALEX Pike bids to add another honour to his superb managerial CV tomorrow.

Pike aims for his second successive promotion as Gosport Borough boss when the Hampshire club travel to Hemel Hempstead for the Southern League Premier Division play-off final.

That comes after Borough, who only sneaked into the play-offs on the final day of the regular league season, won 2-1 last Tuesday at a Stourbridge side who had finished 13 points clear of Pike and co.

Victory at Hemel would take Pike – who made his name by winning the FA Vase at Wembley with Wimborne 21 years ago – and Borough into the Blue Square South.

Incredibly, if they go up again they would be just two divisions below neighbours Portsmouth – just six years after being EIGHT rungs below Pompey on the football pyramid!

Pike was appointed Gosport boss with the club in the Wessex League top flight in December 2005.

In his first full season, 2006/07, Pike guided Borough to the Wessex title.

In a nail-biting final day decider, Gosport had to avoid defeat by two clear goals at second placed AFC Totton to win the championship.

Gosport lost 1-0 so won the title, and promotion, by a single goal difference from the Stags.

In their fourth season in the Southern League in 2011/12, Pike led Gosport to third place in Division 1 South and West.

A home win against Sholing in the play-off semi-final saw Gosport travel to Poole for a place in the Premier Division. The Dolphins were leading until veteran ex-Pompey boss Steve Claridge equalised in the final minute of time added on. Claridge and Justin Bennett added two more in extra time to return Gosport to the Southern League’s Premier Division for the first time since 1990.

Now they are on the verge of going up again – which would be Pike’s third promotion in his last seven seasons at Privett Park.

There are a handful of ex-Eastleigh players at Borough who could well be playing against the Spitfires in the Blue Square South next season.

Pike has signed the likes of Jamie Brown, Danny Smith, Brett Poate, Adam Wilde, Aaron Cook and Bennett in recent times.

But with the prolific Bennett injured in recent months, it’s been a signing from the Wessex League that has helped Gosport’s latest promotion bid.

Rory Williams returned from GE Hamble in January and has netted 16 times since – including the equaliser at Stourbridge in midweek.

Though it was a jump of two divisions from Hamble to Gosport, Williams’ success has not raised eyebrows at his former club.

Speaking recently, Hamble co-boss Dave Lewis said: “It comes as no surprise to our lads, me or Danny Bowers before me that Rory’s doing so well.

“I said to Alex Pike at the time they signed him that you don’t know just how good Rory is until you’re working with him in training.

“He’s one of those players who I thought would find it easier to affect a game at Gosport’s level than he did in the Wessex League.

“There’s more structure and shape at that level and Rory likes to exploit spaces.

“It’s not a foregone conclusion that players can go up a couple of leagues and make a success of it, no matter how good they are.

“Leigh Mills was one of the best in our league playing for Winchester City last season, but it didn’t work out for him at Eastleigh.

“But Rory keeps in touch with Danny (Bowers) and he texts me from time to time and, from what we’ve heard, Gosport are over the moon with him.”
