Sedgwick 173-4 v Westgate A 105-9

THIS 20/20 match provided thrilling viewing for spectators on a fair and warm evening.

Sedgwick won the toss and decided to bat. The openers quickly showed their intent scoring at nearly 9 an over. Adam Hornby took the lead but 16-year-old Joe Portman proved more than a handful at the other end.

The Westgate bowlers could not stem the scoring and one or 2 loose deliveries each over were put away for 4s and the occasional 6.

They were on 79 in the 10th over when Joe decided to run a 3 which just was not there and was out on 19, however the platform had been set. Hornby was already on 59 and a possible 100 was on the cards with half the overs still left.

Simon Willacy proved a good support for the next 5 overs chipping in a useful 22 before 3 wickets were lost in 3 overs. On 143 for 4, Adam on 91 and 3 overs to go a big score was there for the taking and a 20/20 hundred a real possibility.

With the last ball of the 18th Adam secured the 100 and then went on to end 113no (11x4 6x6) and the team on a very defendable 173-4.

Westgate’s openers knew that they had to keep the run rate up and set of with real intent however the young opening bowlers Joe Portman and Michael Sharp did not panic and Joe took the first wicket with a superb catch from captain Jason Dalzell in the third over with the score just on 13.

Westgate played their shots and the score crept up however in the 7th over with the score on 39 Joe Portman made a killer blow taking a hat trick – all three were clean bowled.

Opener Craig Atkinson put up a fight until he was out with the score on 66 but there was no way back for Westgate and they finished their innings on 105-9.

The semi-final will see Sedgwick take on Ibis.
