Pochettino: Why Anfield win was so pleasing
Mauricio Pochettino insisted Saints’ victory at Liverpool was thanks to the philosophy of how they want to play.
Saints’ 1-0 victory at Anfield, courtesy of Dejan Lovren’s second half header, was everything that Pochettino wants to see from his team in the future.
“I think overall we had a very good game and we were faithful to our philosophy and how we wanted to develop our game, especially in the second half,” he said.
“I think over the 90 minutes we were superior to them and we are very pleased that we were able to capitalise on the chances we created and get the win.”
Pochettino spoke before the match of wanting to develop a winning mentality at the club and this victory proved he is on track to do just that.
“What we have to do is learn from these types of games and the experience,” said the Saints boss.
“We just have to think again of the Capital One Cup game coming up on Tuesday and then Crystal Palace at home next Saturday.
“It’s not going to be worth anything if we start thinking ahead of ourselves.
“We have to believe we can do this in very tough stadiums and very tough pitches in the rest of the country.
“We have to keep on developing that winning mentality and that comes down to the manager and I need to be able to do that.”
He added: “It’s not only me developing that winning mentality but the chairman who has been developing it for the last four years and solidifying a structure of how the club wants to play.
“We fully believe in how we want to play and what the future is for Southampton Football Club and a victory like this reinforces that even more.”
Pochettino revealed he made a half-time tactical switch that paid off for Saints as they grabbed the three points.
“I think especially in the second half we came out correcting what we hadn’t done properly in the first half,” he reflected.
“We were hanging way too far back in the first half defensively but when we came in we corrected those positions and pressed a bit higher and were able to go on the counter attack and in the second half we did very well and that was the key.”
