Wanyama reveals Saints offer was "not right"

Daily Echo: Victor Wanyama Victor Wanyama

Saints target Victor Wanyama has revealed that his potential transfer to St Mary’s has stalled because the personal terms offered were "not right" for him.

Celtic have already accepted a bid for the Kenyan international, but the midfielder has rejected Saints' first proposal to him.

Wanyama said: "While the bid was ok for Celtic, the terms were not right for myself and my agent.

"I am open to what offers are made, but I am relaxed and it's important that Celtic are happy too."

Premier League newboys Cardiff are said to have made their own counter proposal in a bid to persuade Wanyama to join them.

Saints could also be facing a snub from £15m-rated Cagliari midfielder Radja Nainggolan, who said he has been made an offer by the club but is not yet convinced.

Mauricio Pochettino is also chasing the signature of Roma striker Pablo Osvaldo, although he too is reported to be holding out for a move to a more established club.

Wanyama is a great player.
But i think he would use us a stepping
stone and maybe not be a team player.
We have a team that works well together as they play for the shirt, only players that want to do this should be signed, instead of players looking for a quick buck.
I think Saints were better when they
kept their transfer dealings under the radar and then announce the signing.
Perhaps we need to be looking at player that are not being sought by every club in the land i.e a michu.

One rumour I just read says talks broke down because he is after £85k / week and £2m signing on fee. I would say he would be our highest payed player by some margin on that and he's not that much better than Spider-Man and Cork to deserve it. If this rumour is true we will and should move on.

Shocking news: football player and agent demand a lot of money!!
Wake up people. If you want players that are going to take us to the next level, it will cost. And a lot!
I don't know if Wanyama is good enough to improve the team, but whoever is, will have the same demands.
And they are also very likely to be mercenaries only thinking about the money.
If what you want is a very good player, who's playing for the shirt and the club and will demand a small fee, I suggest you move away from football to.... well, if you find something else, let me know!

Funny how six months ago he was most heavily linked with Man U and Arsenal and now it's us and Cardiff. No offense to us, like, but what's changed?

I suspect his agent might like to 'try it on' a bit. That's sort of his job, I suppose, but hopefully he'll sit down with Nicola and see sense.

Lets not be naïve; players and their agents are mercenary and will understandably get the best deal they can.

However, Wanyama doesn't seem like the sort of man we want - too greedy and, as somebody else has said, likely just to see Saints as a step up the ladder. We want players who buy into Cortese's 'dream' and who show little hesitation in joining us as part of 'the project'. Forget him.

I don’t think many get a second chance.

Hopefully Cortese is very strict with budget. I distinctly remember Marcus saying that we would be delivered to a position where. If the Liebhers walked away we would not be financially overburdened.

Wanyama has already tried to use the media to broker better deal. He was quoted by the Mirror on Friday as saying:

“My club has agreed a deal with ¬Southampton, but I will also have to consider terms before I become a Saint.”

On Saturday he is back peddling
“"I have just heard of the same interest in the media and currently I am on holiday enjoying myself. I will speak to my agent later to find out the true position.
"I don't think it will be appropriate for me to speak about something I am not aware about. My agent knows everything that is happening and he has not contacted me so for now I want to enjoy my holiday."
Now its off – doesn’t sound like a “saint” to me

Over the last couple of years we have done really well to sign players who's ambition matches that of Saints, players that are hugry to achieve, players that see Saints as an opertunity.

I think I would prefer saints to sign top Championship players than someone who is trying to milk the most out of football at 21.

If things go well for this guy he will go to a Champions League club and struggle.

If not he will get well paid at Cardiff where the team struggles and he doesnt get to progress as a player

"not right for myself and my agent"

is a bad thing to say.

Sadly I think this could be what it's like for Saints in the transfer window until we are an established team in the Prem league. I read Nainggolan has turned us down because the likes of Roma & Inter are interested in him. Tricky to compete with teams offering European football even if we have the money.

Cardiff's gain is our gain if they are that stupid to pick up another foreign greedy mercenary who has no loyalty, no integrity and no future at St Mary's. If any of you look at the clips of his playing at Celtic he'd be giving away more penalties than Josh and Joe put together. There must be better out there than him - And if you ever read these comments Victor just think of the reception you will get at St Mary's when you turn up to the tune of 'Fat greedy b'stard' There is no 'I' in team and you are not a one-man band as you appear to be a Celtic.

I say the vid of Wanyama when Celtic Played Barca. Frankly he didn't look that special. Barca just gave him loads of space and he didn't do anything particularly great with the ball. He also seemed to use his hips and thighs a lot when he challenged for the ball and some refs will give that as a foul all day long. The articles give the impression that he is just am mercenary, but there are contradictory statements out there so I say we shouldn't read too much into what the press say. Just wait, and see. So far NC hasn't let us down.

Can't really envisage Barnet beating Barcelona in the Champions league (and Wanyama scored in that one). He is a very good player indeed and we need to get used to paying top money if we want to attract that class of player.

I think it was more like...

Vic: Thanks for agreeing to speak to me Mr Cortese, a lot of people have been put off by the fact I don't play at the top level.

NC: Errr, yeah, no problem. What are you looking for though - what can convince you to join?

Vic: Well, what's the standard like? Will I be able to turn out against sub standard opposition every week and just up my game in four big games a season, sorry maybe one or two now Rangers have been stitched up?"

NC: Errr, sorry Vic, no.

Vic: Oh. Well will Gary Hooper be coming too?

NC: No, I believe some Championship clubs are in for him now, which is more his level.

Vic: But what about all the other SPL imports to the Premier League. They've done well haven't they?

NC: Yes, Samaras was awesome of course and that crap winger from Rangers that Newcastle signed up. What was his name again?

Vic: Can't remember. But I do remember James Beattie doing well in Scotland having been appalling at Championship level in England. But what's the atmosphere like at St Mary's? It's really good at Parkhead once or twice a season, but crap for the rest of the time because there is no competition or pressure on our games.

NC: Well, let's just say those few big games you get once every two or three years against Liverpool or Man Utd happen a lot more regularly for us.
So. Let's talk money.

Vic: Yeah, I want £100,000 a week please or I'm thinking of going to Cardiff.

NC: Errr... right. I'll let you know.

A few people have said I've lacked ambition by saying we should be going for 'under the radar' signings rather than more expensive options, but I think this week is a good example of why we should steer clear and Gaston and Butner last summer were exactly the same.

I'm not against ambition, but you cannot rush things.

For me, you buy in hungry players with a point to prove who have, for one reason or another, been overlooked or need to be sold.

You ensure there are no big egos or wages taken on board to disrupt team unity and you build on the success of last year with some key additions that improve the squad.

You finish Top 10 and establish yourself in the league.

Once you have shown you are a decent size team with European aspirations you naturally attract and compete for these types of player anyway.

This gives you bargaining power and means you don't get held to ransom on wages or get used to create interest from other clubs.

So my point is, trying to rush can leave you saddled with expensive players who are here for the wrong reason.

And, in my opinion, there are plenty of other options on players who are probably just as good as the ones we've been linked with but don't have the same agent and wage demands.

Amazing (and embarrassing) how quick some people are to turn against players based on a few rehashed quotes they find online.

We finished 14th in the Premier League, and have been completely off the radar for 4 years for many players who don't follow English football other than the EPL.

To expect players of a high calibre to be jumping through hoops to sign for us is ridiculous.

And to brand players as "greedy" for wanting to know all the options they have on the table is incredibly blinkered.

Man up whingers. We're aiming for a higher calibre of players this summer and it's not going to be easy, but I'm sure MP and NC will be doing their best...

Read today in one of the national's "transfer talk" that his agents were encouraging a move to Turkey "where he would pay less income tax" We therefore can see his priorities which is not to play in the most competitive league in the world (and therefore justify his exhorbitant wage demands) but to see how much he can fill his wallet - Saints do not need this kind of carpet bagger - there is plenty of talent out there for less cost - I expect that he probably thinks Cardiff will have a different tax regime!

Well I hear Nainggolan is not the type of player we are looking for? It's all about agents using Saints to get their players in the window. I'm sure all will be fine, and the players Poch wants NC will do his best to bring in.

Firstly, s@d off to Cardiff we don’t need mercenarys, we will pay good money for people with the right attitude, people who want to play for the club and it's fans as well as making a good living.

Secondly, its time the clubs in the big European leagues refuse to deal with agents, I have no problem with a PA to help make arrangements for the player like travel, hotels, meetin
gs ect and even advisers to explain financial deals but its time the players made their own decisions regarding their careers.

Edgar Davids played for Barnet don't forget..so suppose we'll never know if they could have beaten Barca???..:o)

Move on if he doesn't want to be a team player then we don't want him. I personally think all these paper bids are smoke screens for other players. The real targets like lovren will be unvailled without the press knowing very little. That's the cortese way and it' fine by me. I do expect 3 or 4 in by friday in time for pre-season next week. so watch this space. ......... lots of love Gary Hooper

Cardiff is just a ruse to STALL any decision for a few weeks/month.

He is waiting for another club but they can't make a move at the moment until another deal goes through i.e. Reina or Suarez to Spain, Bale to Spain, Fellaini to Arsenal or even Fellaini NOT to Arsenal would allow them to bid etc. (There are a number of big deals that could happen).

I was told when Saints originally went in for him (a few weeks ago) he was going WITH his manager Neil Lennon to Everton (did everyone read the paper yesterday where Neil's brother was telling everyone in NI to put a bet on his brother being the next Everton manager - it was a CERT !).
Saints went back in again when Neil didn't get the job but imo the player is still trying to use whatever reason he can to STALL any decision until mid July (hence his comments about "I'm on holiday until July 10th").

Imo It is not about wages (extra 10k or not), or Cardiff etc it is about delaying any decision until later in the transfer window when he will know which clubs are after him.
.
The same thing happened last year we went in early for Gaston and a few others.
GR waited until later in the transfer window when he knew which teams were in for him, before agreeing to come, some others got better offers from CL sides and didn't come.

I think this is something of an 'inbetween' situation.
On the one hand, he looks a decent prospect, and he's played in the Champions League(well too) and so he could be one to develop over the next 3-4 years into a Toure/Viera type engine.
On the other hand, he's played in Scotland, which with all due respect, is Championship/League One level at best.
Also, he's still young which is good, but raw too which would mean he looks more like a project to develop over a couple of seasons, not an immediate answer nor improvement to our team.
We've made a decent sized bid for him, but seems from the stories that his Mr 10% is pushing him to choose a higher pay cheque/signing on fee than to choose a team to build to the next level with.
I'm a realist-if he is as good as some people are saying, he would come to us, develop for say 3 seasons, then head off to one of the big 4/top sides on the continent.
But, as a realist I'd also say that if he wants to develop, Saints would be a far better choice than Cardiff-at this stage. Cardiff might do great next year as we did this, and become a force over the coming years, who knows. But right now, Saints are the side who've been there and survived that first season, and are being tipped by many in the game as the dark horse to do well/challenge the teams around 6th place and the Europa league slots.
Cardiff are where we were a year ago-needing to prove the belong at first, so if he was thinking on a career progression path, he'd jump at the chance to join us.
Anyway, if , as has been implied, he and his agent are after cash above all else(why would you consider Turkey if not?) then good luck to him, and no thanks.
I want to see hungry, exciting players who want to get better, not just better off.

Make no mistake this guy is the real deal, he is a warrior, strong, fantastic in the air, ball sticks to his feet, smashes goals from long range and brilliant at headers, well capable of putting 10+ goals in from midfield and eclipses any other player at Saints by far.
Whatever they pay for him he will definitely be worth more next year once he tears the prem up and whoever does sign him, Saints will end up finishing beneath them.
Pay the fee, so worth it.

Where does Ramirez fit into your hungry players scenario? He is our most expensive player ever and is very inconsistent. And in my opinion not committed to the cause.

If he is asking high wages let him go to a big club we cant do this yet until we have completed the expansion and clubs can now not do what pompey did pay what you cant afford because of the new now implemented premier league rules i can confirm that gaston gets 30.000 a week this is saints pay structure .This is what we offered and he wants more money he probably gets paid more at celtic so its not surprising really some will slip through .But you dont have to spend big to do well, in the premier league .in 2000 saints signed delap for 4m .After that we bought no player over 4 m and were in premier league till 5 years after that so can be done

I agree Gaston didn't have a great first year-or rather his impact was lower than I'd hoped for. However, hopefully second season will see the best of him.
Anyway, my point was about who we are going to sign FROM now, rather than looking back and picking holes.

You know the original interview Nainggolan gave to Goal.com didn't say 'Southampton are my last choice'. He was quoted as saying things were still undecided. The 'last choice' bit appeared a day later in another media outlet and has been repeated by others ever since. I think someone is trying to put a spanner in the works. Do you really think someone would say something like that if he hadn't already decided? Sound like the Italian media playing games to me. Maybe someone with a connection to one of the Italian clubs that have made lower offers. Anyway, all speculation. Looking forward to see who we do actually sign...

why is "terms not right" a pathetic and insulting comment?

why does everyone think that "terms not right" mean he wants higher wages? there are so many different aspects to a negotiation and wages is just one of them. he might not be happy with the image rights or bonus structure, it might even be housing.

why again do people want to tear into a player just because he might not want to play for us. we still might be negotiating with him and he still might sign and if he does a few people are going to look a bit silly. then again he might not sign and if he doesn't then we will sign someone else. he might not even be on our radar anyway as all the conformation and talk has come from him, his agent, and they might just be using saints to try to get a move elsewhere anyway. agents know we don't talk about transfers so they know we wont confirm or deny any of this talk.

Do the people who think it is wrong for a player to reject the terms of an offer from Saints, also think that Nicola Cortese is a man who accepts everything that is offered to him the first time of asking?

What happened at the end of last season would indicate he is not. And neither did Nigel Adkins when he joined us. He went back to Scunthorpe to say goodbye to his old players and staff against Cortese's wishes.

Where does Ramirez fit into your hungry players scenario? He is our most expensive player ever and is very inconsistent. And in my opinion not committed to the cause.

I dont think that its neccisarily "pathetic and insulting", but i dont think it shows a great deal of maturity. Basically he should have kept tight-lipped, but in the end its his life.

Its not just Saints, if I was any club (Apart from one that was managed by 'Arry) I would be put of by an Agent trying to use the media to "Up" a deal for a 21 year old.

The guy might become the next Claude Makélélé but its hard to tell playing in the SPL. Is he better than Spider or Cork? Who knows..He played well against Barca..but i remember Chappy playing well against Man U a couple of seasons ago...Alas he didnt go for 12m

I suppose some find it interesting to keep floating rumours but I would rather wait for the final news.

no some will slip through because of the wages allowance structure if they want more money they will go to the big clubs with money even arsenal have to do this rvp man utd 2 others went to man city .you can only pay what your finances allow unless you cheat like pompey did and look what happened to them for doing so .Plus lets now not forget the new rules the premier league have implemented stopping teams doing what pompey did .Only clubs like man city chelsea can raise the budget with the champions league allowing there owners to make profit this puts the top 5 on a different budget .if arsenal cant compete most of the rest wont either

where does it say he wans more money? again contract negotiations can be quite complex and the smallest thing can be a sticking point. the player might want a buy-out clause in his contract or he might not want a relegation clause. he isn't a mercenary just because he hasn't signed after the first offer. as much as NC might want to do business behind closed doors, agents and selling clubs might not. if NC was to forget every offer just because it got leaked we would find it difficult to sign anyone. look at all the times transfers get leaked for other prem teams. I am happy to let NC and MP get on and do the deals they think is right and wont pass judgement on players based on internet rumour and gossip in the press.

Some of this reluctance to join our super club may well be problems with salaries, but the earlier point about Saints not being perceived as a "bigger" club may have been affected by the very disappointing 4 points out of the last 18, which prevented a hoped- for top 10 finish.

This coming on top of the 3 successive excellent victories which gave us all a hope of top 10, has not helped putting Saints on the map, as it were - don't you think?

no most players wont worry unless you get in the c league you get nothing for finishing 10th makes no difference to westham and andy carrol but 100.000 a week does .depends how greedy the players are like the ones pompey had ,Best to have a player who wants to wear the shirt not for a huge wage packet .qpr had a few of those spent the whole season in the bottom 3

Well, if anybody saw Gaston Ramirez in his international for Uruguay v Spain in Confederation Cup, the sooner we can get rid of him the better. Uruguay were outclassed as a team but Gaston was wandering around like a f*** in a trance. He was taken off at half time and was left on bench for Uruguay’s next game.

Brilliant absolutely brilliant

I note he hasn't come back, although he will, saying how he bested you, you need to apologise etc etc his delirium knows no limit

Anyway back to subject, been talking to two Jocks today at a conference. One is a ST Holder at Motherwell the other a Kilmarnock fan who gets to see them around 6 times a year. So, I asked them about the state of Scottish football and Victor

Their overall view is that Scottish football is “kaput” and Celtic need to go elsewhere for the good of the other teams, some of whom who could then go part time, ensuring that the money is then invested in youth schemes not wages etc and bring the game back up to where they had a decent National Side and produced floods of youngsters as they did in the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s.

As one said “I live in the Midlands and I see better football at League 1 & 2 level than I do in the Scot Prem and I include all the teams in that”

So I mentioned that we have a Scot WUM on a board stating that Celtic are great and would rip the Premiership up.

They both laughed themselves stupid with comments such as “you are joking?” “they would struggle to finish above 19th”

As for Victor the view was “Raw” “potential” “massive” “needs to learn/develop” etc but they did give him a fair overview, although as the Killie fan said “isn’t it your defence and strikers you need to add to?”

So as old Sweaty won’t debate football I thought I would chuck a few comments in from people who were prepared to do so with honesty and enlightenment

Made me think that not all Jocks are mars bar eating, tennants super swilling, string vest, towel head band wearing, buffons like old “Ach I The Noo”

I await the response after “a friend” has told him about the post and saying how he has bested me and I need apologise, don’t sweat on that happening jocko

No great loss - you can't miss what you never had; maybe will force MP to gamble on some young up-and-coming stars for one tenth the money; and/or some 21 year old loanees from Barca, or Real Madrid needing match time. I think it's important that the core of our team (RL, AL, Spider, Cork, Clyne, Punch, JayRod, LS) remain "top dogs" and don't get sidelined by so-called big signings. At least for the next season; I think they can all improve a notch or two. Continuity keeps the team identified with Saints and not some mercenary bunch of strangers put together just because their wages are high.

But if he goes to Cardiff and is amazing everyone will be moaning how we've missed out on 'another Michu'. I don't think we should be so quick to pour scorn on him based on a tangled web of half truths and rumour.

Either he'll sign or he won't. Time will tell. It's pointless getting het up about it until we know one way or another.

Scottish friend of mine is a Rangers fan and he thinks Wanyamma is very good.
Compared to most of his opponents.
The problem he sees is that the level required consistently in the Premier league would test his fitness.
There was also a question at Celtic about his ego!
If he came to Saints he would be coming to a team where he would have to produce on a much better level regularly.
If he goes to Cardiff he will probably get to play golf with Bellamy!Mind your face!

Every Premiership team is just like the Harlem Globetrotters now. THis bloke will arrive for millions and next thing we'll see him holding his shirt, kissing the badge and all the rest of that fake bollix, then when a bigger club comes along he'll be whining on twitter that the club don't respect him etc etc and vroom! off he goes. What's the point? Does anybody actually think there's any glory in supporting a team any more? You're just worshipping the owner's wallet. You may as well worship bankers.

I suspect it his Agent that is behind this, he wanted VW to go to Turkey to play, for tax reasons. NC doesn't tolerate greedy agents, apparently we have missed out on players before (sorry it is hearsay, no proof available, so treat it as such), but I am not sure that isn't a bad thing.

It depends if the fees 'belong' to the agent, if so "Agent's fees" or (more than one agent) "Agents' fees" but, as you say, you can say "Agent fees".

Anyway, who knows what's behind this? Clearly, an agent is there to broker the best deal for a client. Alas, too many agents see this in only monitory terms. Footballers, who are generally not known for their ability to think, understand contracts or count in millions, (which is why it's so much easier to buy, say, 5 Ferraris - because 5 is a far easier number than, say €1,493,576.28), leave all that complicated money, bartering and contractual stuff to the bloke creaming off his cut. Maybe, instead of giving agents a percentage of their signing on fee or whatever they do, players should start paying on the basis of 'how happy they are'. Contentment is a severely under-estimated quality these days.

Apparently VWs representative is Ivan Modia and he says it is completely untrue that we are holding talks with Southampton, and that Cardiff have had a £10m bid turned down by Celtic, who have denied them permission to talk to the player. This is from the Daily Mail web site, so usual caution rules apply.

If I was in Spain right now, especially Malaga, i'd be enjoying the scenery, the heat and a cool beer, not making crass comments on another team's website.

Fishy no mates I'm guessing, try the Fourth bar down the strip, you might find someone you know in there

Long may it continue. The transfer market needs a little more balance....and NC (like him or hate him), will not be dictated to by an agent.
I won't spoil your return from France by correcting your use of the apostrophe, Bill, but how did it go with all those cars? Loads of speed, bumper to bumper dare-devil stuff I guess, no shortage of danger as drivers kept on going despite not sleeping for 24 hours and some fantastic, swashbuckling overtaking on hairpin bends, no?

Oh, and away from those crazy French roads, how was the racing?
Excellent thank you Stras...although I hade to return early as my mother took a spell in hospital.
I did have time to take in the practice sessions, take in Le Mans city...take a lot of drink...and use the pompey toilet on a fairly constant basis before my impromptu return to god's country.

Surely, Ospers, on behalf of pedants everywhere, you mean "Agent's fees".

My service is free and impartial etc. etc. ... :)
I think in this case it is Agent fees! Just one, I am hedging my bets, but do appreciate the input from a fellow Spelling and Grammar policeperson.

* monetary*

You're welcome.

right back in the bar says...

I hope the club sees sense and sends this guy packing we don't even need him when we already have Spider and JC and great cover in those positions with Davis and JWP (who we can call back from loan). We don't want to sign for the sake of signing there are some key positions where we need improvement but these do not include holding midfield.
Have learnt nothing from the Ramirez and JRod signings? Those who maintain Ramirez will come good should keep in mind that he failed to stake a claim for first team selection for Uruguay. I am not usually hard on our own players but I find him his attitude suspect.

Two words sum up the failure to sign VW = "Agents fees".
If we sign "VW" I'll "Skoda" SMS to say "Audi" to him.

(I'll get my coat).
Just you wait till we sign him up alongside Darren Bentley, TVR Sinclair and, um, Austin Martin Peters. Then we'll be (check this!) REALLY MOTORING.
ACCORDing to some, that team mate of Yos looks good. If we sign him, we could unvail him at a press conference at the CIVIC centre. Then, he could be part of what would be a PRELUDE to our rise to greatness and, in doing so, he could become something of a LEGEND.

What's his name?

Oh yes, Keisuke HONDA.
YARISking ridicule here.
Ha! As for Rob Moore, how did you find out he was VW's agent? Anyway, he's on the list, along with Mike Lients-Worthmore, Ivor Greedistreak and Willy Sign.
Also there are others Phil McPockets, and Fuller Loot are on the short list.
Rob Moores clients are : ExtraTime provide agency and financial services for the following players:

Please let me be a "victim" next. I'll take the profit of £9m - £11m any day of the week.

Frankly I be quite happy if he signed for you because it would ram a lot of Saints words down a lot of Saints throats.

But for that profit, I wouldn't care if even Eastleigh signed him...........

As for the first part, I have to match like for like sometimes, especially in your case. You would now be happy for him to sign for us? Grade A hypocrisy in my view, we want him still, but not the baggage that goes with it thanks very much, and it's your lot that will be £12m short unless some other mug comes along and buys into it.

Just another unsolicited insult, sorry if that is the way you want it I will have to do what everyone else wants me to do and ignor you. If you cannot understand why we thought it was a good thing initially, but then when the truth was revealed and we went off the idea, it is called changing your mind when you know the facts, is that a concept that is alien to you or are you less intelligent than I gave you credit for?
