Billy Sharp hoping to seal loan move from Southampton to Reading
4:59pm Friday 20th September 2013 in Sport
Reading are hoping to complete a loan deal for Saints striker Billy Sharp in time for him to feature for the club this weekend.
The 27-year-old has fallen out of favour at St Mary’s, but now appears set to link up with his former boss, Nigel Adkins, at the Madejski Stadium.
The Saints manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has previously said that the club has been trying to help Sharp find an exit, with the player not being in his first-team plans.
Sharp was unable to secure a move before the transfer window shut, however he could now join the Royals.
The deal is not yet complete, but the Championship club are understood to be keen to secure Sharp in time for him to play at Derby tomorrow.
It was Adkins who signed Sharp for Saints as the club paid out £1.8m to bring him in from Doncaster in January 2012.
Sharp repaid that faith by scoring nine goals in 15 games to help Saints to promotion from the Championship.
However, elevation to the Premier League has meant chances have been far harder to come by.
Sharp has featured just twice for Saints in the top flight and spent much of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest.
