Hampshire not taking any chances with Ervine
6:00am Tuesday 13th August 2013 in Sport
HAMPSHIRE can close in on a YB40 semi-final berth by beating Scotland this afternoon – but they will be without Sean Ervine.
The Royals can go to the top of Group B today but will make at least one change to the team that beat Essex on Sunday (1.45pm start).
Ervine has a slight side strain, so is rested to ensure he is fully fit for Finals Day. In his absence, Hamza Riazuddin, Michael Roberts and David Griffiths are all included in a 13-man Hampshire squad.
If the defending champions lose today it will go down as one of the biggest upsets in the history of county cricket.
Scotland have lost their last 16 YB40 matches, a run stretching back to their victory against Notts in Edinburgh at the beginning of last season’s tournament, and have never beaten Hampshire, who will be playing their first game at Citylets Titwood, Glasgow.
The Scots have only beaten one team in the 16 List A matches they have played on the ground since 1980, India A losing by one wicket when the home side chased down 277 three years ago.
But knowing a win will put them top their group if Durham lose at Essex, should prevent any complacency from Hampshire this afternoon.
The Royals play one other YB40 match before Finals Day, at home to Surrey, their FL t20 semi-final opponents, at The Ageas Bowl on Thursday night, before finishing their group campaign away to Lancashire and Derbyshire.
The three group winners qualify for the semi-finals alongside the best runners-up.
