Winchester double in Overton 5
8:10pm Sunday 8th September 2013 in Sport
THERE was a Winchester double in the opening round of the 2013/14 Hampshire Road Race League, the Overton 5.
With a combined 5 mile race and 2.5 mile fun run, there was a total entry approaching 600 runner, writes MALCOLM PRICE.
Louise Damen not only won the women’s race but set a new women’s course record of 26 minutes 59 seconds.
She beat the previous best of Caroline Herbert (Arena AC), established 17 years ago, by 15 seconds.
Damen’s male club colleague, Chris Powner, triumphed in the men’s race with some ease in 25 minutes 16 seconds.
Both runners have had a quiet year so far, Damen taking a lower profile after just failing to make the Team GB marathon team at London 2012 and Powner through injury.
Behind Powner came Lewis Chalk from Stubbington Green (26 mins 15 secs) after a long tussle with first veteran 40 Alan Murchison.
Stuart Holloway was fourth, helping Salisbury to first position in the team title race that they won last campaign.
Top veteran 50 man came from the host club Overton as Mike Bliss (actually over 55 years old) romped home in 26th place.
Winchester men just snatched second team spot from Stubbington in a tight scoring day with the first four men across the line to score.
In the women’s race, Lucy Elliott, again from Winchester, was second in 29 mins 10 secs from Katie West of Salisbury.
Another veteran Winchester lady, Michaela Macallum, was fifth, making the women’s team gold secure for her club.
The League now stretches out over 10 months and various distances, but resumes at the Victory 5 next Sunday, September 15, with an 11 am start at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth.
