Saints defender Vegard Forren has ended disastrous spell by rejoining Molde

Daily Echo: Vegard Forren Vegard Forren

Vegard Forren has ended a disastrous spell at Saints by returning to his former club, Molde.

The centre-back has re-signed for the Norwegian team, just six months after making a £3.5m move to St Mary’s.

Forren, 25, did not play a single minute of first-team football in his time with Saints.

Just a few weeks ago, the Norway international had insisted that he would not be leaving the club to rejoin his old side.

“I am very fond of Molde and hope they do well,” he said. “But right now it’s not an option for me.”

His agent, Jim Solbakken, had also said earlier this summer that Forren “absolutely” intended to stay with Saints and was “definitely” in the club’s plans.

However, behind the scenes it has been said that the defender has not lived up to expectations, and both sides have now cut ties with each other.

I don't understand how players like this get signed, surely Adkins must have known he was not good enough before shelling out the cash, hopefully we will recoup most of what we paid out for him, though we'll never get his wages back.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, Liverpool were interested in giving him a trial at the time we signed him, looked good in a poor league but there have been plenty of other players in the premiership that have been hugely successful after arriving from Norway in the past so I think it was a calculated gamble.

Are you an idiot? Nigel got us into the prem through back to back promotions, taking over after a dreadful start by Alan. I don't often comment on posts but find this ridiculous. Or are you a smelly from the other end of the m27?

I must admit I almost never comment on posts but I also feel the need to. Adkins will remain a legend in the eyes of all true saints fans. He did a fantastic job and for our current place in the footballing world we will forever be indebted to him. Regardless of whether or not you think he was the man to lead us in the future, he clearly proved he was the man to lead us in the past.

I spose on the plus side he gave the other centre backs cause for concern and they upped their game enough to turn the season into a safe and reasonably successful one! Hope we got our money back. Move on and get another CB in.

That's a difficult one, and one that I trust the chairman to decide. The fact is we will never know. We do have a guy that seems to be taking us in the direction we Saints fans want to go, therefor I'm behind him 100%. We should never forget what Nigel did for us though!

Who's to blame?
Well there's only one man at SMS who hires and fires.
Even though he didn't kick a ball, at least Forren lasted longer than Nicola's other great signing, the PR Director who lasted all of two weeks!!
Now tell us Nicola how much did you cost SFC on these two deals, and the compensation shelled out to Alan and Nigel??
What goes around comes around as Nicola is beginning to learn.

A bit of clarity would not go amiss. We have so many different stories on this. Who signed him? Why? Why did he not play? Would he stay? Why no loan? Why still supposedly looking at signing defenders? How much did Molde pay to take him back? Does he have a money-back guarantee? Statements about playing for a place now he is fit

Confused? I am now!

Adkins said he never met him, Forren said he had not met MoPo. Was this a NC signing?
I believe in the Saints way but very strange.

In Norways news...
Forren: I want to play first team football, I am happy to be back at Molde.

Cost 20,000,000kr.... £2,17M....

BREAKING NEWS here!!!!

Ole Gunnar Solskjær has just said they have not paid that much for him, they don't have that to spend.

Just been shown on TV here. Looks like whoever signed him has lost Saints a lot of money, although I still think he is a world class defender.

In other news, I heard that no one gives a monkeys what you think Tebourba because you just constantly bleat on and on about the same things. And you completely fail to realise just how irrelevant you are.

We've all moved on from the very minor issue that appears to have taken over your tiny little world.

Someone thought Vergard was worth a punt at £3.5M, and it turned out that he wasn't right for the club. Live and learn, move on. Hardly a disaster, it happens all the time.

Shocking really - in a day and age where some of us are cycling to work to save money on petrol, Saints can shell out £4m for a player solely based on the knowledge that Liverpool want to give him a trial! And then, after that flog him back whence he came without even giving him any game time. Could we not at least have even loaned him out somewhere! This was a panic buy of the highest magnitude. I can't believe we have been soooooo naive.

What's the betting he has a stormer for Molde this season and everyone in Europe is trying to sign him next summer - including us probably - for a third more!!

why is this as shambles?
is St Mary's falling down?

do we have no other players to replace him?
Are we in league 2 with no money, a squad of players noone has heard of and a tin shed for a stadium?

This is just a player that didn't work out for Saints at the level we are at that is all.
It has happened at other clubs, it will happen again.

Stop it with the drama queen performances.
It doesn't matter who signed him, it doesn't matter why he didn't work out - that's all in the past. What matters is that the Saints go marching on - and we are with some very exciting signings.

Now tell us Nicola how much did you cost SFC on these two deals, and the compensation shelled out to Alan and Nigel??
What goes around comes around as Nicola is beginning to learn.

Adkins had no say in the transfer of players, as he once said the first i knew was when he turned up for training.
Les Reed is responsible for most signings, (he has to justify his large salary by doing something!!!)

FORREN NEWS CONFERENCE

Forren:

The only club I would've come back to was Molde.

It was disappointing that it didn't work out at Southampton.

It's hard to play for a manager that doesn't have faith in you(!!!)

I can look forward to getting back after my holiday and maybe playing in the Champions league.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær:

Reports of 20,000,000kr are not correct, we (Molde) can not afford that.

We are very happy to have him back.

I was delighted by the way we played last season and have high hopes for next season based on the squad and football style we play, but I am getting increasingly concerned with our transfer policy. it’s still fairly early days but for me Ramirez was a real disappointment vs. the big money paid and the Forren saga seems to be a disaster based on what we are hearing today. I have been very impressed by Wanyama in the highlights I have seen but £12.5 is very big money for a player without the experience of playing in one of the top European leagues and it seems the top 4 teams like Arsenal and Manchester United also feel he is not worth that investment vs. the risk I very much hope I am wrong!

We are in a unique time in football history where there is an incredible amount of money in the game, I very much hope certain people at the club like Les Reed who is certainly involved advising Cortese, Pochettino and Atkins in the past on players and transfers strategy ensures we do not make poor decisions and part with large amounts of cash on players that may not live up to their hyped reputations and large transfer fees and salary’s.

I worry that Les Reed has a huge influence at the club in his Executive director of Football role as Ramirez and Forren never felt like a Atkins signings to me, I have no issue with the club spending big money but I just hope we spend it on the right players and avoid the Forren situation happening again and the jury being our on Ramirez.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær has just said they have not paid that much for him, they don't have that to spend.

Just been shown on TV here. Looks like whoever signed him has lost Saints a lot of money, although I still think he is a world class defender.
we will never know , I think MoPo could of given him at least a sub apperance in our last game against Stoke.

And there was me thinking that maybe he just wasn't good enough or had an attitude problem, or didn't fit in. The kipper scenario does seem to be much nearer to te mark though. Anyway he's gone now. It's up to him to prove if we were wrong or not. Won't be the first bum signing in the EPL and won' be the last either.

just an embarrassing shambles. Nigel did not sign him , MoPo did not sign him... I wonder who is behind the interest in WonderBoy from the pub league ?
why is this as shambles?
is St Mary's falling down?

do we have no other players to replace him?
Are we in league 2 with no money, a squad of players noone has heard of and a tin shed for a stadium?

This is just a player that didn't work out for Saints at the level we are at that is all.
It has happened at other clubs, it will happen again.

Stop it with the drama queen performances.
It doesn't matter who signed him, it doesn't matter why he didn't work out - that's all in the past. What matters is that the Saints go marching on - and we are with some very exciting signings.
why is this a shambles ? are you serious ?
Yes I am. Online dictionary description of the word 'Shambles':

a. A scene or condition of complete disorder or ruin: "The economy was in a shambles" (W. Bruce Lincoln).
b. Great clutter or jumble; a total mess: made dinner and left the kitchen a shambles.
2.
a. A place or scene of bloodshed or carnage.
b. A scene or condition of great devastation.
3. A slaughterhouse.
4. Archaic A meat market or butcher shop.

Please let me know which one of these definitions applies to the story of Vergard Forren coming to Saints, not working out and then returning to Molde.
I would call it a disappointment at best. Calling it a shambles is simply wrong, it exaggerates the story and makes it look much worse than it actually is.
The guy got signed for Saints, it didn't work out. Thats it.
Even Forren is quoted as saying that Poch didn't have confidence in him.
what is a player supposed to do when that happens? there are plenty of players that has happened to - Look at Keegan when he was dropped from the England team - was that a shambles? no - It was the new England manager deciding that he didn't want to use Keegan in the team. this is what has happened here with Forren.

Do not blow it out of proportion.

When we signed him I heard that he had attitude issues, but if we sorted them out we would have a gem...

Looks like we took a punt...it didnt work out and we got some (not that much) of our money back.

Probably end up doing really well somewhere like Newcastle or QPR!

Football players are people, not machines, and dealing with people is not an exact science so there is always risk.....Torres a good example.

I take comfort from the fact that whilst today's event suggest we should never have added Forren to the squad, at least it has been recognised and we have done something about it, probably at the first opportunity.

I can only conclude that the squad is being strengthened and in 37 days when we face WBA we will have the best opening line up we have had in many years.

I agree with you on the taking chances bit, it has to be done in the transfer market. I wonder what the issues really were and why Poch never played him. There had been a lot of posters on here wondering the same. Was he that bad a player in those six months?

just an embarrassing shambles. Nigel did not sign him , MoPo did not sign him... I wonder who is behind the interest in WonderBoy from the pub league ?
why is this as shambles?
is St Mary's falling down?

Do not blow it out of proportion.
wow you love wordsmithing ! its a shambles , simples.... even meercats know it....

Solskjaer said they didnt have the money to pay 2 mp for Forren, but that he would cost about what a norwegian defender of his calibre would.. Living in Norway I guess that would be around 1 mill pounds, maybe a little more.. And the could also be sell-on-fee and different clauses.
I doubt that we paid 3.5/4 mill pounds for him, cash in hand aswell. Some of it was maybe different clauses/installments
.
Fair enough deal I guess, when it didnt work out. Shame for Forren and Saints, especially for me being a norwegian saint.
As mention before, in january, with the state our defense was before x-mas, we needed a central defender in. We took a chance, at least our defense improved.

As we are led to believe he is on the Committee which deals with the Transfers in and out of the Club, I doubt that he is the single entity that decides who and when, MoPo must say what he needs, and NC has the final say on any decision. I think, but like all the rest of you, don't really know, and you can speculate all you want, but I bet you will never know the truth, so save your uneducated, guesses and biased opinions they are just a waste of space.

I think most of us were shouting for some extra cover at the back. We may well have brought him in to be that extra cover if we got injuries or the other central defenders didn't shape up. We brought in Billy Sharp to do a short term job (apparently) and it looks like we'll be shipping him out at a loss. I'm not seeing too many complaints about that. Maybe both did the jobs we wanted from them. We'll never know. Welcome aboard VW.

Posters, don't expect any explanations from Nicola over the Verron shambles.
We are still awaiting explanations for the Pardew, Adkins, Benali, PR Director, Solent Interiors, Daily Echo, Programme Sellers, LeTiss, etc. etc shambles.
Don't hold your breath, Nicola's style of management is like the mushroom farmer kept in the dark and covered with s**t
He considers himself superior to any other being and the very thought of explaining his actions to the people who pay his wages is abhorrent to him.
Don't take my word for it --just look at his record in Public Relations, second only to Adolf Hitler's!
All this Nicola propaganda about Verron being an investment for next season was twaddle, Nicola was just covering his backside.
Using only a small amount of common sense, can't the Nicola worshippers accept that if Forren was as good as Nicola blew him up to be, he would have shown it on the training ground and MoPo would have been forced to pick him.
Of course it is possible that MoPo's judgement is flawed and he's let a great player go for half what Nicola paid for him--- after all MoPo has yet to recognise that Saints, above all else, need a quality keeper
You can fool all people some of the time and some people all of the time but you can't fool all people all of the time, except of course the Nicola worshippers, it doesn't take much to fool them--- I hope they live happily with Nicola in the smelly dark, they deserve each other!!

On the OS it states he left as there were "no assurances in place over the regular starting berth Forren is seeking"

Did not earn a first team place and not patient enough to fight for one. A good move getting him back to Molde even if it was a mistake buying him and he came highly recommended.

Whether or not he played, the defence got better after his arrival.

It was his agent who said he was bought for next season. Who ever said it was Nicola should check their facts.

Is it really such a shambles? In the last 12 months, we have also signed Gazzaniga, Boruc, Clyne, Yoshida, S. Davies, Ramirez and Rodriguez. Gazzaniga was perhaps a bit too young and inexperienced to step right into the 1st team. Boruc has been very good. Clyne has been excellent, and Yoshida and Davies good, solid and steady. Ramirez has has had his moments but has generally not performed up to expectations. Rodriguez needed time but finished the season with some impressive performances.

Also, apart from Boruc and Davies, they are all under 24. I can see a bright future.

Just one question, who the heck is Verron?
As I asked earlier, can you name another club that hasn't done a deal like the Forren saga?

No you can't because it is one of those things.

You are mighty quick to criticise NC, even comparing him to Adolf Hitler(which is one of the most ridiculous things you have ever said )

You're list of hard done by people grows by the day , I really pity any person that actually knows you in your sad little life .

What a ridiculous comment. Adkins worked wonders for the club and got us back in the big time. I'm not even sure if he signed the player anyway. I thought Cortese wanted him. I think we did have one of the best defence records in the Championship and League 1.

why is this as shambles?
is St Mary's falling down?

do we have no other players to replace him?

Do not blow it out of proportion.
wow you love wordsmithing ! its a shambles , simples.... even meercats know it....
it's more that I hate exaggeration.

even the headline annoyed me - describing it as a disaster. Utter rubbish. It just didn't work out that's all.

A disaster is a life changing event of titanic proportions.

Without knowing the figures we can't judge whether this was a financial disaster or not.

Maybe if we had a player train for a couple of days before he signed we could take a good look at him and see how he gelled with his potential team mates and manager. Given the sums involved this would not be unreasonable.

This is very strange. here we are one month to go before the new season and Maurice evidently already knows who he prefers in central defence and believes he has enough quality cover. Really? The Croatian looks a good signing but who knows and are any of the other 3 good enough? I like Maya but not everyone on here thinks the same (his positioning is suspect for sure); Hoover worries me anytime anyone goes near him with the ball at their feet; and just not sure about Jose much as I like him and want him to succeed. Given this situation if Forren was any kind of quality you would have thought he would have got a chance.

This was Cortese or Les Reed signing. Lundekvam said he was the best Norwegian defender of this generation so maybe he's back to the Jazz Woodbines. I doubt we will have recouped more than a million from a Norwegian club who are probably laughing all the way to the Leeds. History now so onwards and upwards

OK......... are people really that stupid!?
We will have paid next to nothing for this guy!

Generally players are bought through installments, especially a player like this. If it has cost us as much as a Million I will be shocked.

The fact that he has gone back to the club we bought him from says that we have paid next to nothing.. We certainly will not have paid 4 million and then just sent him back...... That does not happen in real life! If we had paid 4 million up front there is no way on the planet he would be going back.

We needed cover in that position (well actually turned out we did not), but we thought we did, for all we know he may have been on our books for wages only initially with a payment due in the summer if we take up the option.

Take your point about installments and add-ons but this one would have had more up front, smaller clubs always insist on that, at least in real life.

Of course none of us know the exact details, but it's safe to say the dealdidn't work out and, given that we got no playing time from him, we didn't get back what we woould have hoped from the investment.

However, one thing that should be added to the equasion is that maybe - just maybe - signing him helped up the games of Jos, Yos and Jose. If so (and I think it did) then there's an arguement that the signing turned out to be something of a minor success.

At least those calling for more home-grown players will be happy; he's one 'Forren-er' we'll not see next season.

I think maybe it's a part of the throw away generation in that some discard and discount without a second thought, hence also some distasteful comments about Chappers leaving. I was content to see Nigel go but will always be grateful and respectful for what he did.

What's the worry?...he wasn't for us and he's off the books.

We move on.
Good - Bad.
Worrying because we haven't got money to waste. Why did it happen and what is being done to prevent it happening again?

The manager and manager only should be buying players, this is what happens when he doesn't. We were relegated as we changed managers too much, the new incumbent would come in and not fancy certain players and quite rightly want His players in. Have scouts yes but only 1 person can choose.. And that is the manager, it's why he's there!

Excellent. We should be able to seek an annulment based on an unconsummated transfer. Very Medieval. Worked on the Pope when Henry the VIII married Anne of Cleaves on a hot portrait miniature but turned out to be a bit of a donkey.

Problem is when we sell our own Anne of Cleaves. Could swing in roundabouts!

Feel sorry for the guy to be honest. Six months of his career gone to waste. They could have given him a run out, even if just ten minutes at the end with the result wrapped up (e.g. Man City). Hope he gets treated better in future.

Incredible how people are still banging on about Adkins. I think you need a reality check. The guy took Pardew's team, added Hooiveld and got us up. Don't be under any illusions he built the team. But with one of, if not the highest budget in League 1 and The Championship, what he achieved at Saints is the very least he should have done (and in reality we should have won both leagues.) He proved himself tactically inept on so many occasions and wasn't able to identify weaknesses in the team (i.e. our defensive frailties). Ultimately, this is why Cortese got rid of him! Now let's move on, we've had a new guy in charge for seven months and his job is not made any easier by the 'let's be forever thankful brigade'. Cortese is the best thing to happen to this club in a long while. Only thing I have disagreed with him on to date is the new home kit. Anyway, I can't wait for the season to start. COYS!
