1:28pm Monday 16th September 2013 in Sport
The first winners of the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week photography competition have been revealed.
Yasmin Haire, Peter Rivron and James Tomlinson have taken the awards for the on-water racing action, shore-side experience and under-18s categories respectively.
The competition was created as an incentive for budding photographers among the crowds at this year’s Cowes Week.
They were challenged to capture the “spirit of the regatta”, with double Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson judging the entries along with representatives from Aberdeen Asset Management, Getty Images and Cowes Week Limited.
The ‘on-water’ category winner, Yasmin Haire, said: “I really enjoyed the week and it was a fantastic opportunity to be a part of the competition.”
Yasmin, along with the ‘shore-side’ winner, Peter Rivron, will be given the opportunity to shadow a professional photographer at next year’s regatta.
Peter, from Newport, on the Isle of Wight, added: “I am very proud to have won. I am really looking forward to spending time with a shore-side professional photographer next year.”
James Tomlinson, from Cowes, won the under-18s competition, with his photo of the start of the SB20 class.
He said: “It’s really cool to have won this competition and great that my picture has been chosen. It’s also great that so many young people entered the competition.” Aberdeen Asset Management will once again be holding the photography competition at Cowes Week 2014.
Jill Maxwell, sponsorship and events manager at Aberdeen Asset Management, said: “We are thrilled that the photography competition was such a success this year.
“This inclusive competition has helped to promote creativity both on and off the water, enhancing the experience of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week amongst competitors and spectators alike.
“We hope that next year’s competition will grow and be as successful as this year.”
