Tale of two Rickies for Saints
It’s a tale of two Rickies as two of the Premier League’s most talked about strikers come head-to-head this weekend.
Rickie Lambert, the prolific Saints striker who is now a fully fledged international goalscorer, and Norwich hitman Ricky van Wolfswinkel, the Netherlands star, will face off at Carrow Road on Saturday.
Their stories are very different.
Lambert is the man who so nearly didn’t make it as a professional footballer, worked in a factory and fought his way to the top, becoming a Saints legend in the process and making it impossible for him to be ignored for international recognition at the age of 31.
Van Wolfswinkel came through the youth system of Vitesse and had spells with Utrecht and Sporting Lisbon in Portugal before Norwich spent €10m euros to bring the 24-year-old to the Premier League. Both men have already opened their accounts for this season.
Lambert bagged a late winner from the penalty spot on the opening day to secure a 1-0 victory over West Brom at St Mary’s.
Van Wolfswinkel scored on the same day, netting an equaliser to earn Norwich a point against Everton.
Saints will be hoping their unbeaten start to the season continues but know Norwich have improved their attacking threat during the summer too.
As well as Van Wolfswinkel, Chris Hughton has also signed Johan Elmander, who scored twice on his full debut against Bury in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.
Saints though can boast plenty of firepower of their own with Emmanuel Mayuka now off and running, Jay Rodriguez hitting the net against Barnsley and Gaston Ramirez staking a claim for a first team spot.
