Poch's changing Saints' culture
8:00am Friday 20th September 2013 in Sport
Mauricio Pochettino is aiming to build a “winning culture” at Saints – but insists it will take time.
Pochettino, below, pointed to tomorrow’s opponents Liverpool as an example of a club whose entire culture has been about winning as something for Saints to strive for, but knows that it takes time to get there.
“The ambition is definitely there but we need to create that winning culture and it doesn’t just happen in 24 hours, it takes a long time to actually establish.
“I think overall the whole of Southampton Football Club is creating that winning culture.
“You can see it starting with the academy, with the chairman, with the structure being built in this club, the staff, the people who work at the training ground, and to actually create that culture takes a long time but we are on the right path and are creating that winning culture that we all want for Southampton Football Club.
“If you look at Liverpool they have a winning culture that’s been established for decades. I think Southampton has been doing that for four or five years so we are starting to have that winning culture that we want for this football club.
“That’s the future – always be better, always win, to always get the three points. To have that ambition is what we want for this football club.
“That winning culture is starting at this football club but it’s something we’re looking to firmly establish for the future of this club.”
Saints hope to start that with victory at Anfield, backing up their victory over the Reds at St Mary’s last season.
They are boosted by the news that Luke Shaw will be fit for the game after the teenage full back limped off in the goalless draw with West Ham “He’s recovered fine from the knock he received against West Ham,” reported Pochettino.
He added: “So far we could be doing better.
“Having said that we know that it’s a very tough competition, we recognise we are still building the team, we have new players who still need to gel together, they need to adapt to the way we need to play and I’m pleased with the way we are playing.”
