Hampshire goalball star suffers European Championship heartbreak
6:00am Wednesday 11th September 2013 in Sport
ADAM Knott endured a bitter-sweet time as Great Britain’s goalball team suffered an agonising European Championship promotion failure.
Knott ended with 32 goals as GB won all eight of their qualifying group matches – the country’s best winning streak for more than a decade.
But the hosts were then beaten 7-5 by Portugal in their semi-final game before losing 7-2 to Italy in the bronze medal play off.
The double defeat was a cruel blow at the end of a glorious run through the group stages.
GB had beaten fourth placed Portugal 6-2 in the group stages – Knott scoring all six goals – and had also beaten Italy 6-5.
That wasn’t Knott’s best game, though – he had started the tournament by scoring nine times in a 14-4 victory over Azerbaijan.
But the eight wins accounted for little as the play-offs got under way and promotion evaporated.
Russia were crowned champions after beating Portugal.
