Le Tiss: Bale salary is obscene
12:00pm Tuesday 3rd September 2013 in Sport
Bale was unveiled by the Spanish giants yesterday, after completing his world-record £86m move from Tottenham Hotspur.
Le Tissier believes the former Saints ace was right to swap White Hart Lane for the Bernabeu, but he believes Real should not be paying the 24-year-old so much money.
"Bale has become the world’s most expensive player at Real Madrid and good luck to him because he is a fabulous player," said Le Tissier on his Goalden Goals blog.
"But the £300,000 per week wages it’s reported the Spanish team will be paying him seems an obscene amount of money to me.
"No-one is worth that sort of money, not even Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, who can virtually guarantee you a goal a game.
"I’ve always said that a footballer is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay for him. But in the real world is Gareth Bale really worth three hundred grand a week? And now he’s getting that sort of money every superstar player will want the same."
Le Tissier added: "I never came into professional football to make myself incredibly rich.
"I went into it because I loved the game and I loved entertaining people. I earned very good money-my top weekly wage at Southampton back then was just under four grand a week.
"In those days that was a heck of a lot of money to the average man in the street and I was pleased with what I was getting.
"I had a very good life outside of football because of it, but it wasn’t an amount of money that separated me from the people that came to watch me play.
"I kept my feet on the ground but, sadly, some of these guys on these mind-numbing wages think they are invincible."
