Lions return for must-win game
JAMES Vince returns to Hampshire’s side for today’s must-win YB40 game at Derbyshire on the back of his first England Lions fifty.
Vince struck 63, passing fifty for the first time in 16 innings for the Lions, albeit in a losing cause as they were beaten by four wickets at Taunton by Bangladesh A, who lost the three-match 50-over series 2-1.
Michael Carberry , who was out for 16, and Danny Briggs (10-1-46-1), once again the Lions’ most economical bowler, also return to Hampshire’s ranks today, knowing a win would ensure a home semi-final.
Derbyshire cannot qualify and fielded a weakened team in their penultimate match, losing to Essex by 107 runs at Colchester yesterday.
Third-placed Essex can still catch Hampshire but will have to beat second-placed Lancashire at Old Trafford today to do so.
The Royals have the best group record in the country going into the last round of group games so only an unlikely sequence of results would see them fail to qualify, with the three group winners and best runners-up all going through.
Hampshire would only fail to reach the last four if they lose at Derby and there are wins for two of the following three counties elsewhere: Notts (at Kent), Northants (at Warwickshire) and Glamorgan (at Yorkshire).
